Guest
i assume you are asking about custom skins? you dont realy need photoshop , you can get by with two free proggys paint.net and gimp , google them and download them they are free and not so burdend as photoshop. i started a clothing company four weeks ago http://www.mmatycoon.com/clothingpublic.php?cid=1968 in english , 1337 in london i had very little knowlage of these programs before hand , but now i can do a decent job take a look at what i done in four weeks , then lok at what i started with. vast diffrence. you will need both programs though , gimp is awsome for cutting out a fig. and paint is great for overlaying images. note on my clothing page i have animated tops i brought this knowlage with me bofore i started my company
Guest
How do you guys make the bodies? Do you draw them out? Do you trace and then color? Most of the 'cartoon' style bodies come from a game called WMMA2 , pre-rendered bodys , you can google it or go to the greydog forums ... some of the more realistic looking ones are just fighter bodys with over tones on them to make them blend with the heads. Skuzbukit
I looked into doing my own avatars but sheesh 3ds max or whatever would be needed for that level of quality is just too expensive to dabble with as a hobby.

Skuzbukit
I've used a couple of online programs to manipulate images but they are really limited, would be nice to have an inexpensive option with decent tools to faff around with and make some interesting t-shirt designs etc.
CelticStryder
Like Scottie mentioned… I’d give GIMP a shot. I use Photoshop personally but GIMP might be the closest open source alternate
Daudy
Paint.net is also a pretty decent free program with a world of plugins that make it better.
