MIDWEEK MADNESS 3

09.10.13

Hyashi´s Lounge

MAIN EVENT

205 lbs

Fernandez (6-4) vs Zee (3-0)

Two submission specialists square off in a fight with future title implications. Fernandez has better muay thai skills and is a BJJ brown belt. Zee possesses better wrestling and boxing. It will certainly be interesting to see where this fight will end up and by which fighters initiative. I will not predict a winner in this one, but I´m guessing this will go to the judges.

CO - MAIN EVENT

205 lbs

Grey (7-0) vs Messerschmidt (1-1)

If the main event feels difficult when trying to choose a winner, the same cannot be said for this fight. Grey is a fighter on a mission for the belt and Messerschmidt will have to perform better than ever before to come out victorious. Both fighters are on an equal basis when talking about wrestling and BJJ, but Grey has an huge advantage on the feet. Grey might want to keep this standing while Messerschmidt wants the fight to the ground at all cost. Grey wins by KO in the 2nd round.

MAIN CARD

265 lbs McHaggis (3-1) vs Rento (1-0)

135 lbs Stevens (3-4) vs Sampaio (8-6)

185 lbs Witson (4-0) vs McShane (4-5)

CFS 24: FORGED BY BATTLE

MAIN EVENT

135 lbs title

Diego Godin (7-0) vs David Lang (6-0)

Two unbeaten warriors and two of the brightest stars Crucible Fights Sydney has to offer will fight for the title. Defending champion Godin has always relied on his submission game, but faces a difficult task if he wants to continue impose his will on the challenger. Six of Godins wins have come by submission. Lang, who by the way is the reigning champion at 155 lbs, looks to add another belt to his curriculum vitae and holds a small edge over the champion in the stand-up game. Both fighters have a brown belt in BJJ, but Lang is the better wrestler in this match-up. Both have a good chance of being the one leaving the cage undefeated, but I predict that Lang will win by decision.

CO - MAIN EVENT

135 lbs

Frontalik Wilder (9-2) vs Urijah Faber (5-0)

The co-main event sees 2 fighters close to being top contenders fight for the next step towards a shot at championship gold. Once again we get to see 2 brown belts in action and Wilder has been a master at putting those BJJ skills to good use. He holds all 9 of his wins by submission. Faber has a very small edge in boxing and maybe the key needed to unlock a victory from this fight can be found here. This will also be a close call, but I think Faber walks out of this one with his perfect record unblemished.

MAIN CARD

185 lbs Chael Sonnen (7-4) vs Byongsun Robinson (6-2)

Two pretty evenly matched guys fight for better positions within the weight class rankings. Sonnen wins by TKO.

155 lbs KH Routakirves (6-3) vs Cam Lawson (4-5)

Lawson had a tough start to his career in Crucible Fights but seems to have re-invented himself and rides a 2 fight winning streak into this one. Routakirves has always been at the top in the division and was also in the finals of the TWGC. Routakirves by submission.

205 lbs Farid Bashir (4-0) vs George Gilbert (4-2-1)

Both fighters are at their best when boxing, so this might come down to the fact that Bashir is the more well rounded of the two. Bashir by TKO.

CFS 25: TALL & PROUD

MAIN EVENT

265 lbs

Raging Bull (6-0) vs Cain Velasquez (5-1)

Bull is the current AFP (New York based org) champion with a mission here in Sydney. After besting all the competition thrown at him in New York he is aiming for the next title. With a win against a dangerous up and comer he might just get what he is asking for. Velasquez however is on a mission of his own. He wants to the world to know that he is the one to watch out for in the future. He has only fought tough opponents since signing with the org and is also close at a title shot of his own. Velasquez has the grappling advantage and Bull is a master in Muay Thai. All of Velasquez wins have come by submission and Bull has won 5 by some kind of KO. I really cannot see this one going the distance and will play it safe and say that Bull wins by KO early in the 3rd.

CO - MAIN EVENT

265 lbs

Kyle Holman (4-0) vs Dan Severn (8-2)

In another heavyweight affair, former champion Severn fights rising star Holman. Holman is a great boxer and all his wins have come by KO. Severn has an advantage in experience and being the better grappler. He also owns 4 Submission of the Night bonuses, making him very exciting to watch. Holman is dangerous and most likely a future title contender, but for now I think Severn will navigate his way through these waters and win by submission in the 2nd round.

MAIN CARD

185 lbs Dan Henderson (3-1) vs Ari Sotaheimo (7-1)

Sotaheimo has been relying on his Muay Thai to get him to the top of his division, while Henderson puts his faith into his boxing and wrestling. Sotaheimo has 6 KO´s and needs to get things done in the first round if he wants to win. If the fights drags on for longer Henderson will win.

135 lbs Billy Axe (7-1) vs Uriah Primetime (9-2)

The winner from this fight will most like get a shot at the title. Axe has the experience from fights with high stakes, as he is the former champion and will win this by decision.

155 lbs Jatupong Kacanklic (5-0) vs Max Sharkhausen (5-3)

Two of the more promising fighters in the 155 lbs weight class will square off for better positions within the weight class. Kacanklic has won all his fights by submission, so no surprise where he wants to take this fight. Sharkhausens game is purely about standing up. My prediction is Sharkhausen by KO.

CFS 27: HOSTILE RECEPTION

MAIN EVENT

135 lbs title

Godin (8-0) vs Faber (6-0)

Reigning champion Diego Godin has been very impressive in his latest fights and looks to continue his dominance. Faber, the challenger, however has other ideas. Skillwise both match eachother well and no big differences can be found between the two. Both are BJJ brown belts and are equaly skilled wrestlers. Both have lacking skills in muay thai and boxing. The only real difference I am able to come up with is that, so far, Godin has fought tougher opponents in more high profile fights. Faber has bested some of the toughest in the weight class too, otherwise he would not have been given this opportunity, but I think this will be the difference that turns things into the favor of the champ. Godin wins a close decision, but Faber cannot be counted out in future title speculations.

CO - MAIN EVENT

205 lbs

Cutter (6-1) vs Zee (4-0)

Cutter has the advantage standing and Zee is the better grappler. Five of Cutters wins have come by KO and Zee has won 3 out of 4 by submission. Cutter might want to stay on the outside and try to kick Zee´s legs into slowmotion or if he feels confident enough he´ll go for the Thai clinch in search for yet another KO. Zee wants this fight to go all horizontal and bring his opponent into his world. This is pretty much a coin toss as both fighters have the tools to walk away with the W. After tossing my coin I´ll go for Cutter by KO in the 2nd round.

MAIN CARD

185 lbs Robinson (6-3) vs Sotaheimo (7-2)

This match-up resembles the co-main event in that sense that Robinson is the more decorated grappler and owns 5 of his wins by submission. Sotaheimo on the other hand has the edge standing up. Six of his wins have come by some sort of KO. Sotaheimo by decision.

185 lbs Gustilo (6-4) vs Witson (4-1)

And continuing the theme of stand-up fighter against grappler in this one as 2 promising fighters have a go at each other. Gustilo has won 4 by submission while Witson has won all 4 by decision. My gut feeling is that Witson wins yet another decision.

135 lbs Rauparaha (3-1) vs Ax (5-7)

Rauparaha is promising up and comer and he squares off against seasoned veteran Ax. Rauparaha is decently well rounded while Ax´s strengths can be found in the grappling department. This will be a close one too, but I think Rauparaha wins by T(KO) in the 3rd.

Good evening to all our fight fans out there! This is Ed Winchester, reporting to you live, from the Crucible Fights Sydney headquarters. In todays show we will be talking to CEO Frank Abbott about the orgs upcoming Battle for Bondi event. The event takes place at the Bondi Outdoor Arena on the 30th of November.

- Mr Abbott, it´s a pleasure having you join us today.

- Thank you, Ed! Always fun talking to you.

- Before we talk about the Battle for Bondi event, could you tell us how things have been going for CFS this far?

- Sure thing. At this point the org is pretty much where it should be at this stage. We are constantly being ranked between the 50 - 60 best orgs in the world, which is ok, but we are pushing for the top 50. The Battle for Bondi is one example of our attempts of achieving that. We have a good roster of fighters, enough depth in the weight classes with a good mix of seasoned fighters versus promising youngsters. We also try to take everyones wishes into consideration, which we have managed to do relatively well, keeping the majority of people involved with us happy. CFS has also been able to afford good contracts to its fighters, mainly because of my deep pockets. This has resulted in us making financial losses on the majority of our events. These losses have however been small, we are only talking of about 10-20k after the bonuses have been paid out. Recently we have started to make some profit, but it has not been enough to cover expenses and my personal money has still been needed on a regular basis. This is something we will have to start balancing out if we want to uphold an healthy business for everyone involved. This being said, no one needs to worry about their salaries being lowered, but there wont be as huge increases as there has been in the past. But, all in all, we are doing good and we have certainly have a spot in the Sydney MMA scene.

- Sounds good. Would you now like to tell us abit more about CFS 30: Battle for Bondi?

- Battle for Bondi is the first time we take an event to such a big arena. It can hold up to 5750 spectators and it is, in fact, an outdoor arena. This should make for an interesting MMA experience for any fan of the sport.

- I´m sure it will and I´m certainly going to be in attendance.

- Nice to hear, Ed. By the way, we already have 2 confirmed title fights for that evening. In the 170 lbs weight class, current champion Diego Brandao will fight Lone Wolf and in the 205 lbs weight class Gandalf Grey will fight Terry Thompson for the vacant title. We are of course looking to sign more high profile fights to this card. Fights which clearly affect the top 10 rankings. We hope we´ll be able to make a new attendance record on that evening and we also aim for a new event rating record. Or current record stands at 164.69, but we´d like it to be closer to 200 after this.

- Anything else you would like to say to those watching?

- We will be giving the normal preview before the event, but we will also try to interview some of the fighters on this card for all of you to read and I´m sure we have some other surprises up our sleeves too. On top of that, I´m hoping the fighters themselves would take an active role hyping their fight and this event. Actually, I´m announcing a competition right here and right now. The fighter/fighters with the best trash talk will be awarded with 25k each.

- Ok, that´s pretty much all we have time for today. Thanks again, Mr Abbott and best of luck with the upcoming events!

- You´re welcome! Remember to support your local MMA orgs

Hello everyone, this is Ed Winchester, with the latest update on the Battle for Bondi event. These past weeks sure have been hectic as the people here at Crucible Fights Sydney are doing their best to fill this card with interesting fights. Let´s find out what CEO Abbott can reveal for us today.

- So, Mr Abbott, can you tell us anything new about the upcoming event?

- Yes, I certainly can, Ed. At this point we have four more fights confirmed besides the two already earlier confirmed title fights. Perennial contender Doc Evil will fight rising star Thai Muay in the 185 lbs division. This is one I´ll be watching closely, as this is a fight which might affect the champions future plans. A fight with similar implications is KH Routakirves fighting Charles Douglas in the 155 lbs division. Routakirves should at this point be a familiar face to all those of you who follow Crucible Fights Sydney events, while Douglas is a new to the org, but not the fight game. Douglas is one of those with the ability to make an impact on the top rankings from the get go, so should be equally interesting to watch this one. On our preliminary card we now have 2 fights confirmed. Buddy Brandon fights Jamie Johnson and Rich Castellano tests Tykwon Dont.

- Good fights indeed, Mr Abbott. Hopefully you can keep on delivering with the remaining fights too.

- Well, all fight offers are out and we are only waiting for some managers to accept or decline their offers. Please be swift with them by the way, so that if your fighters dont feel up to the test, we are able to find repacements in time.

- Any other news concerning the event, Mr Abbott?

- We are, as we speak, trying to put together a few interviews for you guys to read. So keep an eye out for them here in the near future. Now that we have more fights confirmed, I´d like to remind the fighters and their management that my smack talk competition is still on. The best ones will be awarded with 25k each. Also, the bonuses for this event will be 7000 each, so this is also an improvement compared to our regular events.

- Sounds great and I´m certain the fighters always appreciate more cash. Thank you for the update, Mr Abbott. Cannot wait for more info about this event.

- My pleasure as always, Ed!

Charles Douglas ( 7-3, 155 lbs )

- Your favorite MMA - host, Ed Winchester, here again, this time joined by one of Crucible Fights Sydneys exiting new signings. Welcome to the show, Charles!

- Thanks Ed, honored to be here.

- Tell me Charles, Bondi Outdoor Arena, 5750 spectators, what are your first impressions?

- I'm really looking forward to being at Bondi Outdoor Arena again, I picked up my first ever win that night. I think only 800 people were there at all that night, and I was first up on a 10 fight card so there were probably only 200 when I was fighting so I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a sell out and being higher on the card. It's Australia's only purpose built outdoor arena, it's walking distance from a world famous beach, what more can you ask for?

- You might have an unexpted edge by actually having fought at the arena before and I agree, what more can an MMA - fan actually ask for, as the stage that´s being set certainly is unique. By the way, how have you enjoyed your stay here in Crucible Fights Sydney so far?

- This will be my first fight with CFS. But I've been training with Domonico Cuccaro since our early days at SEFC, after that went bankrupt he signed on here and loved it and when I recently got out of a bad contract and was offered a place here he spoke so highly I turned down my other offers to come here.

- Yes, we heard there was some serious competition for your signature. I´m sure all Crucible Fight fans agree when I say we are more than happy to have you here with us. How is the training going so far, anything special for this camp and opponent?

- No special training for this fight Ed. I got caught in a bad contract that saw me training without a fight a long, long time. I'm really happy with where I'm at right now, and I'm focussing on my long term training goals rather than this fight.

-Please give us your thoughts on the upcoming fight?

- I'm looking forward to it. Routakirves is a bit younger than me but has had a few more fights, and I know he is very reliant on his ground game in general, but especially his submissions, obviously I was a jujitsu guy before I took up MMA so that suits me, also I've developed a lot in terms of my stand up over the last few months and I think I am now the more versatile fighter than him. I've also noticed all his losses have been by KO so hopefully I'm a chance of knocking him out. I also believe I'm in better condition than he is so he will have to stop me to win it because I won't fade away, and noone has ever stopped me.

- The bookies seem to have you as the slight favorite going into this fight, but I´m sure you wont be underestimating your opponent. Anything you want to say to the fans or to Routakirves?

- To the fans, I know you guys know Routakirves because he has fought here for a while, but I'm hoping you'll get behind me when I step into that cage because I'm the local boy from just up the freeway in Newcastle and he is from Finland, show me a bit of love as the Aussie in this fight. I don't need to say anything Routakirves, that's what the cage is for.

- Anything else you would like to say before we end this interview?

I've never been subbed, and I've never been knocked out. I'm undefeated at Lightweight and I'm planning on staying that way for a long time. Looking forward to my CFS debut. Cheers.

- Thank you, Charles and best of luck!

I think so too and its probably the first fight result I'll check as soon as the event has been held. Hopefully Raging Bull will improve a bit in the scouting department though, as Raimo already have two convincing victories in the org and that is why he is the challenger ;D Best of luck to both fighters and their management!

Kalevi Holger Routakirves ( 9-3, 155 lbs )

Time for our second interview in regards to next Saturdays big Crucible Fights Sydney event and this time we sit down and talk to Kalevi Routakirves. He was born in Finland but has become something of a veteran face and perennial contender here in CFS.

- So Kalevi, Bondi Outdoor Arena, 5750 spectators, what thoughts come to mind?

- Well Ed, first of all let me say thanks for giving me the chance to come and talk about my upcoming fight. I am very excited. I've never fought in front of a crowd that big so I'm really looking forward to that. CFS is clearly going in the right direction, and I'm excited to be part of it.

- That´s true, they seem to make a push at being a top 40 org before the end of the year. Will be interesting to see if they are able to make it. How have you enjoyed your stay here in Crucible Fights Sydney so far?

- It's been fantastic. I've had 10 fights in CFS and nothing but good things to say. I've gotten competetive fights and it wasn't a problem to take a little time off to compete in TWGC, so it's all good.

- You certainly made a good run in the first TWGC ever and managed to gather quite a few new fans of your grappling. How is the training going/gone so far, anything special for this camp and opponent?

- I actually moved to Sydney some time ago Ed, so I'm still looking for a good private gym to train at. Sometimes I've had to go to another gym to get the level of training I need in some areas, but no excuses, I've trained hard for this fight. Invitation to a private gym would make it a little easier though. *hint*

- Training conditions are certainly crucial, especially at this stage of your career. Can you give us your thoughts on the upcoming fight?

- Charles Douglas is a legit prospect so I can see why he was signed. I was offered a chance to welcome him to CFS so of course I accepted it. We are both originally grapplers so things could get pretty interesting if it hits the mat, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't. It's a fight and anything can happen.

- Anything you want to say to the fans or your opponent before we have to end?

- It's going to be a great card with great fights on the biggest venue so far, so don't miss this one. The house will be packed and I'm gonna be the first guy to stop Douglas.

- Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Kalevi and best of luck with the fight!

CFS 30

Battle for Bondi

at the

Bondi Outdoor Arena

on the

30th of November

MAIN EVENT

170 lbs Title

Lone Wolf (6-0) vs Diego Brandao (8-1), Champion

http://www.mmatycoon.com/gallery/18/18w1.jpghttp://www.mmatycoon.com/gallery/30/30b18.jpg

Lone Wolf Diego Brandao

In the main event two alpha males will collide for the 170 lbs title. Will Brandao still be the meanest dog of the division after this one, or will it be the Wolf that howles in victory? On paper this should be interesting. Both fighters are, by the way, managed by Top 10 managers giving this fight some added prestige. The champ has a great ground game, with some decent boxing added to the mix. The challenger has a clear advantage in Muay Thai and only the slightest of disadvantages on the ground, making him the more well rounded fighter. I think Brandao wants this fight to hit the floor, while Wolf might favor the clinch to grind out a victory. This is certainly a fight that can go either way, but one thing I am pretty sure of though, is that this one is going to the judges. Both have had a tendency to that, as both have earned 50% of their wins through decision. Any more precise predictions I am not willing to make at this point...

CO - MAIN EVENT

205 lbs Title

Gandalf Grey (8-0) vs Terry Thompson (10-0)

http://www.mmatycoon.com/gallery/1/1w2.jpghttp://www.mmatycoon.com/gallery/22/22b7.jpg

Gandalf Grey Terry Thompson

This fight is for the vacant 205 lbs title between 2 undefeated fighters. Both have very good boxing skills and decent muay thai. Both are on an equal basis in BJJ skills, both have a blue belt, but Grey holds an slight advantage in wrestling. This might become a boxing match between the two as both have gathered 6 wins through some kind of KO before this encounter. I believe Terry wants to keep his distance to Grey, while Grey might want to take it into the clinch. This fight will end before the fifth round and I´m going with Grey in this one.

MAIN CARD

155 lbs

KH Routakirves (9-3) vs Charles Douglas (7-3)

Newcomer Douglas challenges perennial contender Routakirves for the next step towards earning a title shot. Douglas by decision.

265 lbs

Cain Velasquez (5-2) vs Dan Severn (9-3)

Promising prospect Velasquez tries to outwrestle Severn. Both are ground fighters and good ones, but Severn earns the decision thanks to the experience advantage.

185 lbs

Doc Evil (8-2) vs Thai Muay (6-0)

Both find their strength in muay thai, but Evil is a bit more well rounded with better boxing and BJJ. However that being said, I´m going with Muay in this one. Muay by TKO.

UNDERCARD

185 lbs Domonico Cuccaro (5-5) vs Gunner Reed (10-3-1)

135 lbs Urijah Faber (7-1) vs Dan Price (3-1)

170 lbs Rich Castellano (7-5) vs Tykwon Dont (4-4)

205 lbs Buddy Brandon (1-1) vs Jamie Johnson (2-0)
