Pure speculation here, but I remember towards the end of Kilo Maluga's run he was being retired and unretired before taking his next fights... retiring in general might preserve the fighter from long term stat losses?
I know my current assistant that retired months back is probably way better then he would be if he was still considered active (not that he'd win)
