Alright guys; as mentioned in email; you now have the ability to call out other fighters that are of an even skill set. So, let it be known here; Who are you calling out? Also, feel free to talk trash about up coming fights and the fighters you face. Keep it "somewhat" clean and no personal attacks; keep it in game style.

Kumite 39 Preview

Ladies and gentlemen, The Underground Arena opens its doors once again on September 17 as it welcomes Kumite 39 fight card, brought to you by PhoQus Sports Inc. And you wouldn’t want to miss the start of that, as we get underway with a heavyweight debut between two guys willing to prove themselves:

265 lbs Doug „Gforce” Thomas (0-0-0) v Trey „Trashy” Robinson (0-0-0)

Every indication leads to think that these guys will throw heavy leather right from the bell. Both of them have very similar skill sets as both are devastating strikers with little experience on the ground. Actually, they both come out of the same training camp, although they promise that it won’t stop them from trying to knock each other out in spectacular fashion. Doug Thomas has a muay thai background, while Trey Robinson is a boxer and will most likely use his hands to put a hurting on his opponent. This match is a toss up as there is very little known about both fighters, although I can’t see it ending any other way than a highlight reel knockout.

170 lbs Zach „The Chaos Warrior” Aderis (4-8-0) v Timu Puruunen (3-4-1)

Again, on paper it looks like a match-up between muay thai striker vs. boxer, but it could just as well turn out into an allround muay thai battle. Aderis is the more experienced fighter out of the two and possesses heavy leg kicks and sharp elbows, but Puurunen likes to use thai clinch to a great effect, so it will be interesting to see who gets the upper hand if the fight eventually ends up in the clinch. It appears that Puruunen is the more well rounded fighter out of the two and most likely will have an advantage once the fight hits the mat. Taking into account that there seems to be some problems in Aderis camp in preparation for this fight as rumours spread that he isn’t training at 100%, I have to give advantage to Puurunen in this match-up.

170 lbs Craig „Boom” Brophy (9-6-0) v Tron „The Flyboy” McFly (12-11-1)

In a fight between two veterans of the sport who will look to end their losing streaks, Brophy brings a superior Jiu Jitsu game to the table and will look to take down and smother his opponent looking for a submission. He is no slouch on the feet either and will have a reach advantage over his opponent, but it looks like he will feel more comfortable once the fight hits the ground against an experienced and dangerous muay thai practicioner in McFly.

The Flyboy is going through a rough patch at the moment since coming up short in a title fight against Jamey Mills, where Jiu Jitsu was his kryptonite. But if he can keep the fight on the feet long enough or engage in a clinch, he might pose serious problems for Brophy. It’s a close fight, but I’m picking a submission victory for Brophy, if he manages to get the fight to the mat.

205 lbs Juan Pablo Castagnino (4-3-0) v Wrestling „Mr Takedown” Partner (1-3-0)

There is no doubt that wrestling has become one of the most important attributes in becoming a successful MMA fighter, but no matter how superior, wrestling alone won’t be enough for Wrestling Partner to become victorious in this matchup. Veteran of the No Retreat No Surrender tournament Castagnino has vicious punching power, as all his victories have come via knockout. And although Partner is likely to take him down at will, Castagnino will have a chance to showcase his submission skills. Prediction – tapout victory for Castagnino.

265 lbs Rich Black Bear (6-7-0) v Erik Cumblood (5-4-0)

In a rematch between two grappling aces, at first glance it looks like once the fight hits the mat, ADCC champion and well respected Jiu Jitsu black belt Black Bear should have the grappling advantage. But as the first match showed, wonderfully named Cumblood used his superior wrestling to decide where the fight takes place, and once he gets on top, his most important weapon is vicious ground and pound, as he likes not only to submit his opponents, but also beat them into a bloody pulp. Black Bear is confident that this time he will get his opponent to tap, as in the first fight he got confused and didn’t try even one submission attempt. But I have to stick with a feeling in my gut that the result will be the same as in the first match – TKO victory for Cumblood.

265 lbs Menno „Piro” Lorenz (5-2-0) v George „Da Ape” Hattingh (4-4-0)

Menno Lorenz may have the cleaner, more crisp technique in this fight, but he shouldn’t underestimate George Hattingh’s knockout power. All of Da Apes victories have come in the first round by - you gessed it – brutal knockouts. That said, Menno Lorenz won’t mind to stand and trade with his opponent. Piro is much bigger and stronger of the two fighters and has four quick finishes on his resume as well, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him getting the victory in this match by leaving his opponent lying unconscious on the floor. It will be a fun fight, but the pressure to perform lies on Menno Lorenz as he desperately needs the win to cover his training expenses, and I’m predicting he will deliver the goods.

185 lbs Alfons „Roid Rage” Aberg (4-2-0) v Bums „The Brownie” Bi (7-3-0)

Alfons Aberg is on a tear right now, having won his last three fights and coming off an impressive performance against muay thai competitor Salvidor Sariento. Thus said, Bums Bi poses a different type of challenge as he is known for his outstanding submission skills. The Brownie has 6 tapout victories on his resume, and will no doubt try to get this fight to the ground as quickly as possible against heavy handed Aberg.

Wrestling will be the key in this fight – if Roid Rage can stop the takedown attempts of his opponent, I see him getting the nod in this bout, however on the ground he might find himself at a disadvantage. The Brownie seems to be the favourite, although don’t be surprised if Aberg impresses us with another excellent performance.

170 lbs Arturo „El Borracho Valiente” Cano (14-6-1) v Rowland „The Bishop” Edwards (3-0-0)

In the evenings first 5 round bout, experienced veteran Arturo Cano takes on a fast rising welterweight contender Rowland Edwards. Despite not having an impressive wrestling background, Edwards has developed an excellent sprawl to keep the fight standing and uses hard kicks to beat beat down his opponents to the point where they can barely stand up. He will try to do the same with Arturo Cano, chopping him down with leg kicks to take away his movement and punishing him with thunderous liver kicks and head kicks.

Cano, on the other hand, is well known for his grappling ability. He will try to land his trademark double leg takedowns on The Bishop, and once the fight gets into his world, El Borracho Valiente is a finisher and will try to use his superior experience and skillset to break his opponents limbs or put him to sleep. It’s an intriguing match up which will show where Edwards stands in the division, and a victory over seasoned veteran in Cano would be a huge feather in his cap and it could catapult him into possible contenders list for the title, if The Bishop can pull it off.

205 lbs Rodney Holmes (7-2-0) v Stephen „Baby Face” McMurtry (6-3-0)

It didn’t take long for Rodney Holmes to get noticed in the fight game. After impressing in his debut, straight away Holmes was given a title shot, and he didn’t dissapoint. In only his second fight he won Sabotage Combat League title, successfully defending it three times. After opening his record with impressive six straight victories, five of them via stoppage, Rodney quickly became one of the most feared strikers in the division.

Then he decided to challenge himself and moved from Amsterdam to Helsinki. Things didn’t turn out so well here. He lost a close fight against future champion Charles Cheng, and came up short again against the same opponent when they fought in a rematch for the title.

Now he looks to rebuild his career, and in his way stands hard hitting Stephen McMurtry. One of the advantages of Baby Face is his superior cardio, and if he can get in Holmes face and push the pace of the fight right from the start, Rodney might be in for a long evening. Not counting out McMurtry, but my bold pick for this fight would be Holmes, and his opponent might find himself lying on the canvas, asking – „What happened?”

155 lbs Cassit „Polvissa” Heiluu (6-5-0) v Daniel „The King” Moreira (6-2-0)

In our main event with title shot implications, heavy handed Daniel Moreira will take on grappling ace Cassit Heiluu. Daniel Moreira has been on a tear recently, winning his last four fights. He seems to be a well rounded fighter who knows how to exploit his opponents weaknesses, be it standing or on the ground. But his most lethal weapon is his hands, and after knocking out a Jiu Jitsu brown belt under two minute mark in his last fight, he will take the same sprawl-and-brawl approach into this fight as well.

And The King better have his sprawl ready, as although Cassit Heiluu is no match for him on the feet, once Polvissa decides to use his raw power and drives in with a powerful double leg takedown and the fight hits the ground, Heiluu definately will know how to use it to his advantage. Five of six Cassit Heiluu’s victories have come via submission, and he will use his superior size and strength in this fight to smother and submit Moreira. It’s a tricky fight, but I’ve been really impressed by Moreira lately and will go with a TKO victory for The King.

Good luck and enjoy the fights!
