Eveas Posted November 30, 2011 Report Share Posted November 30, 2011 A Sacramento teen and sister of the nationally renown mixed martial artist Urijah Faber was critically injured in a car accident after finishing Black Friday shopping at the Roseville Galleria. Michaella Tastad, 19, was driving home Friday with a friend at 3 a.m. when she rear ended a vehicle slowing down near the site of a single-car accident, according to California Highway Patrol Officer David Martinez. A few minutes later, three more cars collided. Three people were taken to the hospital, but only Tastad suffered major injuries, Martinez said. Faber said his sister received life-threatening head trauma and is in a medically induced coma at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. He said Tastad also has a collapsed lung, spleen damage and several other injuries. Part of Tastad's skull was removed and she underwent a second surgery to insert a shunt to help drain fluid, Faber said. The passenger in Tastad's car was treated and released from the hospital on Friday, Faber said. On Monday, Faber said his family received their first good news when doctors briefly took his sister off medicine that induces the coma. "She gave a peace sign and wiggled her toes," Faber said. "Then they put her back under ... We are done being scared and now it's about having the recovery we all want." Tastad attends Sierra College and lives next door to Faber in a row of houses he owns in Carmichael. She works for Faber, using her organizational and cooking skills to help the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight fighter manage his hectic schedule. She also works at a clothing store at the Roseville Galleria. Tastad grew up in Lincoln, but attended high school in Santa Barbara. Their mom, Suzanne Tastad, said Monday's progress was the first time she was able to calm down since hearing of the accident. "We want her to be OK," Suzanne Tastad said. "That's all we care about. I doubt that anybody has even heard of the girl so it only affects her friends and family. That said, I hope she gets better as I do for anybody who gets hurt in a car accident.
