Troubled mixed martial artist DeAngelo Kenner has converted to Islam. In a recent public statement released through video from the city of Medina, Kenner expressed his feelings regarding the change. DeAngelo also mentioned that he is in the process of changing his name to Amir Zubair. He is currently in Medina, a historical Islamic city, where it is said that Muhammad, the Islamic prophet was buried and it is considered the 2nd most holiest city for Muslims after Makkah. A source close to DeAngelo revealed that he would be a practicing Sunni Muslim.

Like many young black mixed martial artists of our time, Kenner was raised in a poor-background labour family in Bronx, New York. His father went missing after DeAngelo's 7th birthday, and was never found as of today. DeAngelo, alongside seven siblings was raised for the remainder of his childhood by his uncle Jamal and his mother. Even at the early age of 11 he was on the streets fending for himself. At 191cm and 220 pounds, he was a very intimidating figure. He was often escorted to the police station as he was caught stealing, robbing or assaulting individuals.

In May 1989 he was involved in a street-fighting ring arrest, where he was sentenced to 4 years in prison for organising and participating in illegal warehouse street-fighting tournaments. Upon arrival in prison, he immediately fit in and joined the prison boxing community, where he was the undisputed prison fighting champion, winning and defending the title 7 times. Seeing as he was very talented, he was released on good behaviour two years in and was allowed to continue his fighting career.

In the following years of his career, he was signed by Masato Mizuhashi (deceased), who managed him for five consecutive fights, four of which he won by knockout. Following Mizuhashi's sudden death, Kenner signed with legendary manager Soyster-Eighty Nine, where he reached the top of the heavyweight division, reaching a p4p rank of 35. Notable fighters he has fought include Devin Styles, Brick Tires and Nahka Vitonen. Upon his latest defeat, he signed with talented manager LowKey, who promised the resurgence of Kenner's career.

The conversion to Islam was fairly surprising to LowKey himself, who answered our queries by saying that he will support whatever is best for his fighter, and if becoming a Muslim makes him perform better, then so be it.

Kenner (soon to be Zubair) said that the purpose of this change was to find inner peace and do good in his community. He is facing Simo Salakka on the 30th of August in Helsinki as part of the Claymore Elite Combat organisation.

ESPN The Magazine has several questions:

Is the fighter planning on fighting during Ramadan?

Are there any plans to join Jihad on infidels in the near, or not-so-near future?

DeAngelo Kenner:

I will never fight during the blessed month of Ramadan.

I do not support Islamic wars and I am especially against ISIS and its actions in Iraq and Syria. The teachings of Islam are peaceful, war and violence are not part of Islam and will never be.
