HIGHLAND 7 MAIN CARD REVIEW

By Alika Webb

1615129344oh_7N7qt.png_small

Here was me minding my own business, and a mail comes through called "Highland 7 short review". A legend of the Highland brand, Alika Webb, has decided completely of their own accord to write up a review for the main card. Safe to say, I was absolutely delighted. Massive props to Alika Webb and I'm absolutely delighted they decided to do this completely of their own accord. It shows we're all doing something right. If you enjoy this review, make sure to leave a post below saying so. It's play when it's just me writing them, but if another manager does I want them to know it was appreciated.

Light Heavyweight - Buddy Barnett (0-0) Vs Philip Cross (0-1)

Philip "Crosser" Cross suffered a devastating loss in his debut on the independent circuit. Losing in a little over a minute meant that he didn’t get to show off his skills and that’s exactly what he looked to do in his promotional debut.

Buddy Barnett was making his debut and came running out of the gate with bloodlust coming out of his pores, swinging for the fences to start the match. Philip Cross kept his head cool and took Barnett down before the wild man even had a chance to land his first punch. Philip Cross however quickly found out that Buddy Barnett knows how to defend himself on the ground, leaving Cross unable to take advantage of his superior wrestling. The referee brought the fight back up and Cross gave it his all to keep closing the distance. But the tides had turned and Barnett slowly found his footing, throwing bombs with wicked precision. One of those bombs clipped Cross a little over a minute in the third and final round, dropping Cross to the floor. Barnett showed off his killer instinct, dotting his I’s and crossing his t’s, finishing Cross off with a bombardment of strikes.

Winner: Buddy Barnett by TKO (Strikes)

Welterweight - Adam Shalashaska (0-0) Vs Richard Drake (0-0)

These two warriors from France and Switzerland didn’t show any nervous jitters walking down to the cage as they made their debuts. But once the bell rang, one fighter simply dominated.

Richard Drake fired off some warning shots but like a man possessed, Adam Shalashaska just ate them all for breakfast. Adam Shalashaska quickly closed the distance with disregard for his own wellbeing, taking the fight to the ground in less than a minute and that was all she wrote. Impressive debut for France’s new rising star Adam Shalashaska.

Winner: Adam Shalashaska by Submission (Triangle)

Light Heavyweight - Billy Crawley (1-0) Vs Mister Winky (1-0)

Two fighters who were dominant to say the least in their respective debuts wanted to prove to the world that luck had nothing to dwith that first victory. They got the nervous jitters out of the way last time, now it was time for one of them to cement their status as a legitimate contender in the light heavyweight division.

Boxing Vs Muay Thai, 1-0. Mister Winky’s kicks were fast and furious but Billy Crawley’s fists proved the difference maker, carefully breaking Mister Winky’s defenses down with a sniper’s precision until not a single brick was left standing. Another solid performance for Billy Crawley as he moves up the ladder.

Winner: Billy Crawley by TKO (Strikes)

Lightweight - Kranckx Diesel (1-0) Vs Rob Cervantes (1-0)

Another pair of undefeated fighters faced off in the co-main event. It was no secret Kranckx Diesel wanted this fight to stay standing, proving himself a master clinch rapist in his debut. Rob Cervantes dominated with his trademark ground skills last time and the urge to take this fight to the ground was written on his forehead as he made his way to the cage.

Cervantes failed to get the fight down in his first attempt but that didn’t stop him from trying again and once he managed to take the fight down to the ground, he dominated. There were submissions everywhere as Cervantes looked to choke or yank off any body part Kranckx Diesel had left lying around. Kranckx Diesel however survived the submission clinic and when the second round started, he came back with vengeance. Kranckx Diesel closed the distance himself this time, taking the fight into the clinch. He started blasting punch after punch like a human machine gun until Cervantes just couldn’t take it anymore.

Winner: Kranckx Diesel by TKO (Strikes)

Middleweight - Cathair McKay (2-0) Vs Island Guy (2-0)

This was the fight everyone was waiting for, the big main event. Two dominant knockout machines with dynamite punches and Highland Games had the pleasure to lock these guys in a cage, just to see who could walk out of there alive.

If you didn’t know in advance that these two were bringing fireworks, you sure knew they were after the first round. A little over a minute into the fight and Cathair McKay waffled Island Guy with a big right hand, knocking him down to the canvas. Island Guy however didn’t let it faze him, getting his fists back up before he even shook off the cobwebs. Cathair McKay took the fight to the clinch to finish off the round. These two middleweight brawlers clobbered each other and by the end of the first round, Island Guy had a massive pounding headache while Cathair McKay was busted open like he just walked off the set of a horror movie.

Winner: Cathair McKay by Decision (Unanimous)

Jamal Winfield: Hey Buddy can I speak with you for a moment?

Buddy Barnett: Yeah sure thing umm uhhh who are you?

Jamal Winfield: I am Jamal Winfield and I'm doing some post fight interviews.

Buddy Barnett: Ah cool. Cool.

Jamal Winfield: Was there ever a moment in the fight you were worried?

Buddy Barnett: No I had a game plan and stuck to it. I could have submitted him probably but the stand up was a sure thing in this fight.

Jamal Winfield: What do you mean weren't you losing the first round and if you could have probably submitted him then why didn't you in the first when you were taken down over and over spending that round on your back?

Buddy Barnett: Like I said I had a game plan and I stuck to it. That was proof it was working. He was a ground fighter so staying there gives him his best chance. So if standing up is a sure bet for me to win this fight then why not hold him close on the ground causing the fight to get stood back up? And you saw that is exactly what happened repeatedly. I knew after time I could find my range and then smooth sailing putting him on the defensive where he can't dive in for takedowns.

Jamal Winfield: Any idea who your next opponent is?

Buddy Barnett: Yeah Uncle Callum stopped me on the way out of the Cage with paper in hand. It will be against Franko Getaldic.

Jamal Winfield: Haven't heard of him. Do you know anything?

Buddy Barnett: I know it will be his MMA debut and he is 25. I heard he did some wrestling way back when he was kid in high school. Back when I was playing like tee-ball. And I hear he actually did some professional boxing. Rather that is true or not or if he was any good. I mean if it is true then obviously he wasn't bad to be a professional so that's not what I meant.

Jamal Winfield: Any ideas of a game plan?

Buddy Barnett: All my coaches think I am guaranteed to have my purple belt in bjj by then. So if he wants to get close then the game plan is to him on the ground. If he wants to box then we will put my tae-kwon-do I grew up with and my amateur boxing to the test.

Jamal Winfield: Where do you see yourself in this division?

Buddy Barnett: Ask me that after my next fight. Right now that's what I'm focused on.

Jamal Winfield: Well said, will do, and thank you for your time.

HIGHLAND REVIEW - WEEK 2

1614366036ug6.png1615129344oh_7N7qt.png_small1615129334W7rPpdOp.png_small

We have some nice posters now, but we're stuck with these for another 2 reviews.

Introduction

Our last weekly review went down well. Got some good mails about it and a few of you have been posting in the Smack Talk thread which I love to see. This week we've managed to have 3 straight events over a 70 rating. Highland 8 was the first event with a very solid profit, so we've paid off the initial loan and have LOADS of arenas booked and fight offers flying out. Some of those upcoming fights feature inaugural title shots as well, so we have an exciting couple of weeks ahead.

IXF has managed to go ahead of us in the Island rankings, but this was completely expected. Our strategy is to focus on those lower hype fighters and work on building loads of fighters up at the once, so it does take us a little bit of time to hit the ground running. Other orgs will focus on higher ratings at the start, while we're more of a long game kind of outfit.

The current gameplan is to get some champions sorted, start working towards filling out the Underground arena, getting the first set of renegotiations sorted and trying to get everyone as active as possible.

The Events

So alas, that brings us to the events themselves. At Highland 6, it was actually myself who reigned supreme in the main event. I don't know what alternate reality I'm living in where I'm winning main event fights, but I'll take it. Shug Skinner (2-0) managed to go through Rory Gracie (1-1) with his strong clinch game. The timing of this worked perfectly as Highland 8 featured another Welterweight bout between Maurice Tillet (3-0) and Tam Calderwood (3-1), with the former winning in destructive fashion. With the ground work laid, Skinner and Tillet will now compete for the first ever Highland Welterweight Title at Highland 16.

Another title fight build from the past week is Jovan Markelic (3-0) against Cathair McKay (3-0) in the Middleweight division. Jovan went through Dalton Dekker (1-1) at Highland 6, while Cathair went the distance with Island Guy (2-1) at the next event. This fight will main event Highland 14.

Some other performances needing to be pointed out include Needle Dick (3-0) who harnessed the power of 1000 micrometers to take out Captain Chaos (2-1). It's now expected that the man with no girth will fight for the inaugural Heavyweight Championship. Sean Martin (2-0) head kicked his way to bonus money against Mike Cozad (1-1), but Apollo Turner (1-2) might feel slighted as he needed just 5 seconds to knock out Kim Tae Won Lumihi (0-3).

Outro

That manager history section took WAY longer than I expected, so enjoy it!!! Haha. I also feel that it's important to say that my massively impressive managerial history isn't massively impressive at all. I created and trained basically none of those guys. Most of them were just me saving already established HG fighters before promptly running them into the ground! But it's fantastic to get to add that Power Shark resume. One of the greatest we've ever had.

Thanks for reading as always. We have some big weeks coming ahead as we start to crown our new champions so be on the lookout. You'll likely see from above that that we haven't actually had a lot of champions over the years. 105 champions were crowned across 4 organisations and a 2 year span with probably thousands of fighters involved.

More will be added in the very near future.

STAY LOCKED IN!

TONIGHT on #Highland 10. We have a handful of returns as the Holmes boys are back in action, with Hans taking centre stage in the main event. He takes on Marko Kerr. Other fighters we've seen in the Highland cage include Vani Yani and Anwar Rinda. Will we end tonight with some new title contenders? You're damn right we will. #TheIsland

HIGHLAND REVIEW - WEEK 3

1615129322ua8PwexA.png_small1615129305nFgrGjTr.png_small161539408811.png

The two yucky ones are really ruining that nice poster, right?

Introduction

What's happening folks. How is everyone? Doing well? How's the kids? Okay I dunno how to start these intros.

I hope you had a good March 15 to March 21. We did as a trio of big events went down successfully. The majority of the title matches have been booked now and other number one contender fights are in the books.

We've been controversy free for about 3 weeks now, so that's a new high score. All the feedback on the org and the events has been great to see so we're doing good.

So, I dunno what else to put into the intro...so let's go ahead?

The Events

Our events did great this week. We kicked off with our lowest rated card in a while; Highland 9 with a 67.20 rating. However we completely backed this up with a big 79.05 for Highland 10, and 70.86 for Highland 11.

I'm hoping we're able to stay above 70 for all of next week, and hopefully have a card break 80. When the titles start rolling in, we'll be more in the 100 category.

The events did really good financially. I'm considering talking with a few of the gym owners to see if we're at the stage we can start having full price top tier gyms on The Island.

Some of the performances I want to specifically point out was the comeback victory for Reilly Yates (1-0) over Marcos Luizano (0-1), the five second KO for Amaharo Xan (1-0) at Highland 9. Hans Holmes (3-0) continues to look like the most destructive force we have at heavyweight however his brother Hunter Holmes (1-2) was beat after an insane war for 2 minutes with Ganny Kogir (2-0). Another killer fight, which I'm extremely bitter about, was Wesley Janssen (2-0) with the late submission to beat Rustam Tsubekov (2-1-1), who was enroute to win the fight.

Managerial History

Taina Valkoinen
This Week's Fighters - Phillip Driver (2-0, Highland 9), Miguel Azevedo Souza (2-0 , Highland 10)

Historic Fighters - Guy Brush (7-8, 4x Highland Fighter), George Ringo (1-1, 3-2 KT, 2x Highland Fighter), Ed Driver (19-11-1, 17x Highland Fighter), Will Yu (5-5, 5x Highland Fighter), AJ Fresh (0-1, 1-4 KT, 5x Highland Fighter), St John Hewlett Packard (2-1 KT, 2x Highland Fighter), Pascal Lemouix (3-2, 5x Highland Fighter)

Arcalimon the Coach
This Week's Fighters - Dalton Dekker  (1-1, Highland 6)

Historic Fighters - Massimo Benvenuti (31-9, 28x Highland Fighter, 5x former HG MW Champion, HG Hall of Fame), Matt Couture (10-6-1, 10x Highland Fighter, HG LHW title challenger, The Island S3 Winner), Renato Laranja (17-8, 13x Highland Fighter, 2x HG BW title challenger), Vitaly Karelin (35-14, 22x Highland Fighter, 2x HG HW title challenger, Highland $1 Million Dollar Tournament Winner), Jon Askren (26-7, 22x Highland Fighter, former HG WW Champion), Kazushi Imanari (1-1, 1x Highland Fighter), Patrick Seery (35-9-1, 18x Highland Fighter, former HC FW Champion, 2x former HG FW Champion, HC Hall of Fame), Tito Kerr (10-8, 12x Highland Fighter, former HC HW title challenger), Wanderlei Santos (1-1, 1x Highland Fighter), Buddy Lyles (11-5, 3x Highland Fighter), Neil Drake (21-11, 17x Highland Fighter, 4x HG BW title challenger), Mark Sherk (2-1, 1x Highland Fighter), Brett Howell (1-1, 1x Highland Fighter)

Artur Jawetz

This Week's Fighters - Eric Reis (1-1, Highland 10)

Historic Fighters - Renato Rebelo (4-3, 3x Highland Fighter), Daniel Eye (10-6, 2x Highland Fighter), Noah Gundersen (4-3, 6x Highland Fighter), Mitch Clarke (4-3, 4x Highland Fighter), Gusttavo Coelho (6-4, 4x Highland Fighter), Luiz Da Silva (6-6, 3x Highland Fighter)

Matheus Silveira

This Week's Fighters - Larry Shark (1-0, Highland 3)

Historic Fighters - Nicollas Zatzmann (0-2, 1x Highland Fighter), Matheus Dublin (1-1, 1x Highland Fighter), Henry Williams (3-1, 1x Highland Fighter), Elliot Stabler (5-2, 2x Highland Fighter), Marcelo Strazas (8-18, 8x Highland Fighter), Renato Sobral (5-5, 4x Highland Fighter), Ian Behring (14-12, 15x Highland Fighter), Matthew The Devil (7-5, 6x Highland Fighter), Kazuo Mizaki (11-7, 5x Highland Fighter), Carlos Diego Ferreira (11-14, 5x Highland Fighter), Martyn Ford (17-13-1, 7x Highland Fighter)

Outro

Even though the manager history bit is clearly getting shorter, it's a hell of a time to do haha.#

So the goal is to start evaluating how to reinvest the money from the company into the fighters and training, start crowning some champs and maybe start peaking back towards the #1 promotion on The Island. IXF has been doing well, especially because it's a very small roster of only a few managers, but I think casting the net out and bringing a lot of new managers in will work out for us in the long term so I'm not worried.

Good luck in all your fights this week guys, go get it!

HIGHLAND 17
A Preview by Tycoon Hec

Gentleman, HIGHLAND 17 is finally here! The Bantamweight title is on the line. A lot of up and coming prospects will be showing their talent and multiple teammates will be going head to head on one of the best cards Highland is providing. With over 200 fighters on the roster, Callum Mcgregor looks to bring the very best fights to the fans of the Island regularly. With no shortage of fight cards lined up you can expect this promotion to be one of the very best promotions in the near future. My name is Tycoon Hec and you can expect Previews and Interviews from me going forward. I look forward to adding a little spice to your life with the words we use.  Starting in Descending Order is the Main event, followed by the Co-main all the way to the first fight on the main card. If you enjoy this preview please reach out to Callum Mcgregor. Good luck to all the fighters on this excellent fight card! Now let's get into the fight card Highland 17.

Jobber Joe vs Noel Diaz
For the Bantamweight Championship

The Bantamweight Title is on the Line between two training partners as Jobber Joe takes on  Noel Diaz! These two undefeated fighters have a combined win streak of 5 wins and neither fighter knows what it is like to ask the judges for a decision. Needless to say, this fight is going to bring the fans the aggressive pace mma is widely celebrated for. Jobber Joe (3-0), a remarkable boxer and talented wrestler training out of Tez’s Stand and Bang has finished all three of his opponents by knockout. Whether it is by a single overhand or uppercut or it is by a thunderous combination, Jobber is known for inflicting pain upon his opponents with his fists. Jobbers last opponent was seemingly doing well until the third round when Joe landed some hellacious strikes forcing the referee to stop the fight. The French boxer has had an extensive boxing record so the standup exchanges are usually what he will prefer in a fight. His opponent and gym partner, Noel Diaz is not particularly known for his striking, in fact, he has only thrown one punch his entire mma career and it missed by a wide margin. What Diaz does bring to the table is a web of submissions and transitions that create anxiety in any fighter and a good amount of trash talk. Recently Diaz had went in Highlands smack talk thread on March 25th to say,Jobber Joe is a pussy. Harry Henderson you are a f*****g pussy too! I'll slap both of you in the face when I see you.” Diaz (2-0), easily submitted both of his opponents proving to be a force to be reckoned with should the fight go to the ground. Critics of Noel Diaz have stated that he has not earned this title shot and has not proven himself at Highland. Diaz supporters scoff at this remark pointing to the supreme difference in their BJJ caliber insinuating that Jobber Joe will eventually tap. We had a chance to catch up with Jobber Joe and asked him a few questions:

  1. Is there any animosity going against your gym mate at Tezs Stand and Bang, Noel Diaz for the title?

    1.  I generally keep to myself at the gym, but no there is no animosity. It's just another fight for me. Although I definitely want that title belt for sure!

  2.  His submissions are absolutely ferocious, how do you plan to keep this fight on the ground?

    1.  Diaz is dangerous. I'm comfortable going to the ground. If it goes there, I will defend and get back up to bang it out.

  3.  What should we expect of this fight come Easter Sunday?

    1. Expect two of Fight Island's top bantamweights to deliver an exciting fight! Watch out for his slick submissions and my crafty boxing!

Reality is, this fight only goes one of two ways a knockout or a tapout. We know once Joe connects, it basically becomes lights out for anyone but we have never seen Diaz take a punch. We also know that when Diaz gets someone to the ground they are not escaping unless the bell saves them. With Jobbers proficient wrestling it is difficult for me to see how Diaz gets the fight to the ground, that shared Diaz is also known for having equal if not better wrestling.

Prediction: The Bantamweight Champion will be Noel Diaz via 2nd Round Submission.

Island Guy v Kristoffer Wexell
Middleweight Match

The Co-Main event offers Highland a fight that truly will begin to launch one of these fighters careers in the right direction. Island Guy who holds some wonderful Muay Thai pedigree hopes to provide a third knockout finish in his career against the wrestling phenom in Kristoffer Wexell. Wexell, who last fought two weeks ago, finished in the second round against Montoya. Island Guy lost a tough decision to the now Middleweight Champion in McKay. Island Guy is exceptionally dangerous on the feet and his striking proves to be no joke for anyone he matches up against. His striking tends to put his opponents to sleep and knowing Kristoffer has already experienced that he will probably be banking on just that. I think it is fair to assume Island Guy is going to be a little more aggressive against Wexell in this matchup in hopes to put him away early and put his name in contention for the title shot. Reports from Wexell’s gym mates have shared that his Morale is high despite being Tko’d in his last mma outing. His teammates regularly spar with him on Monday evenings have claimed he is a different fighter and if Island Guy slips up, it will be Wexell with his hand raised.

Prediction: Wexell will stun the audience with a surprise knockout in the first round.

Ron Johnson vs Sahara Sam
Featherweight Match

In a featherweight matchup of striking excellence we see two 25 year old's from opposite ends of the planet go at it. The 25 year old Canadian, Ron Johnson is making his return to the Highland cage after a two week break period taking on the Egyptian warrior, Sahara Sam 1-1, an aggressive kickboxer who strikes with quickness. Sahara is known for entertaining the fans with his wild hooks and lightning fast head kick attempts. Johnson, who is also known for his kickboxing, has a unique ability to regularly land thunderous leg kicks into his opponent. On visiting Ron Johnson at his gym, we quickly realized he actively trains with the Lightweight and Middleweight Champions of Highland. McKay vocalized how even though Ron is just starting out in MMA the sky's the limit for this guy. Coaches for Ron have shared they hope Sahara Sam engages in a standup fight with Ron as they know their featherweight fighter will run circles around him. Regardless of who wins you can expect a ton of exchanges on the standup. I would be surprised if we see one takedown attempt from either of these martial artists.

Prediction: Ron Johnson walks away with the split decision victory.

Millard Masters vs Apollo Turner
Bantamweight Match

When the Monken takes on the Rampage fight fans should expect nothing but non-stop action. The second fight on the main card proves to be one that will have you on the edge of your seat. Apollo Rampage Turner is looking to even out his record with another first round knockout against his opponent. To do that, he may be hoping to keep the same game plan and be a bit aggressive on the stand-up. His opponent is also known for being aggressive just with a different style. Millard Masters has taken down both of his opponents and relentlessly looked for the submission to put them away. In Masters last outing, he told his opponent he was going to break his leg just before the tap. Masters, a crowd pleaser in his last fight, is anticipating not only coming away with the win but the submission of the night as well and if he performs that what a fight it will be to see him as the next potential challenger for the bantamweight title.

Prediction: Millard Masters submits Apollo Turner in the first round.

Jorge Assvidal vs Bryan De Paula
Lightweight Match

Despite only being 18 against his 25 year old opponent, Bryan De Paula has a bit more experience in the world of Mixed Martial Arts than that of Jorge Assvidal. What a beautiful name. The two training partners at SMASH training have vocalized a supreme respect for one another in and out of the gym. Jorge is quite aware that the ground game is not where he wants to end up against Bryan but Bryan is understanding that Jorge will most likely get the finish if the fight stays on the feet. After his first mma fight, Bryan De Paulas coaches informed him that he had to be more aggressive in finding the submissions otherwise he would continue to get knocked out. During his second pro mma fight Bryan went for four submission attempts before finally securing one against a dangerous grappler. Assvidal, who has been working his takedown defense in training has been seen working longer hours as he knows this will be the toughest match-up he may face for a while and may set a precedent going forward. The coaches of the two men have informed me that it really is a toss up on this one and they could see it going either way. This will be the perfect fight to being the Main Card for Highland 17 as it surely will not go the distance.

Prediction: Assvidal counters the takedown and knocks out Bryan in the first round.
