Erik
I think it's exceptionally hard to rate US Presidents -- different eras, different challenges. Lincoln was certainly the right man for his time. 3
gwad12345
Dunno why this thread is getting negs, especially Eric's post.. Lincoln and Washington would be my votes. A more interesting question is who do you think are the worst presidents of all time.

Erik
Best T.Roosevelt/FDR/JFK....Worst Obama. You seriously believe Obama is worse than 1. Richard Nixon, responsible for Watergate, the War on Drugs, and the Southern Strategy (which has done much to damage race relations in the US given virtually every Republican candidate for higher office since has used it). 2. Andrew Johnson, who opposed citizenship to freed slaves and generally made a mess of the reconstruction. 3. James Buchanan, who through complete failure to act basically let the civil war happen. 4. George W Bush, who got the country into two wars and failed to curtail (and arguably, helped cause) an enormous housing bubble that led to the current economic state of affairs. Obama hasn't had the capacity to make that big of a mess, honestly, with the exception of Obamacare (which is relatively minor in the long run) he hasn't done anything notable or interesting. 3

Guest
Anyone who thinks that either Bush or Obama is the worst president of all time must be historically illiterate. Or never taken a U.S. History class... The Civil War was caused because Lincoln's predecessor (James Buchanan) couldn't deal with the issue of slavery. I would say James Buchanan was the worst U.S. President of all time. In terms of the best, I'd say it was FDR. Roosevelt dealt with a world war and a devastating economic crisis that he helped lay the foundation that got our country out of it. Many of his programs are still in effect today in the U.S.
gwad12345
To be fair to Buchanan you could say the same thing about all of the presidents in the run up to the civil war.
Erik
There's an argument that the Civil War was inevitable in some respects, but Buchanan took it from likely to absolute certainty. Benghazi Are you a fucking idiot? Even if you consider Benghazi to be a result of ineptitude and then followed by an attempted cover up (the worst remotely logical interpretation), at the end of the day it was four dead people. The War on Drugs alone has done more damage by far. 2

Madness
Best would likely be FDR. Worst would be Harding, but Buchanan was absolutely terrible. You also have Jackson who basically committed genocide. That is something very hard to overlook.
KingEpicity
I would say FDR for best. Teddy for most interesting. As for worst it becomes a crap shoot after awhile but imo Andrew Jackson gets off way too easy by most. Buchanan and Harding were awful. gwad12345
I would probably say Harding and Jackson but it depends on what standards you use to judge them really. Harding was a terrible president because of his incompetence while Jackson was terrible because he was overly-competent in doing terrible things. Nixon has also gotta be near the top of the list for his flagrant disregard of the law.

The thing about FDR is if he'd only had two terms he might well be ranked one of the worst.
