MANILA—Floyd Mayweather Jr. has turned down a $65 million offer to fight pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Inquirer over the phone yesterday that the unprecedented offer was made by a Singapore group that handles special events and other projects for big casino complexes and other entities in the island state.

Arum said that Mayweather demanded $10 million even before he and the Singaporeans could discuss a possible Pacquiao fight.

“This guy (Mayweather Jr.) is totally out of his mind,” Arum said.

Arum said that the Singapore group flew to Los Angeles to negotiate. The Top Rank promoter added the group told him “they never experienced such craziness in their lives.”

Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz confirmed the meeting, saying: “Mayweather wanted the $10 million up front before he would event talk to them.”

“There are no excuses this time, nobody to blame,” said Koncz. “He just doesn’t want to fight Manny.

Where are you going to get $65 million? Even after tax and everything it would come down to $30 or 40 million and that’s a lot of money.”

I hope this fight would push through. I am sick of the debate about these two guys.

Arum said... That just makes it all irrelevant doesn't it? It's not just that Arum is Pacquiao's promoter, it's that he might be the most dishonest man on the planet.

If Mayweather wanted to fight they would have fought by now.

Floyd doesn't want to tarnish his record, who would want to.

The problem is, to be the greatest you have to beat the greatest.

Everyone loses, its part of life.

I'm on the fence as to who would win this when it

(n)ever happens

fuckin stupid, just fight already.

Maybe they relize once this fight happens, there will be no good fights left and boxing will be left to be thrown in the trash were it belongs.

65 million to sit there with big ass gloves playing patty cake for 12 rounds, while guys with real all around skill in mma are only making a max of 500k a fight, and thats VERY FEW fighters. Give me a break

You realize it takes just as much skill to do what they do with their hands correct. With an unbiased opinion, watch their angles, footwork, hand speed, etc. then compare it with an MMA fighter's hands. It's night and day the difference. Sure, MMA fighters understand the grappling and kicking aspect MUCH better, but what boxers can do is more than just "patty cake".

As for Arum, he'll do anything to make Floyd look worse and Manny look better. There are two sides to every story so I'll wait to hear what Floyd says. Still have heard numerous different things about Pac dodging/not dodging the drug testing and I want to hear more about that.

Yeah you shouldn't believe anything Arum says. Ever. If Arum says 60 million then it's probably 6 dollars. It is insane that the fight hasn't happened yet. It's insane that Mayweather passes on around 50 million by holding on to his drug tests and it's insane that Pacquiao passes on the same amount because he doesn't want to do it.

yes but when you only have to train one dimension your whole life then you should be better. And MMA Guys are better fighters then boxers, put them in a fight and the MMA guy wins.

I just think boxers are way too overpaid

honestly i'm starting to hope the fight never happens. it's not going to live up to expectations anyway, and as long as it doesn't get booked there will still be one potential relevant fight in the world of boxing.

hell, their promoters probably have some sort of deal in which they WON'T fight, just so they can bring it to the forefront every ~6 months in the hopes that it helps to keep people interested in boxing, while mma is rapidly becoming far more popular and boxing is rapidly losing ground. i mean let's face it, if/when they DO fight, it will likely be their last huge payday. in the meantime they can continue to take slightly lesser paydays while the hype from the potential matchup between them remains on the distant horizon.

boxing fans are aging. mma has a MUCH younger demographic, which means it's just going to continue to get larger audiences while boxing just continues to get smaller audiences. if these two guys are smart (financially), they won't fight until it's the last fight of their respective careers.

MMA fighters will get that kind revenue down the road, you have to remember this is still a relatively new sport when it comes to big PPVs and such. Boxing has just been around much longer. Give it time. You can already see how much the UFC has done for the sport. Now mini orgs have popped up all over.

But Mayweather is a bitch and would've lost his last fight had Ortiz not wanted to apologize 15 times.

1) will that fight even pull in as much money if mayweather happens to lose along the way somehow?

2) MMA is growing in a few countries, but boxing is still much bigger internationally. i think some of it may be in part to the grappling aspect...look at how hard it is for MMA to take off in the black and latino communities due to the "two guys rolling around on the ground" aspect of it. maybe the rest of the world isnt as homophobic as Americans but im not sure how much significant growth is really going on in other countries outside of Brazil/UK. Japan seems to be losing steam in regards to MMA.

3) if other countries that dont have a wrestling/grappling heritage dont learn to grapple, this may limit how involved their country gets in the MMA scene (at least in the US). im sure there are plenty of strikers out there from other countries but if they get to the UFC and get taken down/LnP'd and go 0-3, it probably wont be very helpful in cultivating new worldwide talent (for our market, anways...maybe they all go to One FC or something).

EDIT: forgot to add...boxing is a relatively cheap sport to start in. go look at all the gear required for MMA in the US, not to mention gym fees...

It's still apples and oranges. I bet you an NBA basketball player will beat a NFL football player at basketball every time. It's two different sports. Just because they're both "combat sports" still doesn't make them the same. And guys such as Floyd Mayweather will spend just as much time practicing in their training camps as a MMA fighter will in his. You make it sound like it's easy to box, but try hitting a professional boxer only being able to use your hands. While it's easy to say "they don't have to worry about kicks or grappling", they also don't have those things to bail them out when the boxing isn't working. Again, apples and oranges.

Ortiz wasn't landing anything against Mayweather that entire fight. Even boxing analysts believe that head butt was him getting frustrated and looking for a quick way out of the fight. If you can find me ANY evidence that says Ortiz was about win that fight, I'm all ears.

Put them in a gunfight with a soldier and they both die. I don't really see your point. Being overpaid counts for all top athletes in every big sport. I also don't think MMA fighters are ever going to earn as much as boxers. In MMA there's only one big promoter and it demands a lot more from it's fighters than a percentage from the revenue like in boxing. There's also no real competition for the UFC so there's no point in paying fighters more if they don't have an alternative anyway.

Boxing also has other qualities that MMA doesn't have. Boxing will always be considered more of a gentlemen's sport than MMA. It's not only the size of the fanbase that counts. Soccer is a lot more popular sport than golf, but Tiger Woods was the best payed "athlete" for ages. The fans in golf also consist of a much older demographic than MMA, but that doesn't mean anything. Old fans will die and young people will get older and replace the old fans. Boxing also has a lot wider base and it's easier to understand for non-fans than MMA is. A large portion of the casual MMA fan only likes the standup portion of the fight for that reason. They don't know what goes on when the fight goes to the ground.

I think it's going to take a while for dictators to pay large sums to get an MMA fight to their country. Boxing is having a weak period, but it won't die. It has too rich of a history, it's too much of a tradition.
