PREVIEW PART 1

Imperial vs Legacy

31st October
Suomi International

After heated debates between the two owners of Imperial and Legacy over whose organisation is superior, they have come to an agreement to decide whose roster is better. 10 fights to determine the outcome in 2 events which showcases each org’s elite talent. These are the fights taking place at Imperial.

Ji Lu vs. Culver Crimson – 265lbs

Imperials HW champion, Lu, faces the former Legacy champion Crimson in one of the biggest fights of the events. Everyone loves heavyweight fights especially when it concerns two future stars.

Lu is the reigning Imperial champion with 1 successful title defence and is also the last ever REZDOG champion. Lu is a well rounded fighter, starting his career as a tough as nails brawler who wasn’t afraid to grind it out with a few takedowns or even some submission skills, however he has developed into one of the best strikers out there but he still likes to lay into his opponents with his thunderous ground and pound after knocking them down with his striking. He is also a very durable fighter, being capable of taking big punches without folding under the pressure, a trait which he will need against the power of Crimson.

After being well and truly grapple raped in his last fight, Crimson is coming off of his first career loss with a point to prove. His excellent striking abilities + his power make him a dangerous foe for any heavyweight who takes the risk of trading strikes with him. Like his opponent, he has an excellent chin, we must see if his new beard will make it even better.

A very even fight here, but Lu is the older and more experienced fighter and may be able to exploit Crimson’s grappling deficiency. Expect these two to trade big punches for a round and then Lu to start to take over, scoring a win for Imperial whilst he is at it.

Prediction: Lu via TKO

Chiku "Small Head" Maneno vs. "The Shaken Martini" Arlington Beech – 170lbs

Maneno faces a very tough test here as he faces Legacy WW champion and former Imperial LW champion, Beech.

Maneno has great boxing skills and very good power for a welterweight, however I find that’s the only good words I can say about him. In almost all of his fights he has used the same tactic and a one-dimensional approach which better fighters can exploit. He mixes in punches to the body to disguise his swift and hard punches to the head, but his punches are his only weapon.

Beech should look to take advice from his training partner, Chief Tappenahomma, who gave Maneno his latest loss in a one sided beatdown. He is the Legacy WW champion and fought tough opposition his whole career with only 2 losses to show for it. He is an excellent striker who uses a wide range of punches and kicks to batter his opponent, it also helps he hits hard, very hard as evidenced by his 9 (T)KO victories many of which were fought at 155lbs.

I don’t give Maneno much of a chance in this fight, his one dimensional approach should be easy for Beech to pick apart and make him pay for it. Expect Beech to pick up a knockout win within 2 rounds.

Prediction: Beech via TKO

Aaron "Golden" Newton vs. Matt Kroblur – 205lbs

Former Imperial LHW champion, Newton, will face off against the relatively inexperienced Kroblur.

Newton is a former KT prodigy before he moved to MMA and used his superior striking skills to rack up a 7 fight win streak and the Imperial title. He has worked diligently on his defensive grappling skills and counter wrestling, anything to keep the fight standing where he can employ his vicious arsenal of kicks and punches.

Despite being the elder fighter by one year, Kroblur is still finding his feet in the world of MMA. At 6-1 he is a bonafide prospect. With a chin that can take almost any punch thrown at him and a wrestling base where he is able to dominate fights on the floor. On paper he is a very bad matchup for Newton, Newton has not faced too many grapplers the calibre of Kroblur in his career. Kroblur’s striking is coming along very nicely, but it still mainly serves as a tool to set up his takedowns rather than being a weapon in themselves.

If Newton is able to keep this fight standing he stands a chance, but Kroblur should be able to eat his punches whilst scoring points on the ground. He may get a late finish with his ground and pound or he may look to grind out the win, either way my money is on Kroblur.

Prediction: Kroblur via UD

Bull Hurley vs. Dave "Brown Dog" Brown – 265lbs

Hurley is a former HW champion at Imperial who is looking to pick up a win over a quality opposition here. Brown is another former Imperial man tempted to Legacy, going 2-1-1 in Imperial and is currently 2-0 in Legacy.

Hurley is a very young person, at 21 years old, with his only loss to Ji Lu. He is a very intriguing looking prospect with huge power in his strikes and the ability to take a beating without getting too hurt. His striking is his greatest asset, leaving most of his victims behind completely unconscious with brutal 1 punch KO’s.

Brown has crazy striking skills considering he is only 25 but it is his well rounded finishing ability that makes him truly dangerous. Able to rock his opponent and lock in a submission or continue pounding on them and his ability to fight off of his back is very impressive. His main way of attack is his striking however, so expect him to engage Hurley in a fist(leg)fight.

This has the making of a classic HW fight, with both fighters bring power and great striking to the cage. Brown has the better technical striking, but Hurley has the better chin and possibly the better power. I can see it swinging in either fighters way but I will go with Hurley to cause the upset.

Prediciton: Hurley via KO

Manolito Damhuis vs. Wendel "Captain Crunch" Clark – 185lbs

Damhuis is a 4 fight veteran of Imperial and he will be looking to get another win for them against the challenger from Legacy, Clark.

Damhuis is very well rounded, with a good striking background but with equally proficient grappling capabilities. His only recent setback is against Cid Strife, the reigning 185 champion and tipped by many to go onto greatness. Showing Damhuis is no slouch when things get tough. The key concern for him should be his finishing ability with only 4 of his 9 wins coming via finish, he is as durable as they come but his finishing power needs to improve.

The 1 fight veteran of Legacy, Clark is a long time former NEX champion and is well rounded and also a high level finisher with submissions and lots of KO’s on his record. He is a big MW and has the size advantage over most which will help him considerably against the smaller Damhuis.

Both fighters are extremely durable, and I see this going to a decision. Damhuis will have to speed around Clark and land with quantity rather and use his grappling. Clark will be game though, and neither will have an easy time out there.

Prediciton: Clark via UD

Legacy 20! – Imperial vs Legacy

Montreal, Belle Centre
31st October

The other 5 fights between the two orgs take place in the other org, Legacy. With 1 million on the line, both orgs will want their fighters to bring home the wins.

Patrick "Buckshot" Brody vs. "A Tribute to" Cid Strife – 185lbs

Brody brings the Legacy 205lbs title to this encounter against the always tough and Imperial 185lbs champion, Cid Strife.

Brody is fresh off a superfight loss to Imperial 170lbs champion, Chief Tappenahomma. It was a hard fought fight by Brody, but in the end the lighter fighter prevailed with his relentless striking. Brody’s MMA game is extremely well rounded, whilst in his early career he was purely a grappler with limited striking, in his more recent fights he has shown tremendous improvement in his striking.

Strife’s only career loss is against Chief Tappenahomma, the man who last beat Brody, but other than that one loss Strife has been nigh untouchable. He specialises in brutalising his opponents in the clinch but he is also capable of using his punches from range in combination with his kicking ability. He has shown off a great defensive ground game, but his offensive game revolves around his striking.

A extremely tough matchup to call, two great prospects but Strife will be more at home at his natural weight of 185 whilst Brody will have to cut more weight and doesn’t have the greatest results when he has dropped in weight.

Prediction: Strife via TKO

Vincent "Mad Dog" Oketch vs. Jong Un "Gangnam Style!" Kim – 135lbs

Next up is the small fighters, former long time NEX 155lbs champion Oketch faces off against one of the most dominant 135lbs in MMA and Imperial 135lbs champ, Kim.

Oketch is a well rounded fighter, but specialises in ground fighting. With 6 submissions on his record but has shown in the past he is willing to throw punches and has a respectable amount of power in his hands. He formerly fought his career at 155lbs but has decided to drop not 1, but 2 weight classes to 135lbs. His fight against Kim will be his 2nd fight at his new weight class and he hopes he will grab his first win there.

On a 12 fight winning streak with 10 of those being title fights and only 3 of them being decisions, Kim is a scary fighter to face at 135lbs. Training with the likes of Lil Wayne and Martin St Louis, other fighters who are fantastic at the lower weight classes, Kim is learning a lot. He is extremely versatile with his finishing ability. Great submissions along with concussion inducing punches, he will be looking to move his win streak one step further and along the way pick up a win for Imperial.

Close fight, I don’t think Kim will be able to score a KO on Oketch but he has the better striking and should get the decision win here.

Prediction: Kim via UD

Vaas Haas vs. "Lucky" Liam McGuiness – 205lbs

Haas comes into this fight relatively unexperienced compared to former Imperial 205lbs champion and a veteran of almost 30 fights, Liam McGuiness.

Haas is one a nice 5 fight win streak in Legacy, and 5 fights under new management. He has a very sturdy chin and an excellent arsenal of strikes that he uses to pick apart his opponents. He is also a very accurate striker, landing the majority of the strikes he throws.

Haas’s opponent will be Liam McGuiness who is a former champion at Imperial and at 24 years of age, he is extremely experienced. With 17 victories to his name and the majority of them coming via (T)KO he is one of the most dangerous knockout artists out there. He has a very simple philosophy when it comes to fighting, he throws punches until the other person goes down. His boxing is very advanced, but he has faced trouble when his boxing can’t do it and his opponents have more tools at their disposal.

McGuiness could very well knock out Haas, but the safer bet would be that Haas uses his speed and accuracy to wear down Liam and possibly scoring a late KO victory.

Prediction: Haas via TKO

Sergio Bujol vs. Juntusen Viljo – 170lbs

Two power strikers meet at 170lb as Legacy’s own Sergio Bujol looks to put the hurting on the owner of a 5 fight winning streak, Viljo.

Bujol is another fighter from Imperial that has made a new home at Legacy. He has an excellent array of strikes and likes to utilise kicks to set up his punches. He is blessed with a very strong chin, having faced some tough strikers in his career and walked through their best strikes, he will need to bring his A-Game to beat Viljo.

Viljo under new management is winning, with a 100% finish rate over 4 fights. He has stuck to his boxing under new manager, neglecting to use his other offensive tools that he used earlier in his career. He might need to mix it up a bit more against the versatile Bujol.

It will be a close fight, but I feel Bujol will be able to withstand the punches of Viljo and will either outpoint his with a wider variety of strikes or land a killer blow.

Prediction: Bujol via TKO

Danny "Cyclone" Ciprianni vs. Johny "Unbreakable" Clattenburg – 205lbs

Former Imperial man and Legacy’s representative, Ciprianni, will ring his finishing ability to the table against 5 fight Imperial veteran, Clattenburg.

From a young age Ciprianni showed a diverse skill set, he had the power in his fists and he had the grappling acumen to go far. His 5-3 record may not be showing a true representation of his abilities as he has faced tough competition and been in many close fights with them. He is capable of finishing an opponent anywhere in a fight, be it with his punches and kicks or his submission prowess.

Clattenburg is very confident in his striking and his ability to put people to sleep with his fists. 7 of his 9 wins are via (T)KO. He likes to string together his punches, so at least one of his punches land and he knows that one of his punches could end the night. One of his problems is he gets finished a lot, out of his 5 losses 2 are from (T)KO and 2 are from submission, this could be a problem against a fighter like Ciprianni.

Ciprianni has more weapons at his disposal, but Clattenburg has the great equaliser, power. However, Ciprianni has more ways to finish the fight against a fighter who is vulnerable to being finished.

Prediction: Ciprianni via submission
