Ironman Fight Club XXVI – New Blood Tournament Final

(25th November 2017 – King Theatre, Los Angeles)

Tonight's show marked the very biggest and best show in Ironman history so far and with it the crowning of it’s very first New Blood champion.

As this was almost two events in one, I’ll start with the finals of the New Blood Tournament.

New Blood Tournament - 3rd Place Fight

Jonathan “Money Shot” Davis vs. Xing “Rufus” Pugberg

After Pugberg’s utter destruction at the hand’s of Fay Gott in the semi-final there was a legit fear that tonight’s fight could have gone the same way given Davis’ record of knockout victories but it was back to business for Pugberg as he did what he has done so well throughout the tournament and that is to take his opponent down and get the submission victory.

The opening round began with a quick jab from Davis who then followed with a left, right combo that missed. Seizing his chance, Pugberg countered with a double leg into guard. From there Pugberg worked quickly and efficiently traversing to side control and then full mount and then into a beautiful arm bar submission that Davis was unable to stop.

Xing Pugberg defeats Jonathan Davis by Submission (Armbar) at 0:36 of Round 1.

Disappointment for Davis who started so well in the tournament winning both his opening round fights by first round KO’s and ending an even 2-2.

For his final standing in the tournament Davis is awarded 50k Prize Money

For Pugberg it was a great comeback after an horrific performance against Gott in the Semi-Finals and he will be very pleased with himself I’m sure to finish in 3rd.

For his final standing in the tournament Pugberg is awarded 50k Prize Money and 3 Months VIP

New Blood Tournament – Finale

“The Bully” Fay Gott vs. Micky Kirby

This was what it all came down too. Both fighters, undefeated throughout the tournament, fully prepared and ready to go. “The Bully” knew exactly what was coming. The only question left to answer was, could he stop it?

The answer on this occasion was yes.

The bell sounded for round one and instantly Gott closed the distance and moved into the clinch to neutralize Kirby’s shot. A shot inside opened up a cut on Kirby as the wrestler worked relentlessly to secure the takedown. Gott maintained his balance and landed thudding body shots and crisp hooks and uppercuts. Just after the minute mark the clinch attack started to take effect and Kirby looked dazed. Still trying desperately to take the fight to the floor, Gott was practically holding Kirby up as he maintained his aggressive clinch offensive.

Two minutes in, Gott lands a huge right hand that finally drops Kirby and “The Bully” follows him down into mount and finishes up with some strikes on the ground for good measure.

Fay Gott defeats Micky Kirby by TKO (Strikes) at 2:09 of Round 1

It was a truly remarkable run for Kirby who we hope won’t feel too down on himself especially considering that he was one of the younger fighters in the tournament. Coming in as an unfancied, overlooked afterthought he ended up being one of the tournament’s most impressive fighters.

For his final standing Micky Kirby is awarded 150k Prize Money and 6 Months VIP

As for his opponent ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the 1st New Blood Tournament and the NEW champion of the New Blood Division “The Bully” Fay Gott!

Gott had without question the most difficult route into the final and had to beat some early favorites to get here but he has come through the last rounds superbly, showing some true championship qualities.

Gott wins the belt as an older 19 year old and though doesn’t have very much time before he turns 20 and has to leave the division, he still has time to make one defense against an as yet unnamed challenger.

For his final standing in the tournament Gott is crowned New Blood Champion and is awarded 300k Prize Money and 1 Years VIP

A big thank you to all the managers involved who helped make it a very smooth, easy running tournament. I hope you all had as much fun as I did.

Also a big shout out to the managers who generously added to the prize money pool.

Thank you very much guys!

Now, With the tournament over we now move onto the other big fights of the evening and the Ironman Championship Belt was on the line.

Main Event - Ironman Division

Ironman Title Fight

(Champion) Mew Choo vs. (Challenger) “Big” Steve Butabi

Another fast starting fight and the champion Mew Choo drawing first blood within the first 10 seconds of the bell, opening a cut on challenger Steve Butabi’s face. An obviously angered giant lashed out at the champion in retaliation and dropped him with a disgustingly powerful combination. Ushering him back to his feet, Choo had just enough time to wipe the blood away from his fresh new cut before Butabi launched forward with a body shot that missed. Butabi was looking confident at this point and showing some good footwork to avoid the punches from Choo and was able to land some his own back in return.

An overhand left landed for Choo and Butabi took the fight into the clinch only to decide against it almost instantly. Chew missed with a combination and Butabi surprisingly countered with a takedown into side control. Choo regained half guard and started working for a Kimura but Butabi used his power to bully past into mount. Choo worked diligently to improve his position and Butabi was unable to do much but control. Eventually the champion regained half guard and once again started hunting for submissions. Butabi defended well but eventually Choo snuck a leg though back into full guard and from there went on the offensive. A guillotine attempt into a triangle that Butabi powered out of only for Choo to retake the neck and this time Butabi could do nothing about. The champion arched his back and squeezed and the challenger Butabi was forced to tap.

Mew Choo defeated Steve Butabi by Submission (Guillotine) at 3:29 of Round 1

It was a valiant effort from Butabi who will perhaps wonder if he didn’t make an error in judgement in going to the ground with the superior jiu-jitsu fighter especially considering his success on the feet early in the round

Mew Choo with a fifth successful title defense and also keeps his undefeated record alive at 10-0.

His next challenger is as yet undecided but one thing is for sure and that is that there is a definite target on the champions back with a long line of hungry willing fighters ready to step up and take a shot

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Wolfgang Lee Roth vs. Klaus “The House” Chugman

The Co-Main event of the evening featured two of the divisions best submission fighters going at it and what a fight it was.

From the opening bell, an immediate takedown from Chugman started an absolute submission shootout between the two of them. Both fighters scrambled for position and all the while battling for that finishing hold.

In the end if was Chugman who was able to force the tap with a Kimura from half guard and with it move ahead of the pack for most submission victories in the Ironman Fight Club now standing at seven.

Klaus Chugman defeated Wolfgang Lee Roth by Submission (Kimura) at 3:31 of Round 1

Another win for the diminutive grappler that takes his streak to five in a row and his overall record to 9-2. Chugman now moves up in the #2 position but with his team mate Mew Choo as champion he may find himself waiting a while for a chance to fight for the belt.

In other fights from tonights card

Brock Sampson moved closer to the Top 10 rankings afer a superb eighteen second KO win over an in-form Crack Head bringing his professional record to 4-1.

Two of the orgs young veterans En “Metal Priest” Esch and Naiki “The Drunken Finnish Demon” Nekele went at it tonight with Nekele coming out on top winning by KO at 4:19 of Round 2. Both fighters have been hovering around the midway section of the roster for a little while now but with this win Nakele moves into the Top 25 and improves his record to 7-3.

In the New Blood Division, Thierry “The Monster of Montmartre” Paulin kept his winning streak alive with a top performance against the big hearted Jack Dawson winning by KO in the first round.

Tonight’s fight of the night for me was Damien “The Terror” Demento versus Boss Yonic. The fight turned into a back and fourth grappling match that was difficult to score and in the end the judges were split in their decisions. Judge Jack Bonds scored it 29-28 for Yonic and judges Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac scored it the other way for the winner by split decision Damien Demento.

Lastly, an entertaining opening scrap between a thought to be retiring Terry Crew and up and coming Hank “Hill” Jones turned out to be enough to convince Crew to continue his MMA dream. After a short period of clinch fighting, Crew scored a nice trip takedown and proceeded to dominant Hill on the ground and eventually securing a rear naked choke on the undefeated Hill.

With the win Crew’s management announced the good news that Crew no longer felt like retirement was the best move for him

Ironman Fight Club Mid Week 10 (Hyashi’s Lounge, Los Angeles)

Sorry folks. I've not had enough time to do a preview for every fight but I will always try to get something down for the top 4 fights. I've also changed the format slightly so the preview will go from the main event down instead of the other way. Also the main division shall now be known as the Ironman division. Just trivial things really.

Main Card

Main Event – Ironman Division

Schmorgen Biscuit (6-3, 210lbs) vs. Greg “The Gronk” Bell (5-7, 300lbs)

Our main event of the evening is between two long time Ironman veterans Schmorgen Biscuit and Greg “The Gronk” Bell who both made their debuts back at IFC I.

Biscuit is a fighter long thought to have had the potential to be a player in the IFC title picture but as yet things haven’t quite come to fruition. After racking up several victories in a row, Biscuit faced a set back when he lost a controversial decision against contender Tommy Walcott which put a halt to his Top 10 ambitions. In his return fight he missed an opportunity to regain that momentum when he came up short against former champion Steven Kennedy losing by submission in the final round. Managing only one win in his last three, Biscuit really needs a win here if he is to prevent getting lost back in the mid roster

His opponent tonight is super-heavyweight submission wrestler Greg “The Gronk” Bell. Bell has had some up’s and down during his time in the IFC but has yet remained a main card fighter. He comes into this bout off the back of a submission loss to up and coming challenger Iain Tower and might just be looking to take out his frustrations on Biscuit tonight.

Both fighters are best on the ground and in fact are both similar in their styles there. Both preferring a top heavy control game that mixes up strikes with submission attempts. Both fighters have a impressive percentage of finishes and it will certainly be interesting to see who can assert themselves best when it comes to that part of the fight.

The key to this fight could be in the stand up. Biscuit has been improving in that area more and more each time we see him and has started to develop a pretty effective clinch game. Bell has never been one to stand and brawl and has often struggled when unable to get the fight down to the ground. Though Biscuit would not be the best striker Bell has faced there is still a large enough gap for it to be a concern for Bell

Biscuit might be considered the favorite here as he is younger and has maybe a few more tools to play with in this fight but Biscuit has come up short before and if this fight hit’s the floor, Bell would most definitely be in with more than a chance of putting Biscuit away.

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Ken “The Worlds Most Lethal” Shamrock (4-4, 175lbs) vs. Daniel “The Unsanitary” Sainty (6-5, 150lbs)

Our Co-Main event is a tantalising striker versus grappler feast with all the trimmings that usually come with such a dish.

Fighting for the first time in a co-main event slot “The Worlds Most Lethal” Ken Shamrock will be looking to put on a showcase performance for the IFC fans to ensure that it isn’t the last.

Shamrock has been somewhat inconsistent since ever since joining the IFC with his impressive white belt submission debut win against Terje Warholm and has generally alternated wins with losses. Shamrock is definitely a kill or be killed kind of fighter and this has reflected in his record which now stands at 4-4 with every fight ending in a finish either way. He comes into this bout off of a grueling battle with Dieter Schaafs in which Shamrock turned up the heat early in round three and took over to eventually get the win by TKO.

Facing Shamrock tonight is the “The Unsanitary” Daniel Sainty.

Sainty is a BJJ Brown Belt with a respectable level of wrestling to help supplement his submission favored style. He has had some impressive wins against top competitors and is currently tied 1st for submission wins in the org with six. With an overall professional record of 6-5, Sainty has had some tough fights lately and currently finds himself on the losing end of a two fight streak and outside of the Top 15. Having been ranked as high as #3 briefly at one time in the IFC, Sainty will not want to stick around where he is for very long.

In terms of match up there is little to add that isn’t already well known when it comes to style clashes such as these. We know we can expect Shamrock to seek the KO regardless of what Sainty will look to do and we know that should the fight hit the floor it wouldn’t take long for Sainty to find a finish.

This is a tough fight for Shamrock as Sainty has more experience in the cage and has been training for a little while longer. Sainty also has a decent record against strikers which could be due to his feeble but not completely inept skills on the feet. Shamrock definitely has a good chance going into this fight but if he is to take Sainty out, he will need to do it quickly and efficiently

Fight 8 – Ironman Division

Vedran “Blondebeard” Stefanovic (3-2, 260lbs) vs. Big Murha (2-0, 215lbs)

Vedran “Blondebeard” Stefanovic is another big, strong, do or die striker and will be making only his third appearance in the IFC cage. His last fight was against the tricky kicker Naiki Nekele who surprised everyone during that bout when he threw a lot more punches in the fight, one of which ended the night for Stefanovic. In that fight Stefanovic showed that while willing to throw, hitting the target was another problem and against his opponent tonight he may have to refine his accuracy less he suffer the same problem. Now with a record of 3-2, Stefanovic faces another tough test against young prospect Big Murha.

Big Murha, still in the early stages of his professional career, comes into this bout fresh from his successful IFC debut against Terje Warholm and a fight that he completely dominated. Currently undefeated at 2-0, Murha is a most definitely a fighter worth keeping an eye on in the future. With a granite chin and a brutally aggressive clinch game, Murha has shown that he is to be respected on the feet despite not being looked upon as an elite striker, on paper at least.

At first glance Big Murha looks to be the more well rounded of the two but if we are to take away Murha’s jiu-jitsu advantage, something that so far he has shown no real interest in, the fight begins to look a lot more even. Stefanovic has the better overall boxing but Murha has some strong Muay Thai skills and a better wrestling pedigree too which is what makes his clinch game so formidable. This is a tough test for Stefanovic who will find his best chance of success coming from the outside where he can look to land that one KO shot but if Murha manages to get a hold of him he will have a much harder time putting the undefeated youngster away.

Fight 7 – Ironman Division

Dieter “The Sheep” Schaafs (4-3, 190lbs) vs. “The Barbarian” Battle Ram (9-3, 220lbs)

Dieter “The Sheep” Schaafs has had some mixed results during his time in the IFC having gone an even 2-2. He put in a good performance against Boyd Clark at Mid Week 6 and avenged his loss to Dirty WhiteBoy with a third round KO at Mid Week 7 but comes into this fight off the back of a TKO loss to Ken Shamrock last time out. That loss hit Schaafs particularly hard and sources close to the fighter have told us that his confidence has hit rock bottom because of it.

Standing across the cage from Schaafs tonight will be “The Barbarian” Battle Ram.

Ram is currently in his second term with the IFC having previously fought under different management. Facing some teething problems early on, Ram dropped back to back losses to Terry Bogard and En Esch but has since turned things around is currently on a two fight win streak following bouts against Paul Michael Levesque and fearless journeyman Gin Kobra. Now with a record of 9-3, Ram could possibly move into the top third of the roster with another victory.

Of the two fighters, Ram is the more well rounded and has many more options at his disposal. Both fighters might be considered strikers but Schaaf has barely ever thrown a shot at distance, instead choosing to clinch and doing his work there. That is somewhere Ram has not had much luck with in the past and should the fight spend any significant time there, Schaafs would most likely be the one picking up the points. Ram has a blue belt in BJJ so taking the fight to the floor could be an option but overall his strongest attribute is his knockout power and this is reflected in his KO to win ratio which currently stands at 78%. Of course Schaafs is no slouch in that department and has himself scored three KO’s in four fights. Despite both of these impressive stats, this is a fight I could see going the distance but who will win really comes down to how much of the fight is spent in the clinch.

Undercard

Fight 6 – Ironman Division

Lord “God of Destruction” Beerus (3-2, 185lbs) vs. Vladimir “The Horizontal” Impaler (3-2, 270lbs)

Fight 5 – Ironman Division

Matt Griffin (4-6, 197lbs) vs. “The Phenomenal” Orgasmic Bliss (1-1, 300lbs)

Fight 4 – Ironman Division

Bea “Rick” Mason (4-4, 175lbs) vs. Paul Michael Levesque (4-7, 255lbs)

Fight 3 – Ironman Division

Ispa Murhaa (2-0, 192lbs) vs. James “The Nervous” Gregor (4-7, 210lbs)

Prelims

Fight 2 – Ironman Division

Shigeru Miyamoto (2-5, 160lbs) vs. Blitz “88” Krieg (5-3, 300lbs)

Fight 1 – Ironman Division

Loa “Spider” Kobula (0-0, 250lbs) vs. Patrick Thompson (0-1, 270lbs)

Ironman Fight Club – Mid Week 10 (29th November 2017 - Hyashi’s Lounge, Los Angeles)

Tonight's card marked the tenth mid week event for the IFC and admittedly it was a slightly subdued affair without much in the way of Top 10 action. Still, there was plenty of exciting fights and some real talent emerging from within the middle of the pack

Main Event – Ironman Division

Schmorgan Biscuit vs. Greg “The Gronk” Bell

In the main event of the evening, young wrestler Schmorgan Biscuit put on a dominant display over super heavyweight gate keeper Greg Bell and ended up winning a unanimous decision over three rounds.

Bell can be notoriously resilient at times and tonight he made Biscuit earn every penny of his fight purse. Biscuit didn’t throw much standing or in the clinch but what he did throw he landed. The vast majority of the bout was spent on the floor with Biscuit landing persistent ground and pound and Bell on the defensive for the entirety and unable to launch anything of significance himself.

Despite Biscuits best efforts, Bell managed to hang on until the end but was most definitely outclassed on this occasion.

Schmorgan Biscuit defeats Greg Bell by Decision (Unanimous)

Another win for Biscuit who moves to 7-3 and with it climbs back up around the Top 15. No one would dispute Biscuit has potential but so far he has fell short against top ranked fighters and until he proves himself at that level he is unlikely to be seen as a true threat in the title picture.

For Greg Bell this marks his second loss in a row albeit against very tough, up and coming competition and he now drops back down into the middle of the roster and will have to dig very deep to claw his way back up.

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Daniel “The Unsanitary” Sainty vs. Ken “The Worlds Most Lethal” Shamrock

A rare opportunity for Shamrock in a main event slot and a fight like this was going to go either one of two ways. Tonight it went Sainty’s.

Sainty, the grappler, wasted no time in engaging Shamrock, the striker, and secured the take down within the first thirty seconds. From there Shamrock was no match for the submission pedigree of Sainty who soon found himself with Shamrock’s exposed back and was able to sink in a rear naked choke.

Daniel Sainty defeats Ken Shamrock by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 3:46 of Round 1

A nice win for Sainty to get over a two fight slump and back to winning ways bringing his overall record to 7-5. Also with tonight's submission, Sainty moves equal with Klaus Chugman as the org’s top submission artist with a total of seven submission finishes.

In other fights from tonights card…

Big Murha put on a clinch clinic on the tough Vedran Stefanovic and ended the fight with a round 1 TKO around the three minute mark. 19 year old Big Murha remains undefeated at 3-0 and continues his march up the IFC rankings.

Dieter Schaafs put a halt to Battle Ram’s two fight winning streak when he did just enough to beat “The Barbarian” over three rounds and win a unanimous decision. A disappointing loss for Ram who will no doubt be upset he couldn’t get the second round KO predicted by his management team.

Vladimir Impaler collected his first win in the IFC after a failed debut at Mid Week 8. Displaying some lazer accuracy with his punches, Impaler got the TKO win over BJJ Brown Belt Lord Beerus who tried his best to get the fight to the floor

“The Phenomenal” Orgasmic Bliss picked up his second win in a row in the IFC with a superb first round submission victory over Matt Griffin

Bea “Rick” Mason also showed his submission prowess with a slick eighteen second triangle choke over monster wrestler Paul Michael Levesque. The win marks Mason’s second win in three fights since signing with the IFC and also earned him a Submission of The Night award.

Back in the Murhapuro camp, Ispa Murhaa mirrored that of his team mate Big Murha picking up his third win in a row to stay undefeated. He beat a very tough James Gregor by unanimous decision.

And lastly two unsuccessful debuts for two recent signings Blitz Krieg and Loa Kobula. Krieg suffered a second round TKO due to cut against Shiguru Miyamoto and Kobula lost a bizarre but extremely interesting decision against Patrick Thompson.

The following "of the night" awards are sponsored by IniTech Nutrition who stock both 160q Stamina Fuel and 160q Muscle Bulk along with their pioneering Chaos Energy 160q Recovery sup.
Fight Of The Night goes to Patrick Thompson vs. Loa Kobula

Iroman Fight Club XXVII – Hard Knocks, Los Angeles

Main Card

Main Event – Ironman Division

(#5) Brooklyn Brawler (7-2, 190lbs) vs. (#6) Taz “Crash” Bandichoo (6-4, 240lbs)

Top billing on tonight’s card should be an absolute war when high flying Brooklyn Brawler takes on the wild man Taz “Crash” Bandichoo who makes his return to the cage after a disappointing previous performance.

The Brooklyn Brawler has had a tremendous start to his IFC career having quickly beaten his way into the Top 10 and then taking out two former champs in Ricky Hughes (IFC) and Don Joe (Empire Grind) within his last three fights. The only blemish on his record since joining the IFC was an early second round loss to a then undefeated Steve Butabi in an exciting back and forth slug fest in which Brawler stood toe to toe with the big man until the end.

His opponent tonight, Taz Bandichoo, makes his return to the cage after dropping a decision loss to Don Joe and losing his #1 contender spot in the process. Previous to that result, Bandichoo had been on an absolute rampage in the division racking up a four fight streak of first round knockouts including one over one time #1 Tommy Walcott.

Brawler is a brave and competent striker but to stand and trade with Bandichoo could be playing too much into his the bigger man’s strengths. Bandichoo is wild though and not always the most accurate and this is something Brawler has punished in previous opponents. Both fighters have a frightening record of KO’s and if given an opportunity would have no problem in turning out the lights for the other.

With no clear challenger in line for a shot at the title, there has never been a better time for the Brooklyn Brawler to stake a claim. With a big performance tonight there is every chance the Brawler could leapfrog current #1 Don Joe who has already lost to champion Mew Choo and though has since put that loss behind him with three big wins, also has a loss to the Brawler not so long ago.

Make no mistake, this is a huge fight in the IFC title picture with the result of this fight squarely responsible for who will challenge next. With such mean intentions inside of him, could this be Bandichoo’s chance to ruin someone else’s shot at the title?

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Andre “No Dice” Clay (6-0, 146lbs) vs. (Top 15) Dave “Tightass” Brooksbank (6-6, 160lbs)

Co-Main event tonight pits undefeated young star Andre “No Dice” Clay against the super unpredictable Dave “Tightass” Brooksbank.

In a strange turn of events this will be Clay’s first fight in the Ironman Division after winning his only other IFC fights in the New Blood Division and also his last in the Ironman Fight Club overall. Clay’s management have sighted some concerns regards potential CTE as the reason and so sadly we must say goodbye to Clay from the no weight Ironman Fight Club.

On paper, this fight looks terrifically one sided with Clay having in the edge in most departments but Brooksbank has been a bane of the bookmakers so far in his career and a very tricky customer for those opponents who underestimate him.

Clay has enough power in his hands to trouble Brooksbank and will likely find too many opportunity's to do damage should the fight stay standing too long. Brooksbank will look to get this fight to the floor as quickly as possible and if he can, is in with a great chance of pulling off the upset.

Fight 8 – Ironman Division

Terry Bogard (4-2, 179lbs) vs. Trey Daniels (3-0, 250lbs)

Another big fight for the top end of the IFC ranks with two young fighters going head to head to see who will take that next step.

Terry Bogard came to the IFC when his original plans of competing in KT fell through. Winning his first two professional MMA fights, Bogard had seemingly made a great decision but since then has gone an even 2-2 bringing his overall record to 4-2. Bogard has shown how dangerous he can be when given the freedom to strike at distance but up to this point his grappling and submission skills have been his main weakness.

His opponent Trey Daniels is a similar fighter but has been seemingly addressing that very same problem as late. Currently undefeated after three fights, Daniels has shown an equally efficient taste for KO’s having finished all three of his opponents.

Both fighters are dead level in the stand up portion of the fight. Both prefering Muay Thai over anything else but both showing a proficient understanding of Boxing also. Were Daniels excels over Bogard however is in the grappling side of things and has a slightly better wrestling base and is currently a blue belt in BJJ compared to Bogard’s white. Whether or not Daniels plans to utilise this side of his game is another thing though but having that advantage does present other options that Bogard doesn’t have

Daniels is the taller and heavier fighter and also has wins over Bogard’s teammates previously. Bogard has been inconsistent of late and so would most likely be considered the underdog going into this fight.

Fight 7 – Ironman Division

Dark and Light” Soul Shadow (3-2, 170lbs) vs. Gosha Lopez (2-0, 135lbs)

The enigmatic “Dark and Light” Soul Shadow makes his return here tonight when he takes on young grappler Gosha Lopez who is fresh off of a sucessful IFC debut in his last bout.

Soul Shadow is currently 3-2 in his professional career and has only just turned 18. He has managed three wins out of his last four and, apart from a blip against current #2 Klaus Chugman, seems to be getting better each time. In his last bout, Shadow showed his growing maturity when he defeated boxer Chara Zaad by submission in the first round. Shadow started out by testing his striking before making the wise decision not to brawl with the boxer and instead took the fight to the ground and made it look all to simple with a beautiful kimura from side control.

His opponent tonight is twenty year old natural flyweight Gosha Lopez. In his last fight, Lopez put on quite a performance when he neutralised a far superior striker in Curtis Page using his exceptional wrestling and grappling ability to do so. With only two fights to his name and both under different management, Lopez is truly just beginning his MMA journey but so far looks to be a very exciting talent.

Both fighters are very evenly matched here. Shadow has a slight edge in the stand up and Lopez’s wrestling puts him ahead in the grappling. It would be simply to call this a grappler versus striker match up but it just wouldn’t be true. Soul Shadow is the quintessential representation of an all rounder and is very capable in all areas. Lopez too, though not by any stretch a great striker, has enough standing in comparison to Shadow to not get completely run over.

This will be a very interesting fight for both and one that I cannot wait to see.

Undercard

Fight 6 – New Blood Division

Juanon Brephgrad (2-1, 210lbs) vs. Pate Paukuttaja (1-0, 178lbs)

Juanon Brephgrad makes his IFC debut in the New Blood division and takes on an already blooded Pate Paukuttaja.

Though only nineteen, Brephgrad has already fought in two organisations already and tonights bout in the IFC marks his third. Currently 2-1, Juanon looks to have made some very good progress in regards to his skills and could end up being a significant signing for the division.

Pate Paukuttaja made a successful pro debut at IFC XXIII when he defeated Gusto Silva by unanimous decision. Now 1-0, Pate will be looking to continue on the wining path and perhaps towards a shot at the title.

Paukittaja will be looking to get this fight on the floor where he can use his superior wrestling to control the fight. Brephgrad is the superior striker but has a similar level of BJJ that could help him survive against the lighter Finnish grappler.

Fight 5 – New Blood Division

I Weigh” One Fortytwo (1-2, 142lbs) vs. Karl “Heartthrob” Gudbranson (0-2, 200lbs)

I’m not sure if we have ever seen such an instance of a fighter being significantly taller then the other and yet so significantly outweighed also but here we are.

“I Weigh” One Fortytwo makes his way into the bout after picking up his first professional win last time out against now retired David Brent. Fortytwo looked impressive in that fight ending it in the first round with a rare knee and punch combo.

His opponent is Karl “Heartthrob” Gudbranson who is still looking for his own first MMA win. Currently 0-2, Gudbranson has been unable to showcase his remarkable boxing skills but tonight might just get the chance.

Both fighters have very little interest in the ground game at this point and so we anticipate a stand up slug fest

Fight 4 – New Blood Division

Joe “The Alternate” Average (1-2, 210lbs) vs. “King” Maximilian Kirby (1-0, 165lbs)

Last time out Joe “The Alternate” Average picked up his first victory after ending up on the wrong side of a knockout in each of his first two fights. Making somewhat of an improvement, the former tournament alternate was able to dominant his opponent Jerome Steel with a very effective clinch effort. Now 1-2, Average looks to even out his record with another win and perhaps even leave the division with a winning record before turning twenty.

To do that however he will have to get past new signing “King” Maximilian Kirby who comes from the same camp as the New Blood Tournament runner up Micky Kirby and looks eerily similar only more advanced.

Kirby has already tasted victory once before with a first round TKO in the QFC circuit some months ago. Showcasing the same ground and pound style we have come to expect from the Kirby camp it’s probably no secret what “King” Max intends to do.

Fight 3 – Ironman Division

Urban “Brutus” Go Bucks (1-0, 255lbs) vs. “Dangerous” Milo Yiannopoulos (1-2, 215lbs)

Urban “Brutus” Go Bucks makes his return to the cage after rearranging James Gregor’s face with some razor sharp striking in his IFC debut. There the big heavyweight showed some excellent striking defence in avoiding most of what Gregor dished out, letting him punch himself out before returning fire with some laser accurate counter strikes.

He faces “Dangerous” Milo Yiannopoulos who will be making his IFC debut after a tough time in the Steel Penn organisation in Hilo. Currently sporting a record of 1-2, Yiannopoulos will be looking to put on a performance in his first showing in a new home.

Both fighters are similar but Yiannopoulos will have an edge in the striking. Go Bucks will enjoy a 40lb weight advantage over Milo which may be something to consider after hitting the target so often in his last fight. This will be a great fight to get the early crowd warmed up.

Prelims

Fight 2 – New Blood Division

Kyle “Animal” Ryan (1-2, 223lbs) vs. Long Thai (0-1, 165lbs)

Kyle “Animal” Ryan has so far been one of the biggest underachievers in the New Blood Division and will no doubt be hungry to start proving right those who picked him as a favourite to win the first New Blood Tournament. Ryan was knocked out from the tournament in the first round in a tough battle with eventual winner Fay Gott but then came back with a unanimous decision win himself over Sirimongkol Niyotrong. His last fight was another tough fought battle against charismatic Jack Dawson in which, once more, he found himself on the wrong side of a decision loss.

Taking on the “Animal” tonight is Muay Thai fighter Long Thai who suffered a first round TKO loss in under a minute in his IFC debut. Now 0-1, Long Thai looks to pick up his first professional victory.

With Ryan almost at the age where he must vacate the New Blood Division, this could possibly be his last opportunity to really show what he is made of. On paper, Kyle Ryan looks phenomenal and seems to have all the tools necessary to be a major threat in the Ironman Division should he choose to move up.

Fight 1 – New Blood Division

Gusto “Sub” Silva (2-1, 155lbs) vs. Angel “Sith” Raider (2-1, 235lbs)

Gusto “Sub” Silva had a tough time during his IFC debut and found himself just a step behind all night when he lost a unanimous decision to Pate Paukuttaja. After a promise start in his early career where he went 2-0 both via first round submissions, Silva will be keen to put his debut behind him and get back to wining ways.

His opponent is Angel “Sith” Raider who finds himself in a similar position. Racing ahead to a 2-0 streak, Raider will also be dealing with his first career loss as he enters the IFC cage once more.

Ironman Fight Club XXVII (2nd December 2017 – Hard Knocks, Los Angeles)

Main Event – Ironman Division

Brooklyn Brawler vs. Taz “Crash” Bandichoo

It doesn’t happen often in life when we are given a second chance for a shot at greatness but that is exactly what was being offered to the Brooklyn Brawler tonight when he took on the wild man Taz “Crash” Bandichoo.

It didn’t take long from the opening bell to see that the Brawler had the measure of Bandichoo and knew exactly what was needed to take him out. A flurry of missed strikes from Bandichoo and the Brawler took it straight into the clinch where he spent the remainder of the round pummeling Bandichoo’s head and body.

Brawler’s handiwork had clearly laid the groundwork for the second round when he landed the first strike he threw and dropped Bandichoo to the canvas. With a granite chin it was never going to be easy to put Bandichoo away and he instantly jumped to his feet ready for more and more he received. With a cut opened up on Bandichoo’s face, Brawler sensed the finish and launched forward with a monster uppercut dropping Bandichoo to the ground for the second time. Bravely Bandichoo rose to his feet as Brawler motioned him up and this time the fight went back into the clinch. From there it was just a matter of time as Brawler teed off on with uppercuts and hooks to the body before Bandichoo could withstand no more and dropped to the ground for the third and final time.

Brooklyn Brawler defeats Taz Bandichoo by TKO (Strikes) at 0:33 of Round 2

With this victory the Brooklyn Brawler emerges as the next in line to face champion Mew Choo and will get a chance to fight for the Ironman title at the end of the year

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Dave “Tightass” Brookbank vs. Andre “No Dice” Clay

In the co-main event BJJ fighter Dave Brooksbank gave hot prospect Andre Clay a little scare before the youngster was able to score big with a huge right hand to end the fight.

Brooksbank had one clear path to win the fight and instantly got things started moving into clinch and then dragging Clay into his guard. Clay showed some good patience and awareness and managed to control Brooksbank long enough to force a referee stand up. Now wise to Brooksbank’s plans, Clay avoided the clinch attempt and started to fire back with some heavy shots. A jab stunned Brooksbank and then a monster right hand finished the job laying him out cold

Andre Clay defeats Dave Brooksbank by KO (Punch) at 2:32 of Round 1

In other fights from the main card...

Terry Bogard defeated Trey Daniels in an entertaining stand up battle that was cut short when a cut suffered by Daniels early in the first round became too much of a concern for the ringside doctors. An unfortunate result for Daniels and one that hands him his first professional loss after previously going 3-0. Not a great way to win for Bogard either but with it he moves back into the Top 15 of the division.

Submission wrestler Gosha Lopez pulled of a superb win against eighteen year old Soul Shadow when he managed to secure a tight guillotine choke and keep his undefeated streak going. Now moving to 3-0, the natural flyweight Lopez will be starting to appear on the radar of those around the middle of the IFC pack.

The following "of the night" awards are sponsored by IniTech Nutrition who stock both 160q Stamina Fuel and 160q Muscle Bulk along with their pioneering Chaos Energy 160q Recovery sup.

Ironman Fight Club – Mid Week 11 (Hyashi’s Lounge – Los Angeles)

Fight Night Preview

Main Card

Main Event – Ironman Division

(#10) Steven “The Steamroller” Kennedy (7-5, 178lbs) vs. Wilson “KO” Reyes (6-4, 287lbs)

The evenings main event features a former champion scrapping hard to remain within the Top 10 and a fighter very close to breaking into it.

Steven “The Steamroller” Kennedy has been enjoying somewhat of a resurgence lately managing to win 3 of his last 4 with all of his wins coming by way of submission. In his last fight he showed great patience, remaining calm under pressure from ground and pound specialist Evgeni Lomachenko to eventually catch the smaller Russian fighter in a slick triangle choke. Now 7-5 and currently ranked #10 in the IFC, Kennedy will need another big performance here if he is to guarantee his place among the very top of the food chain a while longer.

Looking to make his way into the Top 10 tonight is journeyman fighter Wilson “KO” Reyes. During a professional career that has seem him appear in no less than five fight organisations, Reyes has cobbled together a winning record of 6-4 and it’s fair to say that some of those losses were against opponents he had no business being in the cage with at the time. A testament to his attitude and bravery but now, among opponents on an even playing field, we will get to really see how far Wilson Reyes can go. Reyes comes into this fight off of possibly a career best performance against juggernaut striker Android Seventeen where he thoroughly dominated in the clinch and ended the fight with a armbar submission.

This fight is expected to be a very competitive one with both fighters bringing a good amount of experience to the table and both having a relatively well rounded skill set. That said, both Wilson and Kennedy specialize in different areas and that is what makes this fight all the more intriguing. Reyes is predominantly a Muay Thai fighter and has a good record of KO wins to his name where as Kennedy is a BJJ Brown Belt and currently tied second in the org for most submission wins. Reyes has a big weight advantage here so anything he does land will definitely test the chin of Kennedy but his main concern will be ending up on the floor with such a proficient submission artist on top of him.

A former champion will always be looking to get back his belt and a win for Kennedy will bring him a step closer to that opportunity where as a loss will almost certainly guarentee dropping out of the Top 10. For Reyes, a chance to break into the Top 10 and a victory over a former title holder would do no end of good for his confidence going forward.

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Jaxson Wilder (6-1, 205lbs) vs. Vincent Lemieux (7-4, 270lbs)

Newcomer Jaxson Wilder made a big splash during his IFC debut last time out when he KO’d sensational boxer Lavar Washington in the second round. Now, with a record of 6-1, Wilder represents another example of the young, up and coming prospects currently marching their way to the top of the roster.

Tonight he’ll face Vincent Lemieux who will be making his first appearance in the IFC after a short, successful spell in the Steel Penn org in Hilo.

Lemieux got off to a terrible start in his MMA career losing all his first four fights with three of those by submission loss. Since then however Lemieux has made a remarkable turnaround and is currently on a streak of seven wins all coming by first round knockout. Currently 7-4, Lemieux faces a very tough welcome fight but one we are expecting to be fireworks.

Both fighters have a 100% record of knockouts in their victories which tells us they are both dealing with some serious firepower. For Wilder, this fight is very similar to his last where he had a significant advantage on the ground but has so far shown no interest in going there. This will be a big step up in competition for Lemieux who has spent the bulk of his career fighting in QFC fights. A tough fight to predict should the bout stay standing but if for some reason this fight did hit the floor, it would be a definite swing in Wilder’s favor.

Fight 8 – Ironaman Division

Harry “Tier” Hirsch (5-1, 250lbs) vs. Bricks “Parpaing” Thrower (9-5, 204lbs)

Harry “Tier” Hirsch has made only one appearance in the IFC so far but it was an impressive one as he took Muay Thai fighter Chong Tay off of his feet and out of the game with a nice first round submission. Now 5-1, Hirsch is enjoying some good form and has gone undefeated in his last three fights with all three ending with a finish and at only twenty years old, Harry Hirsch is definitely a fighter with time and potential.

Facing him tonight is long time IFC veteran Bricks “Parpain” Thrower and Thrower is also currently on a hot streak having finished his last three fights with first round KO’s.

At only 20 years of age, Thrower now has a wealth of experience behind him that many his age do not and is currently tied second for most fights in the IFC dating all the way back to the very first event. Constantly improving little by little, it has been a real treat watching the progress of Parpaing who has by now moved firmly away from the bottom of the pile and into the middle of the pack.

This should be a great test for each fighter and a highly competitive one at that with both being well rounded and in good form. Thrower will have an advantage in the stand up and Hirsch in the grappling. Thrower does have a history of KO losses and though Hirsch is unlikely to trouble Thrower too much standing, he does have some powerful ground and pound and has been known to take out opponents there. Thrower will want to do the bulk of his offence on his feet and avoid being in a position where Hirsch can trouble his chin.

It will be interesting to see who will take this fight as both will be able to keep their streak alive

Fight 7 – Ironman Division

Japa Koniu (3-1, 235lbs) vs. Donold “Home Wrecker” Trenchard (4-5, 155lbs)

Making his debut here tonight is Polish boxer Japa Koniu who comes to the IFC with a record of 3-1. So far Koniu has never been out of the first round and all of his three wins have been by KO. In his last fight, Koniu found himself on the receiving end of some viscous ground and pound and as a result suffered a horrific cut that forced the doctor to stop the bout. Technically a TKO but Koniu and many others will not consider this a true loss and it will certainly not deter him going forwards.

His opponent is Donald “Home Wrecker” Trenchard who is also making his IFC debut tonight. Currently sporting a 4-5 record, most of Trenchard’s fights have been in the amateur QFC league so this fight will be a marked step up in competition for him.

Striker versus grappler, this fight will come down to only one thing and that is whether Trenchard can get this fight to the floor. With rumors from his camp that Trenchard is not all there mentally and that his manangement has not been seen for some time it would definitely be considered a shock if Koniu didn’t come away with a stoppage finish in this fight

Undercard

Fight 6 – Ironman Division

Jim Beam (4-2, 135lbs) vs. Yoshihiro Sexyama (2-2, 190lbs)

Natural flyweight Jim Beam makes a return to the IFC cage after a disappointing loss to IFC veteran Delwyn Baines in his debut. Previous to that Beam had been on a streak of four KO wins and had the eyes of many watching his debut closely.

Tonight he’ll face 2-2 Japanese submission wrestler Yoshihiro Sexyama who will be looking to redeem his last performance when he lost to Bricks Thrower by KO.

Sexyama has been inconsistent in his performances and it is difficult to know what kind of fighter we will see tonight.

Sexyama has a mediocre grasp of boxing but would be foolish to try and trade with Beam despite having a 55lb weight advantage going in. Instead his best chance of victory would be in his grappling skills of which he is superior

Fight 5 – Ironman Division

Boyd “The Vanilla Og” Clark (4-7, 170lbs) vs. Rober Garfield (2-3, 260lbs)

For the first time in his career Boyd “The Vanilla Og” Clark is coming into a fight with the momentum of a two fight win streak behind him. During his 4-7 career so far, a win has usually been superseded with a loss but as of his last fight that curse has been broken. Clark's progress so far has been slow but is he is beginning to develop into a well rounded fighter with a preference for Muay Thai.

Facing him tonight is the under performing Rober Garfield. Garfield came into the IFC as an interesting 18 year old fighter signing who had been training already for some time and looked to had made some good progress with his skills. A record of 2-1 further increased the intrigue surrounding the young man but Garfield had a frustrating debut against grappler Evgeni Lomachenko who shut down the newcomers offence and finished the fight with a submission. Then in his return he lost to striker Terje Warholm who was able to control the clinch and finish the fight by TKO. Now with a record of 2-3, Garfield is still searching for his first win in the IFC and is yet to show us what he can really do.

On paper Garfield will have the advantage on the feet though Clark has recently shown some significant improvement in that area. On the ground Garfield will again also be considered the more skilled fighter holding a purple belt in BJJ compared to Clark’s blue.

If we take into account each fighters form we begin to see a fight that is much closer than it first appears. Clark is no world beater at this point and has suffered numerous KO losses but Garfield has had a tough time in the IFC and Clark could take advantage of that if Garfield isn’t mentally in the right place.

An opportunity for Clark to take out a young prospect in a fight that Garfield really should be winning.

Fight 4 – Ironman Division

Boss Yonic (6-5-1, 185lbs) vs. Facundo Galley (0-0, 170lbs)

Stepping in at the last minute to help fill a spot is IFC favorite Boss Yonic. Yonic is coming off of grueling back to back decision losses against a couple of very tough opponents. Both fights won fight of the night honors and Yonic can be content with his performances there but no doubt will be looking to get back into the top third of the IFC roster where he has spent the vast majority of his time since his debut at IFC II.

Stepping up to challenge the iron jawed grappler is debutante Facundo Galley who intends to compete in the New Blood Division after this fight. With nothing much known about the newcomer except for his Muay Thai preference, Galley’s story is yet unwritten.

A classic grappler versus striker match, Yonic will have a distinct experience advantage going into this bout. Clearly Galley will be looking to stop Yonic on his feet and avoid being on the ground with the far superior grappler but with Yonic’s absolute rock of a head and the fact that no one has yet managed to finish him that way, getting the KO is going to be extremely difficult.

Fight 3 – Ironman Division

Gin Kobra (4-7, 140lbs) vs. Chong “The Star Fish” Tay (5-5, 210lbs)

Long time IFC veteran Gin Kobra takes on struggling striker Chong “The Star Fish” Tay and tonight will have to overcome some poor form himself if he is to stand any chance of breaking his three fight losing streak. Gin Kobra is a fighter that is always ready and willing to sign on the dotted line but recently has only managed to get his hand raised once in seven fights. His last fight would have been very disheartening for the natural flyweight when he lost to Battle Ram by TKO in the third round in a fight most agree he was winning up to that point. In his last four fights Kobra has proven himself durable and tricky to put away suffering decision loses to very tough opponents in two of them.

His opponent is striker Chong Tay. Tay will be making his eleventh appearance in the IFC cage and has collected some very nice highlight reel KO’s during his time here but at 5-5 has been inconsistent with his performances and is still yet to put any real effort into the grappling side of MMA.

Tay is younger and significantly bigger than Kobra and will have the advantage in the stand up mainly due to his expertise in Muay Thai. Kobra is a superb boxer in his own right and may decide to test himself on the feet but it is his grappling that gives him his best chance of victory tonight and if he can manage to take this fight to the floor will it's probably that he will once again get his hand raised

Prelims

Fight 2 – Ironman Division

Lenny “Fagan Blaster” Manelito (2-8, 185lbs) vs. Heath “Lizard Arms” Bace (2-8, 300lbs)

Two struggling fighters go head to head in our second prelim fight tonight when Lenny “Fagan Blaster” Manelito takes on three hundred pound Heath “Lizard Arms” Bace.

Both fighters are coming into this bout on the wrong side of a five fight streak and will be desperate to gain victory over the other. Fagan the better striker, Bace the better grappler. This fight will simply come down to who wants it more.

Fight 1 – Ironman Division

Dreamer Panda (0-3, 300lbs) vs. Sascha “Widow Maker” Koniezko (0-5, 185lbs)

Opening the evening for us tonight we have two young fighters still chasing their first professional victory.

The three hundred pound wrestler Dreamer Panda has been steadily improving his boxing skills since joining the IFC but that hasn’t seemed to help him from getting knocked out in each of his three fights so far.

His opponent Sascha Koniezko, though coming into the fight a miserable 0-5, has fared slightly better during his career and has been a lot more competitive in his losses. Losing two via first round submissions and the other three by decision, Koniezko has at last shown glimmers of potential after five fights.

It is guaranteed tonight that one fighter will finally get their first victory and the bookmakers have Koniezko as the favorite to do so.

Ironman Fight Club – Mid Week 11 (6th December 2017 – Hyashi’s Lounge, Los Angeles)

Post Fight Recap

Main Event – Ironman Division

Steven “The Steamroller” Kennedy vs. Wilson “KO” Reyes

The evenings main event featured former IFC champion Steven “The Steamroller” Kennedy playing gatekeeper to the nomadic crowd pleaser Wilson “KO” Reyes and it was a rough night for the man from down under.

The opening bell rung and instantly Steven Kennedy found himself bundled into the clinch and under pressure from much bigger fighter Wilson Reyes. Reyes wasted no time in getting to work and hammered Kennedy with stinging lefts and thundering hooks to the body. Usually so calm under pressure Kennedy offered no resistance and after a beautiful knee to the ribs that took the wind out of him Reyes landed some punches from the inside that staggered Kennedy. Another left and then a big uppercut before Reyes pushed Kennedy back against the cage to create some space for a quick right hook that dropped Kennedy to the floor to which the referee mercifully stepped in to save him from any further punishment.

Wilson Reyes defeated Steven Kennedy by TKO (Strikes) at 1:57 of Round 1.

It was a truly dominating performance from Reyes who now moves to 7-4 and enters the IFC Top 10 at #7.

A demoralizing result for The Steamroller who drops out of the Top 10 and will most likely be wondering where he goes from here

Co-Main Event – Ironman Division

Jaxson Wilder vs. Vincent Lemieux

Fresh off of his fantastic debut at IFC XXV, big hitter Jaxson Wilder welcomed newcomer Vincent Lemieux to the IFC cage and got to see first hand what he was all about.

The opening round started fast with Wilder missing a hook to the body and Lemieux countering with a stiff jab to the face that opened a cut. A straight right from Wilder and Lemiuex slips and land with his own straight down the middle. The pattern went on for a while but with each exchange Lemieux obvious power was starting to take effect and another jab opened the cut even further. Undeterred, Wilder kept coming but was unable to land anything significant before one last monster overhand right dropped Wilder to the canvas and finished the fight.

Vincent Lemieux defeted Jaxson Wilder by TKO (Strikes) at 0:56 of Round 1

A perfect start in the IFC for Vincent Lemiuex who has now won eight in a row and keeps his frightening 100% KO record intact. With an overall record of 8-4 Lemiuex moves into the IFC Top 10 at #9

A definite bump in the road for Wilder who will no doubt be disappointed after such a solid display in his debut but at only twenty years of age has more than enough time to make a name for himself in the world of MMA.

Other fights from the evening.

Bricks “Parpain” Thrower kept the good times rolling after winning unanimous decision against German fighter Harry “Tier” Hirsch. It was a competitive bout with both fighters taking a round apiece but it was Thrower’s striking that won the night and swayed the judges taking the final round and increasing his record to 10-5 and unbeaten in his last 4.

Bricks Thrower defeated Harry Hirsch by Decision (Unanimous)

Donold “Home Wrecker” Trenchard almost upset the bookies with his performance managing to get an early takedown on Polish heavyweight Japa Koniu. Trenchard went for the kill trying to finish with submission attempts but Koniu managed to stay calm and defend long enough to get the reversal and then back to his feet. From there Koniu countered the take down from Trenchard and punished him with a straight to the gut and then dropped him with a slick head kick which cut Trenchard. Trenchard was motioned back to his feet only to find himself dropped once more and this time the referree stepped in to save him

Japa Koniu defeated Donold Trenchard by TKO (Strikes) at 2:13 of Round 1

Jim Beam and Yoshihiro Sexyama went the distance in a back and forth match up that was ultimately decided by Beams accuracy in the stand up.

Under performing prospect Rober Garfield picked up his first win in the IFC with a nice knee KO over Boyd Clark

Boss Yonic took debutante Thai Boxer Fernando Galley through a grappling masterclass and managed to get the armbar submission in under two minutes

Yet another heartbreaking performance from gutsy journeyman Gin Kobra who utterly dominated striker Chong Tay before getting caught in a frenzy of strikes from the heavier fighter and knocked out with a fantastic spinning back fist. What Tay lacked in finesse he made up for in aggression and it paid of in the end

Heath Bace piled on the misery for struggling Lenny Manelito and ended his own abysmal run of five losses with a first round KO victory

And lastly Sascha Koniezko picked up his first professional win in six fights with a strong performance over Dreamer Panda winning by KO in just under a minute. The loss for Panda means that the wrestler is still searching for his own first win in MMA

Ironman Fight Club XXVIII

(9th December 2017 – Hard Knocks, Los Angeles)

Main Event

Wolfgang Lee Roth (6-3,154 lbs) vs Brock “The Bodygaurd” Sampson (4-1, 170 lbs)

Brock “The Bodygaurd” Sampson will be looking to utilize his granite chin to claim an advantage in the standup game. Sampson has already scored two KO’s with his boxing prowess and will look to add to that tally. Although he seldom attempts takedowns, he has shown himself very comfortable when taken to the ground.

Wolfgang Lee Roth has a clear advantage in wrestling ability which will be key if he is to claim the win. Wolfgang’s best chance of winning will be to establish dominant ground position with his wrestling and display his tremendous ability land submissions. Wolfgang already has 6 submissions under his belt and is clearly the more experienced fighter. However, following his previous loss, he has seemed to lose all confidence in himself. Hopefully, he manages to pick himself up in time for the fight.

Co-Main Event

Ricky “Big Tex” Hughes (8-5, 264 lbs) vs Evgeni Lomachenko (6-5, 152 lbs)

Former IFC champion Ricky “Big Tex” Hughes is looking to revive his career after a string of disappointing results. The hugely popular fighter has yet to see a fight go to the decision and will seek to utilize that aggression to finish off Lomachenko before he has the chance to take the fight to the ground. Another factor will be whether he can shake off back-to-back losses and display the swagger of his prime.

Evgeni Lomachenko specializes in taking the fight to the ground and finishing it there. His quickness and solid chin will be his main tools in taking the fight to the ground, where he will have a real chance of winning. Lomachenko’s record in the IFC so far has been lacklustre however he seems to be confident in turning it around, starting with a win against the former champ.

Fight 8

Iain “The CN” Tower (5-0, 275 lbs) vs Mr Kaalee (4-1, 300lbs)

The battle of two young rising stars who are destined to set the IFC on fire.

Iain “The CN” Tower has started his career with a bang. None of his opposition have managed to survive a single round against him. Even with the limited time we have seen him in the cage, he has managed to demonstrate a diverse skillset. Remarkably, he has already scored KO’s with his fists, legs and ground game.

Mr Kaalee has already won and defended a GFO belt before his 20th birthday. He joined the IFC shortly after losing his belt and will no doubt set his sights on acquiring the IFC belt. Similarly to Tower, his fights have yet to go to the second round. He has so far been successful at softening up his opponents with a strong standup game, and finishing them with a devastating submission. At 300lbs, it is questionable whether he can sustain a high level should Tower be able to take the fight to the end.

This is my pick of the fights, mark my words, these two young fighters have huge careers ahead of them.

Fight 7

“Ashanti Warrior” Alambick Rana (5-0, 219lbs) vs Kenny “The Follower” Tchusuk (1-3, 265lbs)

18 year old Ashanti Warrior has been lighting up the stage with impressive performances in the clinch, earning himself 5 straight KO victories. Hailing from Senegal, he aspires to promote his unorthodox fighting style one fight at a time.

Kenny “ The Follower” Tchusuk has endured a horrible performance in the inaugural New Blood Tournament, crashing out with a record of 0-3. However, the young fighter has since improved his overall game and cameback with a first round KO victory. He can cause Ashanti Warrior some real problems if he asserts his strong standup game, where Ashanti Warrior has yet to prove himself.

Fight 6

Andy Bogard (5-4-1, 150lbs) vs Leonel Ventura (1-0, 265 lbs)

Andy Bogard will be itching to redeem himself in the ring after coming off back-to-back TKO losses. Bogard has two potent weapons in his arsenal to score this victory. Firstly, he is the more experienced fighter by far with 10 fights under his belt. Secondly, Ventura, who weighs in at 265 lbs, will struggle to keep up with the impressive gas tank of Bogard who weighs significantly less.

However, Leonel Ventura will not simply roll over to Bogard. Ventura showed off impressive power in his debut match, taking home the award for KO of the night. You get the impression that just one clean hit from Ventura is all it would take to send Bogard, who lost his last to fights by knockout, to the ground.

Expect the huge difference in weight to play a big factor in this fight, will the larger and more powerful Ventura score a KO, or will his weight drag him down as the fight wears on.

Fight 5

Michael “Bael” Bobeth (4-0, 185 lbs) vs Brett “The Bull” Bersten (5-4, 175 lbs)

Let’s make some noise for two experienced fighters making their IFC debut’s.

Michael “Bael” Bobeth has made a scorching start to his MMA career with a 4-0 record. His kicks have been particularly effective as he used them masterfully to score two consecutive KO’s.

Brett “The Bull” Bersten will be looking to utilize his impressive fight IQ to gain an advantage in this bout. In particular, he will be hoping to take advantage of Bael’s susceptibility to cuts. He should have ample opportunities, as both fighters are more comfortable brawling rather than taking it to the ground.

Will Bael continue unbeaten start, or will The Bull manage to exploit his weakness to cuts?

Fight 4

Kirk Lazarus (1-0, 265 lbs) vs Albert Van Roy (0-2, 256 lbs)

Lazarus displayed a strong ground game in his debut, winning the decision on the back of some brutalizing ground and pound whilst keeping his opponent in check. He will undoubtedly try to repeat that performance and take the battle to the ground where he has a significant advantage.

Albert Van Roy has had a dismal start to his career, with an 0-2 record. However, he does possess a very solid chin, which will be a valuable asset if he can stay on his feet and brawl. Lazarus has been known to cut easily and a few lucky shots might be all it takes for the referee to end the fight.

Fight 3

Alfred Touchard (4-0, 220 lbs) vs Jerome “Hands of” Steel (1-2, 279 lbs)

Alfred Touchard has had success in the QFC, but will he be able to translate that dominance into the IFC?

Touchard’s main asset is his speed, which allows him to takedown his opponent and utilize his devastating ground and pound game.

Jerome “Hands of” Steel will want to stay on his feet and unleash his superior standup game. He was absolutely lit up in the clinch in his last fight against Joe Average and will have to step it up if he is to stand any chance in this fight.

Fight 2

Anton Touchard (3-0, 170 lbs) vs Callum Kane (0-1, 170 lbs)

Similarly to Alfred Touchard, Anton Touchard has yet to prove himself outside the QFC and will be looking to silence his critics in this match. He has shown his ability to takedown his opponents, however it must be concerning that he has been unable to finish his opponents after getting them there.

Callum Kane is abit of an unknown quantity after taking a quick loss to Ashanti Warrior in his debut match. Kane will be looking to showcase his abilities in this fight and prove that he has what it takes.

Fight 1

Hennig Muller (0-1, 184 lbs) vs Ivashin Dmitrievich (1-2,240 lbs)

Hennig Muller took a quick debut loss after taking a hit from the much larger Tan Han Tuong. Once again, Muller opts to take a fight where he is much lighter. Muller’s best bet in this fight is to take advantage of Dmitrievich’s weak ground game to gain the upperhand.

The promise Dmitrievich showed in his debut match against One fourtytwo is starting to fade after two disappointing first round losses. Youth is still on Dmitrievich’s side as he is 19 years old and can still develop, although you wonder how much patience his manager will have should he fail to seal the deal.

Ironman Fight Club XXVIII (9th December 2017 – Hard Knocks, Los Angeles) - Post Event Recap
Main Event
Wolfgang Lee Roth vs. Brock “The Bodyguard” Sampson
The evenings main event featured long time Top 10 IFC veteran and proven submission specialist Wolfgang Lee Roth taking on rising star Brock “The Bodyguard” Sampson.
Round one began and after a little exchange on the feet Lee Roth managed to drag Sampson to the ground and proceeded to test the grappling defense of the larger fighter Sampson. Lee Roth maintained control throughout the round and at one point ended up on Sampson's back but was enable to finish the fight from there and the round ended. 10-9 Lee Roth.
Round two was much the same. An exchange on the feet and a much more aggressive Lee Roth than we’d seen before. Lee Roth shot from a distance and caught Sampson napping once again taking him to the floor and went for the kill pulling out of trick out of his sleeve that he could. Sampson remained cool and was able to defend everything Lee Roth threw at him but still, it was clear who was dominating the fight at this point. Another round for Wolfgang Lee Roth and Sampson’s team knew that only a finish would do from here.
With both fighters given their final instructions from their corners, Round three began and Sampson came out swinging. A flurry of strikes and then a jab, cross combination from Sampson of which Lee Roth countered with a driving takedown into guard. The one minute mark passed with Wolfgang on top, trying to pass the guard of Sampson. Two minutes in and Lee Roth passed into mount and attempted a kimura but to no avail. Sampson defending well but with time running out. Three minutes gone and Lee Roth maintains position but there's a noticeable lapse in output from both fighters and it becomes apparent that Lee Roth would be quite content to ride this one out to the final bell. The referee decides there’s not enough action and just before the four minute mark stands both fighters up.
Both fighters clearly tired and the result almost a foregone conclusion but one final push from Sampson.
Sampson landed a jab, followed by a cross and then another and had Lee Roth backing up against the cage. Sampson throwing strikes but Lee Roth avoiding using some good head movement. Lee Roth pumps out a half hearted jab in retaliation and Sampson counters back with a left hand that just misses. Twenty seconds remain and a kick to the body from Lee Roth and then BOOM! Sampson dropped Wolfgang with a left, right combo and dives on the fallen fighter into side control. With Wolfgang clearly dazed Sampson applied a tight kimura and started cranking forcing Wolfgang Lee Roth to tap with only five seconds of the fight left.
Brock Sampson defeated Wolfgang Lee Roth by Submission (Kimura) at 4:55 of Round 3
It was an epic comeback from Sampson to take out the #10 ranked fighter in the IFC and with it improves his record to 5-1 and usurps Lee Roth’s #10 spot for himself.
Co-Main Event
Ricky “Big Tex” Hughes vs. Evgeni Lomachenko
In the co-main event of the evening it was almost back to business for Ricky “Big Tex” Hughes when he opened round one against Evgeni Lomachenko with a massive uppercut that dropped the smaller fighter and opened a nasty cut but over excitement got the better of the former champ as he followed Lomachenko down to the ground in order to finish the fight. Lomachenko was able to regain his senses and managed to reverse Hughes using his superior grappling skills and proceed to soften Hughes up before ending the fight by submission
Evgeni Lomachenko defeated Ricky Hughes by Submission (Kimura) at 1:48 of Round 1.
Another shock turnaround only this time caused by an uncharacteristic mistake from one time IFC champion Ricky Hughes. Hughes will have every right to be disappointed with himself as he drops to his third loss in a row and suffers the lowest period in his career so far.
A superb scalp for Lomachenko who moves back into the Top 15 and overcomes his own two fight losing streak. His record now currently 7-5.
Other fights from the main card.
Two top prospects collided when Iain “The CN” Tower took on former super-heavyweight GFO champion Mr Kaalee.
Kaalee gave as good as he got early on but very quickly Tower started to take over with his kicks before securing a takedown into half guard. Kaalee threw up a submission attempt of his own but Tower defended, remained patient and eventually finished with a slick rear naked choke just before the three minute mark.
Iain Tower defeated Mr Kaalee by Submission (RNC) at 2:58 of Round 1
Iain Tower continues his march up the rankings and remains undefeated after six fights with no one so far managing to make it out of the first round with him. Tower moves up to #7 and on his currently trajectory looks to be a genuine threat to the IFC crown.
In a night filled with shocks and last minute comebacks without a doubt the biggest upset of the evening was in the New Blood division and 1-3 Kenny “The Follower” Tchusuk defeating 5-0 “Ashanti Warrior” Alambick Rana in a fight that many believed a mere formality for Rana. The result also throws a spanner in the works as Rana was all but guaranteed a shot at the New Blood Title upon winning the fight but now will lose that opportunity to the man who defeated him.
Kenny Tchusuk defeated Alambick Rana by TKO (Strikes) at 0:09 of Round 1
Undercard
Leonel Ventura wins his second fight in the IFC and moves his record to 2-0 with an impressive TKO victory over the more experienced Andy Bogard
Michael “Bael” Bobeth remains undefeated after a unanimous decision victory over IFC newcomer Brett “The Bull” Bersten
Albert Van Rooy picked up his first win after two fight beating IFC debutante Kirk Lazarus by KO early in round two
In the New Blood Division Jerome “Hands of” Steel survived an early scare against submission wrestler Alfred Touchard and went on to win by KO at 3:54 of Round 1
