The 16 fighters have been training for over 3 months now and with one group stage fight under their belts we can start drawing some ideas about the skills and potential of the competitors. Some fighters have compiled some noticeable primary skill improvements in the last 3 months: Steffen Gunderson looks to have been working his boxing and now has remarkable boxing to accompany his wonderful wrestling; Viktor Soshnyanin started out as a pure boxer but as well as improving his boxing to exceptional he has also made significant improvement in his MT and wrestling; the greatest improvement primary wise looks to have come from Erich Beideman's fighter Taylor Bates who started out as a wrestler but has added significant boxing and MT skills. Funnily of the 3 mentioned fighters only one, Bates, managed to secure any points in the first round of fights. Everyone knows that this game is about much more than having impressive primaries and the other managers might have different approaches to training meaning there is still a huge amount of unknown about these fighters.

Group A was instantly talked about as potentially the hardest group to escape with a number of high ranked managers involved, including the winner of the first Project Fighter tournament Fasu Veijari. Stories were flying about and one fighter, Roy Pitbull, was being touted as a no-hoper due to what was considered a flawed build with his primary points being spread out more than the majority of the other fighters in the competition. Pitbull's skills have increased since then of course but still went into his first fight against Steffen Gunderson as a heavy underdog. The underdog often wins however and that was the case here as a good gameplan from Pitbull coupled with a slightly dubious one from Gunderson led to a shock 1st round TKO win for Pitbull. Pitbull's manager Soul Crew was delighted and he has now given himself an excellent chance to progress to the knockout stages. The other fight in the opening round was a titanic clash between two highly thought of managers defending champion Veijari and top 100 regular Sami Assisi. Their fighters Stasi and Soshnyanin went at it for three rounds in a very entertaining fight but in the end Stasi's more accurate striking coupled with his use of the clinch gave him a decision victory. Next time out Stasi will be looking to cement a place in the next round as he goes into the next fight as a favourite over Gunderson, whilst Soshnyanin faces an almost must win fight when he takes on Pitbull. Things to note from the tale of the tapes were good chins for Gunderson and Stasi as well as heavy hands for Pitbull. Predicting the outcome of this group is tough but it looks like Stasi will come out on top with Pitbull and Soshnyanin battling for that second qualification spot.

Group B features one of the early favourites to win the competition in the shape of Taylor Bates and the American made a dominating start to the competition against Royal Artillery where he demonstrated how effective an attacking clinch game can be on his way to a 2nd round TKO victory. Artillery has since dropped from the competition and been replaced by the next reserve available in the shape of Michael Lee. In the other fight in Group B the Icelander Tyr Garmr picked up two points with a solid decision against the undersized Cliff Harris. Bates and Garmr face off next with the winner likely to be guaranteed a spot in the next round with a fight in hand if they can secure a stoppage, Bates might look to use his clinch again and we are yet to see Garmr clinch in action. Harris and Lee both need to pick up the win when they face off or they face elimination. Lee has been called up at the last minute and we will need to wait til fight time whether that is advantageous to him or not. The most notable feature of the tale of the tapes in the first round would seem to be Bates' granite chin and when coupled with the fact he can end fights makes him a near certainty to progress to the knockout stages. Garmr is in the driving seat for the 2nd qualification spot and at the moment it is hard to look past him qualifying alongside Bates.

Group C could quite easily be described as the tightest of the 4 groups before the first fights with no one fighter standing out in their skillset but things look a little clearer after seeing the results. The early favourite, however, has to be Jason Bourne who has the backing of a top 100 manager and in his first fight looked super impressive in KOing Vic Pro in under a minute. In the other fight in the group, Dmitry Petrenko secured a razor thin split decision win over the Australian Magnus Greal in a fight where afterwards many cageside believed Greal had done enough to take the 2 points and now the striker must look to finish Vic Pro to gain a valuable 3 points to leave him in a good position to qualify going into the final group fights. Both Bourne and Petrenko go into their clash knowing a win would propel them into pole position to qualify. Bourne in particular knows another stoppage guarnatees him a spot in the knockout rounds. There wasn't much of note on the tale of the tapes for the fights but you can draw your own conclusions with Bourne ending a fight quickly, landing only two punches on Pro's chin. It looks likely that Bourne will progress as the winner of the group, whilst Petrenko's split decision victory over Greal could end up being super vital in the race to qualify.

Group D is a tough puzzle to work out at first glance with no fighter really standing out as things stand despite a comfortable win for Micah Magnum in his opening fight. Magnum is a weird build, he has absolutely zero stand-up skills and has been built purely to take opponents down and finish them there with strikes and submissions. It worked in his opening fight against Nathan Holden as despite dropping the first round he was able to secure an armbar with seconds of the 2nd round remaining to grab all 3 points. The other opening fight in Group D saw Extor Barnes use accurate striking and some clinch control on his way to a 30-27 decision win over his namesake Paddy Barnes. Extor Barnes will look to use similar tactics whilst avoiding the takedowns of Magnum in the second set of fights. If he can test Magnum's chin he could do enough to secure the 3 points. Similarly in the other fight Paddy Barnes will be looking to keep it standing against Holden to outbox his opponent whilst if it hits the ground that should be Holden's fight all night long. Magnum came up unlucky on the TofT drawing cuts easily which could be a hinderance against quality strikers, whilst both of the Barnes' drew good chins which are always beneficial. A surprise predicition perhaps but I wouldn't be too surprised to see both Barnes' qualify from the group with Magnum just missing out.

Group A

1. Roy Pitbull 6pts

2. Kimmo Stasi 4pts

3. Steffen Gunderson 0pts

4. Viktor Soshnyanin 0pts

Remaining Fights

Pitbull v. Stasi

Gunderson v. Soshnyanin

With one fight to go both Pitbull and Stasi have already qualified for the knockout phase, but both still have something to fight for with the group winner likely to have an easier fight in the next round. Gunderson and Soshnyanin are fighting for pride in the other fight.

Group B

1. Taylor Bates 6pts

2. Tyr Garmr 2pts

3. Cliff Harris 2pts

4. Michael Lee 0pts

Remaining Fights

Bates v. Harris

Garmr v. Lee

Bates, with two stoppage wins has secured his place in the next round and is guaranteed to win the group. Garmr is in pole position to come 2nd due to his win over Harris in the opening fights so thus he only has to match Harris' result against Lee to qualify. Harris needs to beat Bates and hope Garmr slips up against Lee. Michael Lee, a late replacement, can still qualify if he stops Garmr and Bates beats Harris.

Group C

1. Dmitry Petrenko 4pts

2. Jason Bourne 3pts

3. Magnus Greal 3pts

4. Vic Pro 0pts

Remaining Fights

Petrenko v. Pro

Bourne v. Greal

Petrenko leads the way in Group C and has qualified for the next round. He will win the group with any sort of win over Pro who has lost 2 from 2 and can't qualify. Bourne and Greal match off with both knowing the winner is guaranteed to progress with Petrenko.

Group D

1. Extor Barnes 5pts

2. Micah Magnum 3pts

3. Nathan Holden 2pts

4. Paddy Barnes 0pts

Remaining Fights

P.Barnes v. Micah Magnum

E.Barnes v. Nathan Holden

Extor Barnes has gathered 5 points from his 2 fights but bizarrely can still fail to qualify in a group where all 4 men have a chance to progress. A stoppage loss to Holden coupled with a Magnum stoppage win over Paddy Barnes would see Extor missing out. An unlikely scenario but not unimaginable.

Micah Magnum can even afford to drop a decision to Paddy Barnes and qualify as long as Extor Barnes wins against Holden.

Nathan Holden needs to win and hope that Magnum loses.

Paddy Barnes, despite having zero points thus far, can still qualify if he stops Magnum and Extor Barnes beats Holden. Not an unthinkable scenario.

Would the result of harris vs Garmr count if Harris wins? I mean, IF Harris wins he has beaten the guy who squashed Garmr, right? :(

Ties are split in the first instance by head to head record.

Glad Petrenko is doing well! Had two great fights so far. Physicals paid off against you, Cardiff. Good fight. Also, nice try, Gunnar :P Vic Pro is the next to fall to Petrenko!

  • 3 weeks later...

Group A

1. Kimmo Stasi 6pts

2. Roy Pitbull 6pts

3. Viktor Soshnyanin 3pts

4. Steffen Gunderson 0pts

Stasi and Pitbull tie on 6pts at the top of the group with Stasi declared the group winner due to his victory over Pitbull. Both men move onto the quarter finals.

Group B

1. Taylor Bates 9pts

2. Tyr Garmr 5pts

3. Cliff Harris 2pts

4. Michael Lee 0pts

Bates and Garmr qualify from Group B with Bates the group winner with 3 stoppage victories.

Group C

1. Dmitry Petrenko 6pts

2. Magnus Greal 6pts

3. Jason Bourne 3pts

4. Vic Pro 0pts

Petrenko and Greal progress from Group C, with Petrenko topping the group due to his split decision victory over Greal in his first fight.

Group D

1. Micah Magnum 6pts

2. Extor Barnes 5pts

3. Nathan Holden 4pts

Magnum tops the group and is joined in the quarters by Extor Barnes. Holden must be gutted that despite two wins, including one over Extor, he doesn't progress.
