Inside the cage with Gordon Penn

Gordon Penn: I'd hardly call it flawless, I didn't land a single strike and missed a couple of submissions.

Slo Moegan: Well I'm sure with a performance like tonight though uncle BJ has to be proud.

Gordon Penn: I'm sure that's what he will tell me, but I feel like let Penn name down tonight. Uncle BJ had laser accuracy with his jabs and his bjj was so good he would have landed that first submission.

Slo Moegan: So would it be safe to safe you have a lot to live up to?

HIGHLAND CLOTHING'S FIRST SPONSORSHIP

It's no secret that Highland has a keen interest in The Island, having started there ourselves and positioning our future in giving a home to all future Island fighters. So this season, we wanted to do something special with our sponsorships.

We are opening up the cheque books and offering big money sponsorships to fighters who show excellent promise, officially stating that the fighter is a Highland endorsed fighter who we can see ourselves working with for many years in the future if all goes well.

Leslie possesses some of the scariest power amongst the Lightweights, having finished all 3 of his fighters in the very first round. After two instant finishes in the regional circuit, Lesley signed for Thibodeaux's Rogues and finished his TR debut with an incredible superman punch which would definitely have won KOTN if Dakota pulled his finger out and announced the winners.

Lesley is managed by Teyo Ken, a relatively new manager on scene who's already made a splash in the Highland ranks by picking up former Highland and two time IXF champion Dick Winters.

Scott Bandz

Congratulations to Scott Bandz for being named Highland's manager of the month for December. Scott went 5-0 during the month, including his fighter Ka Kashi making it to the Highland $6mil Tournament Quarter Finals. With 4 fighters in Highland now, Scott will be hopeful for many more accolades.

Scott Bandz has been awarded $150,000 for his achievement.

HIGHLAND FIGHTER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

It's the illustrious time of the year where we hand out awards for the accomplishments of our great fighters over the past 12 (11) months. It's been amazing year where Highland has went from strength to strength, going from an Island organisation in selling just 100 tickets, to a top 4 organisation in the world with 90,000 fans packing out a Wombley PPV. Without the success and commitment of our great fighters, we'd never have made it to this stage, so I'll kick off by saying a sincere thank you to each and every on of you who made our first year great.

Enough of the sappy shit, it's time for the awards.

Remi Chavaski (16-3) - Third Place (Bronze Medal)

Up against stiff competition from Lucas Barbosa and Kazuo Takashi for the bronze medal, Remi Chavaski pulled ahead on the merit of his three, yes, three weight championships. Remi's island career started off managed by Theksit Ruengruong, one of the most accomplished MMA managers today. After a disappointing end to his Island tournament, the reigning Featherweight Champion joined Blaze King's stable of fighters. He would defend his FW title on two more occasions, but more impressively Remi would add the Bantamweight and Lightweight titles to his collection. As of writing this, Remi is the reigning FW and LW champion, having vacated his BW title to continue fighting at higher weights. Remi is one of the most colourful characters in Highland, consistently involved in spats with fighters, managers and even writers. This character helped build the first and to date only BMF title match in Highland history, when Remi clashed with Noel Diaz for the brand new belt.

 

Torhte Finlayson (22-2) - Second Place (Silver Medal)

Gingy Bear is has been terrifying the 205 division with his insane striking prowess, finishing all 22 of his victories inside the distance. His run to kick off his career is what led him to this award, going on an incredible 19-0 winning streak which saw him capture the ColMMA title, merge it with the Highland title, and then amass 10 straight defences of the belt. To add to this, Torhte managed to win the end of season Island tournament, an incredible feat which has stumbled many dominant Island fighters. Torhte has found a way to win fights he's behind in, and he's found a way to KO even the most granite chinned goes. A bonafied pioneer of Highland who always helped raise us to the next level, it's an honour to give this award to Invertrossachs assassin ahead of his January 7th title opportunity. Congratulations to Torhte and his manager Action Jackson on all of their accomplishments.

 

Noel Diaz (20-1) - First Place (Gold Medal)

There is little surprise here. Noel Diaz took Highland and the entire MMA world by storm with his vocal pre-fight tirades, his all out wars and his ability to always back up what he says. Noel Diaz started out as a Bantamweight in Highland, eventually giving up the title so that his team mate Kazuo could have a shot. Since then, Noel has captured the Featherweight, Lightweight and Welterweight Championships. FOUR weight champion. And to add to this? Noel is the reigning Highland BMF Champion, defeating bronze medallist Remi Chavaski for the honours. Some fighters jump around weight classes for a quick route to accolades like this, but Noel defended his BW title once, FW title 3 times and his LW title 6 times. Although he was unable to win the end of season Island tournament, he immediately avenged the loss with a comfortable title defence. Even in fights where it's looking ropy, Noel has found a way to come back and pick up the win. Stockton's own has beat fighters on the feet, in the clinch and on the ground, and ahead of his first attempt to defend his Welterweight title, it was really a no brainer that Noel Diaz would bring his Highland Hall of Fame manager Arcalimon The Coach a nice piece of hardware for their illustrious collection.

One again it's own. Friday night's card is main evented by Kazuo Takashi (21-2), the former Bantamweight king who had 8 Highland defences in addition to an IXF title for good measure. He's taking on the controversial, outspoken, character of the year nominee Remi Chavaski, or should I say CHAMPaski. Remi is a triple weight champion in Highland. Yes, triple. After capturing the Featherweight strap and making 3 defences of it, he dropped to BW to fight Brett Shoenfeld, winning the 135lbs title in the process. The interesting bit? It was Brett who finally dethroned Kazuo. A fourth FW defence saw him head into that unforgettable BMF superfight with Noel Diaz, before he added the LW title to his collection with a decision victory of Ed Green. Now in a position to pick which weight to fight at based on the challengers, Remi saw the opportunity to exact revenge on Arcalimon Top Team following the aforementioned loss to Noel Diaz.

We don't have just one title fight on the cards though. Speaking of Brett Shoenfeld, Brett has been a constant fixture in the  Bantamweight division and captured his BW title back following it's vacation from Valerio Falto in November. After a successful defence against Carlos Marcos, Brett has a tough test on his hands in Enzo Williams. Not much is known about how Enzo Williams is now a Bantamweight. Was it COVID? Was it a brand new radical diet? We're unsure. But the former Welterweight and Middleweight agreed to this fight and got the dirt sheets buzzing, and he turned up on the scales looking like a shell of his former self. None the less, with 11 submissions to his name we know Enzo is a threat. Will BW be the division where he finally breaks out?

Richard "The Magician" Hall (4-0)

The Magician makes it 4 straight with a first round armbar over Mike Schultz. It's believed this fight was intended to be a title fight, but there were some technical issues behind the scenes at Vandal that prevented them from getting the title together in time. 

None the less, Richard Hall has signed on to fight for the title just one week after, 5 days from now, when he fights CT Johnson for the Vandal Fighting Club Featherweight Championship.

Good luck to Richard on his quest to become the first Highland Clothing sponsored fighter to become champion.

Alex Munhoz (4-0) & Robbie Hall (2-0)

We are delighted to announce that two new fighters have been added to the Highland Clothing stable.

Alex Munhoz is a talented BJJ brown belt who's managed to submit 3 of his 4 opponents in under a minute. With 100% of his foes tapping on the mat, Munhoz is considered to be one of the biggest Welterweight threats in Thibodeaux's Rogues. Managed by Coach Steve, notable for Highland fame with former champions Ricky Thompson and Brett Shoenfeld, there's a very strong body of knowledge in Munhoz' camp and it's going to be exciting to see how me moves forward with this experience.

Robbie Hall, brother to the previously sponsored Richard Hall, joins us as the least experienced fighter in the Highland Clothing brand. Robbie has just 2 victories to date, however he has looked like a real superstar in each and his win over a fighter managed by the respected Kento King in his last outing shows Hall could be a real threat. Highland Hall of Fame Manager Arcalimon The Coach believes Robbie could go all the way, and we do too.

Munhoz is currently not attached to a fight, while Robbie Hall will challenge reigning champion Frankie Venegas for the Thibodeaux's Rogues Bantamweight Championship on January 30th.
