Cervantes De Leon

After finally breaking a 3 fight losing streak, De Leon was delighted to talk to our reporter.

R: Hey De Leon, great job on the win tonight, how does it feel to finally get a W today?

C.D.L: Hey man, it's great to get this win, and to get it in this way is every more satisfying. He brought me into his clinch game, and I beat him there. The feeling of facing a guy in his own element and coming out on top is deeply satisfying. Finishing him early in the second delighted me, as I did not want to allow him a chance in the clinch again.

R: From here, where do you see yourself in the division?

C.D.L: Im pretty much stranded in the middle. I will just have to hope I can win my next fight which will hopefully allow me to move up the division and keep competing. I know that I need to work on staying on my feet but right now, I want a rematch with Roman Volkov! He beat me in our first fight, and I am above him in the rankings, but I will risk that in order to get my revenge! From there, I will have to look at who is around me.

R: Well as always it is a pleasure talking to you, and I am looking forward to seeing you in the cage again!

C.D.L: Thank you, I look forward to whoever is my challenge

LFC 25 Penncil vs Kahuna Preview by Merrick Shamrock

What’s up everyone ? Merrick Shamrock here with a brand new preview, this one is for LFC 25 with the main event BJ Penncil vs Timo Kahuna. There will be no title fights on this evening, but that doesn’t make it a less exciting/important of LFC. The 2 Lightweight titans Dr Dre and Duncan Jon will fight for a high spot in the rankings. Another very interesting bout will be the clash between Ben Askren and Miron Karoa for the #1 contender spot. As always the basic stuff: this event will take place in Hard Knocks (3000) on 10 May 2014. If you have something to say to your opponent (smack talk), feel free to post something in the LFC Thread: http://www.mmatycoon.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42026

Middleweight: BJ Penncil (9-2-0) vs Timo Kahuna (7-3-0)

This will be our main event of the evening, I’m very excited for this one. Penncil is one of the fiercest grapplers of the whole LFC MW division. He won all of his fights by Submission, I think he has the most fights in LFC (7 fights: 5-2). He was also the first LFC MW Champ. Kahuna on the other hand is a scary guy with strong KO power, he has just brutal power in his hands. I saw his finish in his last fight (vs Dwayne Hopkins) were he just blew Hopkins away. Penncil improved his Wrestling that can be a major factor in this fight: can Kahuna sprawl Penncil’s takedowns. Kahuna was defeated by our one and only Mudzuri (who has a basic ground game), so I think that this can be easily the hardest fight for Kahuna. I almost forgot that this bout is a rematch. If Kahuna can swing one of those brutal shots at Penncil before he get’s dragged to the ground, he has the fight in his pocket. I am still going for Penncil (ground game is too strong).

My Prediction: Penncil gets Kahuna on the ground and gets the Submission victory.

Lightweight: Dr Dre (5-0-0) vs Duncan Jon (7-1-0)

A classic grappler vs boxer match-up, Dre is currently one of the few undefeated LFC fighters, he has a very sharp ground game, but absolutely no stand-up game.. He’s a new fighter for LFC (only one fight in LFC), but I can’t underestimate this guy he defeated some strong guys. Jon is better known in the LFC (3-0 record), he just likes to demolish his opponents with excellent boxing technique. He already beated a fighter like Dre (Rusty Fishhook) by TKO. I think that Jon will be too dominant for Dre. I know this is a short text, but I just know that Jon will finish Dre fast with brutal strikes.

My Prediction: Jon wins by (T)KO

Welterweight: Ben Askren (8-2-0) vs Miron Karoa (8-2-0)

A very interesting match-up between two great ground game specialists. Askren is a scary dude when he’s on top of his opponent, he’s more a Gnp wrestler who uses every strike that can put his opponent asleep. He’s our former LFC WW champ and has a pretty extensive record in LFC (4-2). Karoa is more the type of guy who likes to take his opponents down and just snap their arms (4 Kimura wins and 3 armbar wins). He’s one of the best grapplers of the Island (Strong Wrestling and a BJJ Brown Belt). This will be a tough test for both of these fighters. Askren never fought such a strong grappler (except Leigertwood) and Karoa never fought such a powerful/strong wrestlers. We all know one thing, this fight is not going to end by judges. Askren wins by (T)KO or Karoa by Submission. I’m not sure, but I think that Askren will have the edge in this fight.

My Prediction: Askren wins by (T)KO

Heavyweight: Ray Force (8-2-0) vs JoJo Kush (5-3-0)

Our only Heavyweight match-up (and rematch) of this evening between two KO artists. Force is an aggressive fighter who feels comfortable on his feet, almost every victory of him came by using his hands of stone (7 of 8 by (T)KO Punches). He’s also the former Chaos HW Champ. Kush on the other hand feels more comfortable on the ground, from there he throws a barrage of strikes to end the fight, his first fight was against Force, he lost in the 1st round by tap out due strikes. Kush had a rough start of his pro career, but he’s getting better and better every fight (5 of his last 6 fights won). He was also our former HW Champ. Now the big question is: Can Kush bring Force to the ground and finish him off with some GnP ?

I think he definitely could, but Force is just too strong for him. So I’m going with a solid KO Punch of Force.

My Prediction: Force wins by KO

Other Fights:

Welterweight: Lim Hyun Gyu vs Dexter Leigertwood

Prediction: Leigertwood wins by Submission

Featherweight: Frenk Karleon vs Johny Rico

Prediction: Rico wins by Decision (Unanimous)

Welterweight: Wayne Cambell vs Phat Funk

Prediction: Funk wins by (T)KO

Middleweight: Vlad Didenko vs Dirk Walters

Prediction: Didenko wins by Submission

Lightweight: Casey Penn vs Levron Cleiv

Prediction: Cleiv wins by (T)KO

You always pick against my guy one day he will show you!

Hey man, it's not personal :) . I just analyse things (morale, energy, experience, winning or losing streak,...) and then I make my decision who has the biggest chance of winning. I think that Penncil is going to win. I even picked against my own fighter :P .

You get mine wrong every time, so I'd prefer it if you went back to predicting losses for me!

Pencil vs Kahuna was surely the most unexpected finish in LFC and Maybe Tycoon History when you look closer of what happened in that fight, UNBELIEVABLE !!! 72 takedown attempt and only one landed to the ground I think both fighter learned a lot from that fight

LFC 27 Berzins vs Shaw Preview by Merrick Shamrock

What’s up everyone ? How are you guys doing J ? For the first time ever a fighter will try to capture 3 belts (on the Island) and that fighter is the one and only Samuel Berzins. His brother will try to beat up the former MW champ Josiah Mudzuri. I will change my words again, this is without a doubt the BIGGEST event of LFC and probably the Island ! 4 Title fights and almost every fighter on this card has a lot of hype and popularity.

So let’s tune in, first of course the basic stuff: this event is going to take place in the Hard Knocks (3000) on 17 May 2014.

If you have something to say to your opponent (smack talk), feel free to post something in the LFC Thread: http://www.mmatycoon.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42026

Lightweight Championship: Samuel Berzins (7-1-0) (170 & 185 lbs ©) vs Brad Shaw (10-1-0) ©

I hope everyone is ready for the main event, because it will be the biggest fight (on the Island) you will ever see. Berzins did the impossible, he made Island history by winning 2 belts, but that doesn’t still his hunger oh no…. he’s going for 3 belts. He hits like a truck (all of his wins by (T)KO) and he has one of the best takedown defenses I ever seen. Shaw is probably the most feared grappler of the whole LFC (and maybe Island) with his BJJ Brown Belt and proficient wrestling. He likes to take the fight on the ground and then finish his opponent with Submission attempts and sometimes GnP. It’s just crazy this fight. If Berzins actually win this one he makes himself (unofficially) The God of the Island, he can try to fight the other organisation champs (Gesufale,Ponjev,…), but I think he would obliterate them too (except Gesufale). If Shaw wins this bout, he made Berzins vulnerable for grapplers. The major important factor of this fight is Berzins sprawl & brawl technique and Shaw’s takedown offense. I analysed everything and I stay with Berzins.

My Prediction: Berzins wins the LW belt and becomes the absolute P4P #1 of the Island

Middleweight: Josiah Mudzuri (6-1-0) vs Daniel Berzins (7-1-0)

One of the most interesting fights in LFC (my opinion) between our former MW champ

Mudzuri and (one of the Berzins brothers) Daniel Berzins. Mudzuri was roughly woken up from his dream (undefeated champ) by Samuel Berzins, but it is well known that Samuel is almost undefeatable (uncertain of course). Mudzuri stays without a doubt my favourite LFC fighter, it doesn’t matter if he lost his title, he stays the guy who surprises me every single time. Berzins changed weightclasses for his brother. I see that KO power is something common in the Berzins family. He’s currently 4-0 in LFC and defeated almost all the good guys (Jeggins, Askren, Karoa,…) except Mudzuri. Mudzuri will probably go to the ground and get the tap out, but that’s not easy when you are facing Berzins (very strong sprawl & brawl). I would like to see one of these Berzins brothers get defeated J, that would be a news flash for sure. Mudzuri has got a chance, but Berzins as a bigger one. His KO power is undeniable.

My Prediction: Berzins wins by (T)KO

Middleweight: Gwan Dylan (7-3-0) vs Dick Jeggins (7-2-0)

A much anticipated rematch between two MW giants. Dylan is an excellent grappler with some boxing skills, he has a BJJ Brown belt and proficient wrestling. It will be his third fight against Jeggins (he lost both), so he has to prove himself of being a worthy contender for the MW belt. Jeggins is on a rough 2 fight losing streak (both by TKO), for me he his still one of the best fighters in LFC. He has the edge in Wrestling, but not in the grappling department. I am sure of one thing, this fight is going to start on the ground and end on the ground. Dylan has improved (skills) since his last fight against Jeggins. I am really hesitating about the result (I always give a prediction). If Dylan wins this fight he has proven himself worthy of being a champ, if he doesn’t his career will go downwards. Jeggins need this win to break his losing streak and get back that habit of his (winning).

My Prediction: Dylan wins by Submission

Featherweight Championship: DeMarcus Bojan (8-2-0) © vs James Briggs (5-1-0)

Another Title defense of Bojan against the strong Briggs. DeBojan comes back of a disappointing loss against our LW champ Shaw, it was an epic battle of 4 rounds (almost 5). At the end Shaw could tap Bojan out, he was shocked of course, because he tought that Shaw was a big joke and that he would dominate him. Briggs is currently on a 2 fight-winning streak and he likes to keep that streak. He is known for his remarkable wrestling skills and GnP (all of his wins by TKO). Now did Bojan recover from his loss ? Yes he did and he is ready to defend his title, I think Briggs has a big chance of winning this (better skills). I saw that Briggs has a problem with his morale (pretty low), I think that Bojan has the eye of the tiger this evening J.

My Prediction: Bojan wins by Submission and keeps his shiny strap

Other Fights:

Heavyweight Title Fight: Marco Buhler vs Wayne Wade

Prediction: Buhler wins by (T)KO and retains his belt

Middleweight: Cervantes De Leon vs Ruslan Aslamanov

Prediction: De Leon wins by TKO

Featherweight: Blagojevic Batakovic vs Frenk Karleon

Prediction: Batakovic wins by Submission

Lightweight: Kevin Belingon vs Gregor Erikson

Prediction: Erikson wins by Submission

Bantamweight Title Fight: Ruud Gullit vs Eduardo Sanchez

Prediction: Gullit wins by (T)KO and becomes the new champ

I hope Berzins wins. I really do. In his first challenge he'll face a different beast, and get his head knocked off his fucking shoulders. - Chocolate Al

I wouldn't be so sure about that, Al is a tough guy, but I don't think he has the KO power of Berzins :)

Eesh, said Berzins but meant Benedict. But yeah, Benedict I will rip your fucking head to pieces boy, LFC owner or matchmaker or whatever book it up for the BIGGEST fight LFC has ever fucking seen. No joke. The number 10 ranked Light Heavyweight in the Island, former number 10 P4P fighter, former number 1 LHW in the Island facing the young, stupid Benedict. Feed me him so I can dance around his broken corpse, give me that shot and I'll knock his head off his shoulders and on to the thirst of the Islanders who feed off our blood.

For it is my DUTY, my moral obligation and my God given will that I obliterate this man in ways seen as impossible by commoners. This man has done nothing to me....other than rage me with fury, and it is my word that I will use this fury in annihilating this powerless, worthless, pity of a man.

Give me that fight, and I will retire him, I will make sure the Island never hears about no Benedict again, for it is my name who they shall hear, the name of the HERO, the name of the RULER, the name of the KING - Chocolate Al.

A Q&A with Phat Funk by Merrick Shamrock

http://mmatycoon.com/gallery/23/23w25.jpg

Today we have as guest the Welterweight contender Phat Funk, he will fight Ben Askren for a dominant spot in the Welterweight rankings at LFC 29.

Merrick Shamrock: Hey what’s up Phat, how are you doing mate ?

Phat:Man i doing great morale at all time high i on top of the world at moment.

Merrick Shamrock: Now I’m really impressed by your record (7-0-0 and 7 by (T)KO) ! You always finish your opponents pretty quick, is that the method you are going to use against Askren ?

Phat:I never like to leave it in the hand of the judges .If i got knockout power why not use it and end the fight early.

Merrick Shamrock:Who’s your biggest rival at the moment ? Why ?

Phat:Has to be Berzins .Being that champ in three divisions he is stealing my thunder a bit.i known i am the best young fighter on the island and no one taught a young man like myself could compete but i proving all the critics wrong .A title and hopefully going a long way in the big tournament at the end will silence the critics once and for all.

Merrick Shamrock: Whose hands will be raised at LFC 25 ? Why ?

Phat:Of course i think i will win. He is has a very good ground game but i don't think he have time to get me to the ground .Once i get the clinch it going to be all over for him

Merrick Shamrock: If you win this fight, who would you like to be your next opponent ?

Phat:That a hard question i suppose Miron "Strangler" Karoa or Dexter "Dangerous" Leigertwood .I what to get to the top of division and these guys or in my way at moment.

Merrick Shamrock: What do you think of our triple champ Berzins, because there’s a chance you are going to face him ?

Phat:Been very impressed by what i have see so far .We are every similar fighters. Both very good in the clinch i think i will just about shade it .My knees or killer i don't think he be able to handle then .

Merrick Shamrock: What are your plans for after the Island ?

Phat:Training training and more training lol :).I going to train for a good long time before even considering going to a org on the main land .Location don't know yet what to see which good gyms or available

Merrick Shamrock: I want to wish you good luck with your fight against Askren and future ?

Phat:Thank you nice chat .make sure everybody come watch the fight it going to be a cracker .

LFC 29 Leigertwood vs Karoa Preview by Merrick Shamrock

What’s up everyone ? How are you guys doing J ? Another exciting evening with a very hyped card. Our triple champ Samuel Berzins will defend his MW title againt the storng grappler BJ Penncil. The HW clash between 2 strikers: Numero Deux and Ray Force.

The former HW title contender Rocky Drago will try to put an end of his 2 fight losing streak against ou former HW champ JoJo Kush.

The main event is a fight for the WW number #1 contender spot between the 2 fierce grapplers Dexter Leigertwood vs Miron Karoa.

So let’s tune in, first of course the basic stuff: this event is going to take place in the Hard Knocks (3000) on 24 May 2014.

If you have something to say to your opponent (smack talk), feel free to post something in the LFC Thread: http://www.mmatycoon.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42026

Don’t forget to check the Island Bet, if you want to bet on your favourite fighter

Link: http://mmatycoon.com/bookmakerpublic.php?bid=8162

Welterweight: Dexter Leigertwood (7-2-0) vs Miron Karoa (9-2-0)

This will be our main event for the evening, I call it the battle of the grapplers. Leigertwood is a very good fighter, he has all round skills except that he has a brown belt in BJJ. When he defeated Gyu he showed everyone what he can do and that he’s ready for a title shot, but not that fast. Karoa is withouth a doubt one of the best grapplers of the Island. He has also a Brown belt in BJJ and strong wrestling. Both guys have an extensive record in LFC (L: 5-1, K: 4-2). Karoa is on a 3 fight winning streak against the top of the LFC WW division and Leigertwood the same. Leigertwood can make use of his stand-up skills to stun Karoa with well timed strikes and then finish him with a clean tap out. Karoa will just try to take him down and do the job. It can get really close between these toppers.

My Prediction: Karoa wins by Submission or Leigertwood by Submission or KO (I can’t really decide)

Middleweight Championship: Samuel Berzins (8-1-0) vs Bj Penncil (10-2-0)

Our only title fight of the evening between the almost unbeatable Berzin and the fierce grappler Penncil. Berzins is officially the best P4P of the Island (even better than Crusoe), he wrote history by getting 2 belts around his waist, but now he has 3 belts around his waist. Penncil proved himself worthy as a contender for the MW belt when he defeated almost every strong MW fighter in the LFC division. He is a strong grappler with a brown belt in BJJ and proficient wrestling. Berzins is one of the most destructive fighters I have ever seen in a clinch, when he has you in his clinch you better start praying (J). This time I just don’t see Penncil win this one. Berzins has wins over numerous grapplers (Shaw, Leigertwood and Karoa). If Penncil can take him down it will be bed time for Berzins, but that’s just not going to happen.

My Prediction: Berzins wins by TKO and retains the belt.

Heavyweight: Numero Deux (6-3-0) vs Ray Force (9-2-0)

Our first HW clash of this evening between 2 Heavyweight giants. Deux is a wonderful boxer who finished every of his opponents with hard punches. He’s currently on a 3 fight winning streak, he has also an extensive record with LFC (6-2). Force is also a guy with crazy KO power, he does like to score the clean one shot KO’s (7 KO wins). He’s an experienced fighter (11 fights in total). He’s still fairly new to LFC, because he had another contract with Chaos, where he was the former HW champ. Deux has the better boxing, but Force on the other hand has better Muay Thai and wrestling. I am really excited about the outcome of this fight. I am pretty sure that they won’t need judges for this fight.

My Prediction: Deux wins by (T)KO

Welterweight: Phat Funk (7-0-0) vs Ben Askren (8-3-0)

A much anticipating bout between the undefeated Funk and the Olympic wrestler Askren. Funk is one of the best KO artists of the LFC (7 (T)KO wins), he’s also a fast finisher (6 of 7 wins in the 1st round). Askren is an excellent wrestler with strong GnP, he has some troubles with winning his fights (3-3 in last meetings). Submissions and strong clinch fighters are his nightmares. Funk has a lot of potential of being a WW champ, he he’s impressed by Berzins accomplishments, but still he thinks his clinch game would be fatal for Berzins. Askren is not fully recovered of his last fight (lost against Karoa), so I think Funk could walk out of the cage with a stoppage victory.

My prediction: Funk wins by (T)KO

Other Fights:

Heavyweight: Rocky Drago vs JoJo Kush

Prediction: Drago wins by TKO

Lightweight: Eino Juutilainen vs Bloody Blood

Prediction: Blood wins by Submission

Featherweight: Blagojevic Batakovic vs James Briggs

Prediction: Briggs wins by TKO

Featherweight: Johny Rico vs Milan Zitska

Prediction: Zitska wins by (T)KO

Middleweight: Alexander Jo vs Trevor Fisher

Prediction: Jo wins by Decision (Split)

Light Heavyweight: DeAndre Smith vs Kurko Tyrma

Prediction: Smith wins by (T)KO

LFC 32 Berzins vs Dexter Preview

Hi guys get ready for the next battle, as you know your favourite writer is taking his exam this month so I will try to make good preview as he always do, I hope he will pass them correctly. Now it's time to make noise, we have nothing less than 3 title fights tonight, The powerful Berzins will defend for the first time his 170 belt against the former champion Dexter Leigertwood, In the 265 division The champ Marco Bulher will face the WOSCF Champion Uncle Bob. And a huge superfight between the unstopable young prospect Phat Funk versus and other WW tenor Miron Karoa.

The event is going to take place in the Hard Knocks (3000) on June 04 2014.

If you have something to say to your opponent (smack talk), feel free to post something in the LFC Thread: http://www.mmatycoon...showtopic=42026

Main Event : Samuel Berzins (9-1-0) vs Dexter Leigertwood (8-2-0)

This is a rematch for the title, Berzins won his first belt against Leigertwood who is determined to take it back. We all know the power and skills of Berzins he is the most dangerous fighter on the Islande currently number one P4P he finished all his wins by nasty knockout, Leigertwood had been under hestimated often during his career and his only loss in LFC in 7 fights was against Berzins, this fight is personal for him. Anyway we saw Berzins against toughest wrestling who wouldn't be able to take him down but Dexter might have the boxing to find the right timing to do it, we will have the answer the 4th.

My prediction : Berzins by KO and Still 170 LFC Champion

Co-Main Event : Marco Bulher vs Uncle Bob

After the transfert of a lot of WOCFS Fighters to the LFC it's time to put face to face 2 heavyweight champion. Marco Bulher is on a 7 wins streak and defeat many kind of fighters he won all his fight by KO or TKO in the first round since his losse and wins his #10 P4P rank on the Island. Uncle bob is coming from Warrior he is undefeated and he already beat great Striker like Matt Fondelier or Ralph Soto he definitly has the finish this fight quickly. If he reach his way to the ground the fight will be over but I think it would be hard for Bob to take him down.

My prediction; Bulher by KO ( But it could go either way)

Welterweight : Phat Funk vs Miron Karoa

An other ww fight to determine the n°1 contender of the weight class, Phat Funk is a young prospect and maybe the Nastyest fighter of the LFC, he knocked out all his opponent and many of them had bean injured after the fight, in an other side Karoa is a very dangerous grappler 9 wins 9 submissions, you already got it, this is a real grappler vs striker fight. Karoa just lost over the main event fighter and try to have his way back to the title he already fought one of the best fighter of the division, Funk just came to the Top and definitly have the skill to win his title shot against the 170 Champ.

My Prediction: Funk By KO

Bantamweight: Rud Gullit vs Benoit Bizima

Rud Gullit was the former AFL champ, he came to the LFC when we opened the weight division and he outclass Eduardo Sanchez in the first round by a huge Knockout and he will defend his title for the first time. Benoit Bizima has an other path, he climb step by step to have the chance to change his life and become the LFC BW champion. This 2 guys are build in the same ways they have the same strengh and the same weakness and they both finish all their wins by knockout. I think this fight could be the fight of the night, both of this guys are great warrior, this promise to be electric.

My Prediction: A Draw (hard to decide)

Other fights:

Youba Boulwiha vs Christopher Rios

Blagojevic Batakovic vs Milan Zitska

Bloody Blood vs Jeremy Rounikki

Trevor Fisher vs Dirk Walters

Ben Askren vs Joe Moe

Kurko Tyrma vs Guy Cochrane

Samuel "The Title Wave" Berzins

MMATnews.com was lucky enough to sit down with Samuel "The Title Wave" Berzins for a Q&A

How did you get your start in MMA?

I wrestled my whole life. I started my senior year in college, My Father Michael Berzins actually coached me. He came up and helped me and when it was over, I was training for the freestyle Olympic team and he told me to meet him at an address. It happened to be the Island Premium CT gym which is a known breeding grounds for champions. I didn’t know any of the people that went there but I saw Anthony Pettis jumping off the cage making a video and his little brother doing spinning kicks, Erik Koch and his manager, and just, like, all these guys. I said, “What am I doing here? I’m here to wrestle, they in here bangin!” And my Father Michael said, “Welcome to your new sport, I just wanted you to try it out today and see how you like it." So I got in there and done what I was told and by the end of my first session, I could tell people in the gym were impressed with my athleticism and determination. Right from then, I knew I enjoyed striking and was hungry to get better at it..

Tell us about your first fight...

Well, it was actually March 11th of 2014. It was supposed to be a pro fight but the guy I was supposed to fight didn’t have any of his bloodwork in and they didn’t have a backup. And they were like “Ohh, there's an amateur guy here and you haven’t fought amateur yet, so you can technically fight him.” So I go in against this guy and I’m nervous. My nerves are jittering, this guy was 155, 5-foot-9, and I was like “Aww man, this is a toough dude.” But my coach told me to just do what I do, one, two, takedown.

So right after the whistle, I went in there bounced around about 15 seconds, and threw the one, two, he swings and I shoot a blast double, pick him up, and it just so happen Matt Hughes was there, so I did the famous Matt-Hughes-run-back-to-the-center-and-slam-him, and he was out. I sat up and started punching him some more, looking at the ref, and he stopped it at 3:29 in the first round, my first pro fight and it was over. From there they were like “You gon’ be good, you goin' pro in the next one!” And that’s been it.

How would you describe your fighting style?

I’m a mixed martial artist, man. I can do it all. Like I said, I started with Duke, so I learned the kicks and punches. I boxed a little bit through college. I boxed to get my footwork right for wrestling and everything clicked. So I box if I have to, but if I have to, I can depend on my wrestling, I was a national NCAA finalist wrestler, I can do a little jits here and there. I mean, I’ve got everything and I don’t like to tell myself I’m one fighter. If I go in with the mindset I’m a wrestler, I will go in there and stray from my hands and try to wrestle. If I go in there as a boxer, I’ll miss my takedowns. So I go in there, in my mind, as a mixed martial artist.

How has your family influenced your decision to fight?

Coming from my family, it was tight but it was strict. I have 4 other brothers that are successful fighters but my father and mother were both big Christian believers so we had to do everything right by the bible. My father was a hard worker. At 20 years old he had a family, a home, a wife, a boxing career and everything. So, my whole life it was always instilled in me that hard work is going to outwork anything. It’s not what you know but who you know and what you do.

He always taught me to do things 150 percent or don’t do them at all. Even with training, people say I’m a workaholic, but that’s the way my father made me. Yes, practice was two hours and we did our practice here, but when it was over, it’s time for Samuel to get something extra. You have to give that 50 percent extra when everybody isn’t and that’s why I am where I am now. I mean, I just started fighting six months ago and some of these guys started years ago.

On his older brother Daniel Berzins...

My older brother Daniel was born three months premature and his thing was “I’ll never stop, I’ll never quit with anything I’m doing.” And now you see him, and he’s 6’1, 185 pounds, a big dude. My whole life he was always at my wrestling matches, telling me, “Who is this guy? You're Samuel Berzins, you gon’ whip this dude.” And its been that way in my head, I just think about stuff my father and my brother told me, and my mother always saying, “I want you doing the right thing, no matter what. Even if a bank is empty and you can steal all the money, don’t do it because its wrong.” Put all three things together, my mother, my father, and my brother, and everything for me is just so easy. I can train with a smile on my face and know its not a stress, I’m not doing a job, I’m having fun. On the other hand, his career has been in my shadow so far and he's proven to be just as good, if not better than me by beating some of the most challenging fighters that I've fought in my career.

What are you going to miss the most about The Island experience?

Not having to do nothing but train and fight, I mean, you’re on the island for six months with no responsibilities but training. You don’t have to think about 'man, is my car gonna die on me today? Do I gotta go get gas? Do I need groceries? Do I have to be at work right now?' It’s nothing but training and fighting. Training two times a day, fight when they call your name, and make Metra M'bole happy.

What's your plans for after the end of season tournament?

I'm currently in negotiations with Metra M'bole in extending my contract to five fights, but only if the money is there.

I don't want to sound like a Shamrock, Tito or a Rampage when I say this. But I feel that I have been underpaid for quite a while now and believe it's time to have my dues paid.
