Destin: Ronnie – how does it feel to have such a history of dominance over your division? Igor, how do you feel about fighting a champion of Ronnie’s caliber? Bass: Well, it's great to be on top, that's for damned sure! Great to be here again. I haven't had a long run as champion, but was able to climb back to the top. So, I guess you can call it dominance, just never thought of it that way. I kind of like the sound of it Destin! Igor: Yes, we fought before in the original sucker punch tournament when I was the big favorite. Unfortunately for me, Ronnie got the big win there and I was stopped. It's great to get the chance to reverse that result. We’re a very good match up Destin: Ronnie “Dominance” Bass – rolls off the tongue pretty good huh!? Igor, it seems like you don’t care about Ronnie’s high hype and that you’re just excited to reverse the result of the prequal to this fight from early in your careers. It’s great to have two fighters of your caliber in the room together with us. Let’s jump right into it. Our fans are all wondering, where the hell did Landon come from?? It seems like yesterday nobody knew his name - but then he came in and shook up the entire division by winning 3 fights straight and taking the 185lb belt. What's your secret Landon? Sean, does it bother you that he got a title shot so much sooner in his career than you? McGuire: I come from a good team and have really well-rounded skills and pick up things very fast in training. Add that to my granite chin and my power and I am a threat to anyone who steps into the cage with me. Smith is going to learn that the hard way. He let his manager talk him into a fight that he is not ready for. Smith: Man, this dude just had matchmaking on his side. That's all it is, really. When you get a shot a Wandy and make the most of it, that's all it takes. This guy basically walks in, beats a scrub, then somehow beats Machado, then beats another scrub, and now he’s here. Matchmaking at its finest. Destin: Sounds like Landon is taking the humble approach of thanking his team, and Sean doesn’t think he’s hot shit and is really just lucky to be here. For both of you guys, this is your first time fighting an undefeated opponent – Are you worried that the man you face tonight will be a tier above your past opponents? Smith: I'm not worried about what tier he is. I'm worried about executing my game plan. If he beats me, he is legit, but if not, he'll never get another run at the Championship. Maybe he should be worried about what tier I am on!! McGuire: Haha, nice joke Sean. I don't worry about anyone I fight. Like Sean said, I know what I can do, now I just have to go and do it. Smith is tough; no way you go 6-0 and not be tough. Anything can happen in a fight. It just takes one lucky shot and even the underdog can pull out a win, but that is what it will take for Smith to win - for me to make a mistake and get caught. He cannot beat me; I will only lose if I make a mistake. Destin: Wow, you guys are both incredibly confident! It’s really unfortunate that one of you will have to lose your undefeated record tonight. What’s one thing that you guys respect about each other’s game? McGuire: I respect that he has some good striking, and only been to a decision once. Not all fighters have toughness, but Sean has a little. Smith: I’m plenty tough. I respect that Landon has the guts to step in a cage with me! But his game ain't been proven. He hasn't been tested on the feet. I haven't been tested on the ground. We'll see what's what real soon. Destin: Oof, tough talk from Sean. You two have both seen fantastic success so far in your careers. Destin: ZaDarius – It's rare that fighters earn rematches here for a belt, but you've done just that! ZaDarius - Since fighting Thoth over a year ago, he has gone on to win 3 fights straight. It's starting to seem to our fans that he's invincible. Are you excited that you may be able to steal that from Thoth tonight? ZaDarius: Yea Destin, I'm very excited to fight for the belt again, and to fight a great fighter like Thoth – and show what i can do. Destin: Nice. We’ll see what you’ve got tonight. Thoth, after defending your belt so many times, does it start to feel easy? Almost like you're invincible? Thoth: Actually, it's quite the opposite. Each time I defend the title, the higher the stakes are raised. The target on my back steadily increases and the pressure to adapt to each opponent is prominent. However, being a champion is what every fighter wants to be and I'll do my absolute best to be a champion for as long as possible. Destin: It sounds like you have the mentality to maintain that belt for a long time coming. Complacency is the downfall of most champions. Here’s a question for both of you guys – The first time you guys fought, Thoth won in mere minutes by forcing ZaDarius to tap with an ugly Kimura. What’s going to make this a different fight than your first meeting? Thoth: ZaDarius has improved a great deal since our first clash. He has worked diligently to become a BJJ black belt, just as I have. Additionally, he has learned more about himself as a fighter and understands what he can and can't do at this point in his career. I, too, have learned more about myself and should this fight become a battle of wills on the ground, we'll see who wants it more. ZaDarius: Yea, In the first fight i did not respect his BJJ as i should have, so I have worked hard to make sure my ground game is up to par. But I have also worked all of my, game and the way that I attacked back then is different from how i do it now. I have more weapons for Thoth to worry about this time. Destin: It Sounds like you guys are both ready for some grappling, which is my favorite part of MMA! It’s like a human chess match. What do you guys respect about each other’s game? ZaDarius: Everything. Thoth is a great fighter and champ. He just seems to do everything right. He does not seem to be afraid to fight anywhere, and mixes it up very well. He’s very well rounded. Thoth: Aww, thanks brother. I appreciate those kind words. Destin, I respect ZaDariuses aggression, and determination to finish an opponent with ground-and-pound viciousness. In that cage, you simply can't be trepid, nor second-guess yourself. The moment you do, you'll find yourself in a world of trouble. Haden is very confident and that's a large reason why he's once again fighting me for the title. Destin: I’m impressed with how well you guys are able to speak about each other! Not every fighter can maintain humility like you guys. Anything else you have to say to each other? Thoth: Everyone sees how hard you've worked and respects the victories you've earned. Hey bud. For future reference, it is necessary for me to add/edit small bits of responses for the sake of congruency and flow before posting the spotlights. With that said, I just re-read our PMs. Here are the only 2 things that I edited or added to the spotlight that wasn't directly from your response. I changed your response, "Man, Konrad this is gonna be a war." to "Big talk for a challenger. This is gonna be a war buddy." I also fabricated your fighter saying "Yeah, good luck with that." when your opponent said he was going to take your belt. If that is such a big deal to you, then I recommend you don't show up to your future title fight spotlights. I apologize if you were expecting 100% verbatum instead of the 99% verbatum that is was in actuality. I assumed you would assume that, It required very slight editing in order to become a back and forth piece. On that note, Kfuhrer and LemmieInCoach, thanks for the kind words! In retrospect it was a little awkward to post it after the event when it's presented as a pre-event piece. I definitely won't make that mistake again. It's an absolute honor to be among the top 5 of this competitive and fast-rising organization. Like all warriors in this organization, the goal is to be the very best fighter and I know I have to train arduously and intelligently to give myself the best opportunity to achieve that goal. Destin: Thoth, you've proven yourself to be a real submission machine. Boris is also a brown belt in BJJ. Are you going to try to submit him like your last 4 victims, despite him holding the same belt as you? Well Boris has proven to be a dangerous opponent in any given circumstance. Boris: I'm not sure what i could say (laugh) Thoth is great all around fighter and I don't find him less dangerous on his feet than on the ground, neither i find myself less dangerous on the ground than on my feet. This is modern mma and I prepare for every situation, and I know my opponent do too. I certainly expect to find myself on the ground with Thoth at some moment and I'm sure in that moment all who wanted to present this fight like Thoth is seeking ground and Boris seaking to stand will see how wrong they were. Destin: Boris, If you win tonight, you very well could become a top ten fighter here at Sucker Punch. Being the highest ranked fighter in the entire organization, do you feel any pressure coming into this fight? Machado: It’s good to be the king Destin. Gotta enjoy that. Ainsworth: "hanks lad, happy to be at the top - it is an honour. To be honest wiv ya, I don't feel any pressure comin in to dis’ fight. The Wanderson fight was offered to several bobs in this division before it bounced to me, but they were chicken and dodged the fight. I am the bridesmaid, essentially. However, to be offered a shot at takin’ down a legend in the makin’ is one I cannot run from. It will be a dynamic test, a win/win situation, but na mate - no pressure. Destin: You guys are both coming into this fight undefeated. Wilfred 4-0, and Wanderson 7-0. What makes you guys think you’ll beat the undefeated Ainsworth: Wanderson is undefeated too? Oh. Who cares? Have you not noticed I am undefeated too? Just because he has a couple of extra early victories over easy bums means nuffin. Everyone is beatable, Wanderson is no different aye. He has holes, I plan to expose em, but make no mistake this will be a war of millimetres." Machado: Hah, this guy's confidence is funny. Machado: Maybe Donkey will pull some other undefeated fighter out of his hat, or a second belt... or maybe he will just find Hare in there. Regardless I'm taking this org to new levels, maybe a superfight against one of the big ones soon? Guess the rules could be an issue as we are not that picky on banned techniques around here. Haven't really discussed that, Mac keeps telling me to focus on my next fight first. Destin: Cheap shots are definitely a concern here. You’ve always got to be on guard. Valery, If you were to become our 185 champion tonight, who would you like to fight next in defence of the belt? Ainsworth: Well that’s a tricky question now ain't it. Cause’ it appears several losers in this weight class like to hide from challenges and duck those they think they can't beat. But, as a champion, you should bang on wif’ anyone that earns a shot right? So.. When I hold that belt up above my head tonight, line em all up. Ie'll knock em down one after another. Destin: I know for a fact that Hare appreciates your willingness to fight anybody he throws your way! That’s the mark of a true fighter. How do you guys predict this fight will end? Machado: You mean, if they will call it a KO or a TKO? How would I know? I can tell you the “Out” part will be there. Opponent out is how I end my fights. Hear that Wilfred? You’re going to be out. My name is Destin, and I’m your host. Tonight at SPPS 17, we have TWO title fights on our card! In our Co-Main Event tonight, Valery Bokov (4-2) is challenging Frankie Logan (5-1) for the 155lb belt. Then for our Main Event of the evening, Wilfred Ainsworth is challenging Wanderson Machado for the 185lb belt - and his “highest ranked SPPS fighter” title! Without further ado, please welcome Frankie and Valery to this press conference! *Applause from the crowd* Destin: Hey guys. Thanks for showing up tonight. Our fans are excited for your title fight tonight, and to hear what you have to say about it in this press conference. Frankie; congrats on defending the 155lb belt in your last fight! They say you aren't a true champion until you've defended your title, and you did that in your last bout. Our fans are all expecting you to win tonight and remain champion. Do you feel any pressure when expectations for you are so high? Logan: Well Destin, I have always said that winning a title is only the start. Staying there is what is hard. There are Sucker Punch champions that haven't even fought yet; I am well trained, I love to fight and anyone who gets in the cage with me is in for a very difficult fight. I am always ready and focused on what is needed. Destin: It sounds like you’re ready to go tonight. Valery; congrats making your way to the 155lb championship here at Sucker Punch. Our fans are all expecting you to lose this fight. What do you have to say to your doubters and critics? Bokov: I have nothing to say to them. Absolutely nothing. In my country, words don't mean anything apart from actions. Their expectations only put pressure on the champ. See how he dodged your question? You asked if he’s feeling pressure but he never answered that. He’s scared that he could lose his belt tonight. Destin: Wow! Well, Frankie has a stellar wrestling background of 4-1 in TWGC, while you went 0-1 in the same competition. Ironically, Frankie hasn’t won by submission to this date, while 3 of your opponent's wins are by Sub. Why do you think this is? Bokov: Awe man, I was so inexperienced back when I lost that grappling match. Since that day, I grapple with circus bear on daily basis. Russian Sambo rules, our bears are very well versed in this discipline. Don’t worry about my grappling ability. Destin: Your thoughts Frankie? Logan: My roots are in Muay Thai, but I needed to get my grappling game stronger for TWGC. I worked hard on my grappling and went from a white belt to a brown, winning my division. I prefer to stand and bang, honestly, the fans love it too. But make no mistake, when my career is over there will be plenty of submission wins on my record. I am a MMA fighter and I am happy to fight whatever fight I need to, and I’ll fight wherever this russian guy wants because I can beat him anywhere. Destin: The only other fighter I’ve heard wrestle with bears is Khabib Nurmagomedov. It doesn’t concern you to hear that Valery trains like the legend himself? Logan: Oh come on. Where’s the proof? I call bullshit. Bokov: Come to mother Russia then and I will show you how to fight bear. Maybe then you will get your black belt. Logan: Tell you what, if you beat me tonight I’ll book a flight to Moscow and I’ll watch you get mauled by a bear. Deal? Bokov: Only you will be mauled tonight. I AM bear, and you are dinner. Your belt will be desert. Destin: Alright guys, your title fight is the co-main event on tonight's card. Our highest ranked fighter, Wanderson Machado, stole the main event, where he will defend his 185lb belt. Do you feel disrespected at all that you weren't given your own main event; but instead, you're the Co-Main for a more popular fighter? Logan: This is a business and we all know the highest pop/hype match up gets the main event. I have no problem with that. Machado has earned his spot. The 185lb division is a little more evolved than 155lb at the moment so higher combined matchups are more likely. The great thing is with these 2 fight at the top of the card, it will likely be the biggest event in Sucker Punch history so far and that is good for everybody here. Destin: Valery? Bokov: I do not care about this. I am focused on fight tonight. Ask me question about this fight, not that one. Destin: How do you guys think this fight will end? Logan: Bokov will likely try and force a grappling fight, I think he will tire in a 5 round fight and I will finish him with a late KO/TKO. Bokov: That’s big talk for stupid guy. Fight can go either way. Opponent is stupid but very dangerous. But I feel fairly confident I will beat him tonight. Logan: We’re going to find out real soon bud. Destin’s Title Fight Spotlight Sucker Punch Pro Series 10 - Heavyweight Edition Featuring: ZaDarius Haden + Thoth Chontamenti Hello folks, and welcome to the first ever rendition of our title fight interview series here at Sucker Punch! My name is Destin, and I'll be the host of this new series. We're going to be interviewing each and every fighter of ours who is due to fight for a title from here on out. It's the least we can do for our top dogs, and I’m excited to be here for it! Tonight at SPPS 10, we have our current Heavyweight champion, Thoth Chontamenti (4-1) and his challenger, ZaDarius Haden (5-0). Destin: Thoth, first and foremost, congrats on becoming the division's first ever 265 lb champion! Coming into this bout, you're on a 4-fight winning streak; however, only 1 of your opponents even holds a positive record. It seems to us like this is your first real test. What do you think about our apprehension? Thoth: Destin, You're absolutely correct about the fighters whom I've faced thus far. On one hand, I can certainly see the trepidation my fans may have. On the other hand, it's not my fault who the opponents have been. I don't make such decisions. I merely prepare as thoroughly and as professionally as possible at all times because I'm fully aware that at any given moment, especially in this division, all it takes is one mistake to end my night. Destin: You're right. In this sport, one mistake can cause even the best to lose. Zadarius, first off, congrats on your undefeated 5-0 record, and making it to the 265 lb title fight! Coming into this fight, you're the fan favorite to win, due to your undefeated record, and the tougher competition you've faced. Do you feel any extra pressure for this fight because you're expected to win? ZaDarius: Nah man. No added pressure for me. I always feel that I should win my fights Destin: It’s good that you can treat this like any other fight, and avoid getting nervous. Thoth, after 5 professional fights, you've literally only thrown 13 strikes in your MMA career. Do you plan to continue using your jujitsu as a tactic, or will you throw some strikes at ZaDarius? Thoth: Well, ZaDarius is obviously skilled and steps into this battle with an unblemished record. Kudos ZaDarius. There's no doubt he's earned this opportunity and I fully expect him to step up big time! I've only thrown a whopping 13 strikes because, thus far, 1 only 13 strikes have been necessary to get me this belt. It's no secret I prefer to make fighters lament in pain and frustration as they submit, much to their chagrin, but that's the name of the game. ZaDarius has very good boxing ability and I will throw more strikes because it will be necessary. We’ll see how the fight goes, and we’ll find out how much I care to strike. Destin: Well said Thoth. We're excited to see your striking skills, if if comes to that tonight. Zadarius - in your career so far, we've observed your usual strategy is to smother opponents with your fantastic ground and pound. Thoth will be by far the best grappler you've fought thus far. Are you worried about getting submitted on the ground? Will this change your gameplan at all? ZaDarius: Nah, man. You will see on fight night what plan I have. Destin: What’s up with you buddy? For somebody who’s undefeated you sure are quiet. ZaDarius: Talk is cheap bud. I let me fists do the talking for me. Destin: How do you guys expect this fight to end? Thoth: I predict that I will emerge victorious by decision, because I'm fully aware ZaDarius is an outstanding grappler and likes to~ ZaDarius: Enough yapping. I’m going to finish you before the 2nd round is over. Thoth: … uh, ok, bud. I like your confidence. Just know that I’m going to love giving you your first loss and wiping that cocky attitude away. I had more praise for you, but you know what... I'm not overly concerned. I believe in my defense as well as adapt to any situation. This battle will be determined by will and desire. Hey all, I opened a gym a few weeks ago in Tokyo, and we're looking for fighters. The gym is and will be kept in top shape, and has lots of elite coaches (and we're adding more as our gym grows).
