Two major upsets shock Russia in Russian Mob Fighting’s Welterweight Grand Prix!

Russian Mob Fighting’s Welterweight Grand Prix kicked off on Thusday, August 27 in St. Petersburg Russia. In front of more than 2500 screaming Russian Mobsters, Plop Lesmar and Sylus Kilmister kicked the night off with a bang. After a one-sided first round, Lesmar started the second with a big combo and finished the fight just 5 seconds into the second.

The next fight started the tournament. Jonny Roberts made quick work of G Row rocking him with a head kick and finishing him with punches just over 2 minutes into the fight. Alan Crump and Kenny Cohen were next up. Crump wasted little time dispatching his foe with punches at the 2:05 mark of the first.

The next fight featured Igor Krinov and Sasha Lebedev. Sasha used his superior grappling to grind out a 3 round decision in a very exciting bout. Next up was Vitoli Balog and Shane C. Tanner. Tanner pounced early and Balog tapped from the damage just under a minute into the fight. Tanner has emerged as one of the favorites to win the $30,000 first prize. Following up that performance was tough but Steve Collins and Moishe Kaplan were up to the challenge. Collins won the first and put the injured Kaplan away in the second with a brutal spinning back fist a la Shonie Carter vs. Matt Serra. Collins will have his hands full in the next round against Tanner.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu purple belt Jeeves Smith took on Leopold Raskalnikov in the 7th bout of the night. Jeeves quickly clinched, pulled guard, and ended the fight with a tight triangle choke to advance to the next round. In the next fight, heavy favorite, Norifumi Yamamoto took on Shane R. Tanner. Tanner shocked ‘Kid’ with superior grappling and maintained top position for a good portion of the fight. Tanner used effective ground and pound to win the decision in a shocking upset.

In the last tournament bout of the night, #1 seed and heavy favorite to win the tournament, Marcus Miller, took on newcomer, Boxing Comte. Most fight insiders agreed that Miller would have a decisive advantage on his feet…but Comte had other ideas. Comte came out, guns blazing, and put Miller’s lights out with a big superman punch. This fight has turned RMF’s WW division upside down!

In the main event, RMF LW Champion Oleg Vasiliev took on top contender Michael Michaels. Like all his previous fights, Oleg took the fight to the mat and ended it with a slick armbar from his guard. Oleg retains his belt and stated that he was ready for his next challenge.

The Grand Prix will continue on September 6 so stay tuned in to see who comes out on top!

The finalists have been decided!

5-1-1 Jeeves Smith, the #3 seed, has submitted his way through the tournament. He is a Gracie Jui-Jitsu purple belt with very solid muay thai to boot. He is managed by Nathan Takada who also manages #3 P4P/#1 LW Steve Austin and #7 P4P/#1 HW Joseph Jones. He just defeated #15 seed Shane R. Tanner by triangle choke in the semis to earn his spot in the finals.

His opponent is 8-1 #5 seed, Shane C. Tanner. Tanner knocked off the surprise of the tourament, #16 seed Boxing Comte via unanimous decision to earn his spot in the finals. Tanner is a very good wrestler who has utilized excellent top control in all of his fights. He is managed by Chowprayer Owner, This Guy and is Chowprayer's official representative in RMF's WW GP. This Guy manages other strong fighters like Dan Bowbish and Quinton Hach.

Handicapping the fight:

Stand up - Tanner has competent boxing but Smith has mediocre boxing and respectable MT. I don't feel stand up will decide this fight but I give a slight edge to Smith.

Wrestling - Tanner is a proficient wrestler and Smith has shown no wrestling to speak of. Tanner has a very big advantage here.

Ground Game - Tanner has been submitted by a purple belt in his only loss but so has Smith. This facet of the fight comes down to Tanner's top control vs. Smith's guard game. In a battle of blue belt vs. purple belt, its hard to not give the advantage to the purple but the advantage is only slight.

Managers - Nathan Takada, despite only managing 4 fighters, is proven to be one of the best managing 2 top 10 P4P fighters. But, This Guy has been around the block. He manages 10 fighters and has a massive experience advantage. With over 60 fights under his belt, This Guy has seen it all and won't be surprised by anything Takada has in store. But, at the end of the day, Takada has a very proven track record and I would not bet against him.

Its a very even fight that I am extremely excited for. In a battle of RMF vs. Chowprayer, I am obviously pulling for my representative but it would not surprise me if the wily vet pulls off the win.
