SPFT 111 – Moses vs Martin 3 post fight review

Another huge pay per view is in the books for Steel Penn Fighting Temple. And as usual, this one did not disappoint! Over 140,000 pay per view sales and a near sold out crowd at at the LA Collesium made sure there were plenty of funds to pay out the fight of the night awards. Of which there were several contenders for each.

Moses Kealekapuna def Frank Martin via TKO (knee).

This fight was as short as it was violent. The challenger wanted to clinch up early but was largely unable to do so. The only time he really got his hands on the champ was right at the end, when a knee to the solar plexus ended the fight. The round was heading Martin’s way as well, as he had landed more blows along with being the more aggressive fighter, but all it took were two powerful, well timed blows from Moses to turn out the lights.

Lobsta Mang def Jefferson Davis Hogg via unanimous decision.

This was a pretty exciting fight throughout. JDH fairly dominated the first round. He kept the fight standing, and landed quite a few blows while taking virtually no damage at all. Mang was cut open and there was no doubt on anyone’s mind as to who owned it. The second round swung the other direction. Mang was able to get the fight to the ground early and keep it there. Landing some ground and pound, cutting Hogg open, and nearly securing submissions several times. The third round was really full of action as both fighters gave all they had. In the end though it was Mang who landed a few more shots and was able to slip out with the victory.

Super Hans def Phil Mcracken via guillotine choke. (SOTN)

Super Hans had come over from BFT for a fight, wanting to prove that the belt around his waist was no fluke. Against Phil Mcracken he did exactly that. Mcracken wanted to show his dominance in wrestling and managed to score a few takedowns. But it was Hans who drove for the finish while there, attempting a ton of submissions to keep Mcracken’s ground and pound at bay. Hans dominated the fight while standing, proved to be a match for Mcracken on the ground. And at the end of the fight Mcracken was solidly behind. The Greek challenger flailed mightily in an attempt to secure a come from behind knock out, but made a crucial mistake. One that led to him tapping out with a mere four seconds left in the fight.

Hans Landa def Severi Turpaansaaja via unanimous decision.

The 155 pound title was up for grabs in this bout. Turpaansaaja actually lost this belt in his last fight, but it was returned to him, de facto, when the new champ left for another organization. Unfortunately he was not able to take advantage of this second round. Landa cut the Finn early and established dominance in the first round. Then built on the advantage to string together five really strong rounds that were never in doubt. The only question that arose was if Landa was going to have the gas tank to go five full rounds with a proven competitor. The answer was yes, but only barely. It was obvious he was exhausted in the fifth round. Only perserverence and solid defense kept him from taking a late beating. Congrats to the new champ!

Sergei Bautin def Francois Duvalier via knock out (punch). (KOOTN)

These two giants both went in to hurt their opponent and put on a show. Both men succeeded. It’s hard to call someone “ahead” with less than a minute of fighting, but Duvalier had managed to cut his opponent and land several really good shots. But then he made the cardinal mistake. Kids at home reading this, amateur and hopeful fighters, learn this lesson now. NEVER DROP YOUR HANDS. Duvalier ate a jab for his troubles, which stunned him briefly. Perhaps Duvalier was surprised that Bautin took advantage of the opportunity, but at any rate Bautin followed that up with an absolutely vicious left hook that sent the Hatian spilling to the canvas. The lights were out when he hit the mat. A great knockout win.

Virgil Cid def Jebidiah Tayber via KO (punch).

A highly entertaining fight here. The fighters split the first two rounds in pretty dominant fashion. The first going to Tayber with a dominant ground game. The second to Cid with solid stand up. Cid and Tayber were pretty even in the third round, but Cid took advantage of the fact that Tayber was gassed to land a couple of really good head kicks. Those kicks rocked Tayber, who was never able to recover. It took another minute or so, but Cid was able to finish the fight.

Leopold Scotch def Tim Ernst via split decision.

It was a surprise to many that this wasn’t the fight of the night. Ernst came out in the first round and took charge offensively. He turned that aggressive posture and used it to win round one, despite getting a cut under his eye. The second round was much closer, with Scotch taking it on most cards thanks to being in the dominant position in most of the clinch and ground action. The third round was split right down the middle, with Ernst leading it early but then Scotch nailed a takedown and got straight to side control. From there he was definitely the aggressor, although not a particularly damaging period of ground and pound. It appears to have been enough for two of the judges to award him the round, and with that round went the fight.

Nathan Corbett def Anthony Joseph via KO (head kick).

Joseph and Corbett both stepped into the cage with one goal, namely to hurt the other person badly. Both were at least partially successful at first, as the two fighters cut each other open. But it was Corbett who was able to capitalize on the opportunity. By the end of the fight Joseph was a bloody mess. The fight ended because Corbett managed to land head kick after head kick. But the cut on Joseph’s face was getting really bad. It was only one or two good shots away from causing the doctor to end the fight anyways.

John Malham def Riley McCollins via Kimura.

This fight was a showing of dedication to a craft and a showing of determination. Malham’s bell was run early but he was able to defend well enough and get McCollins to the ground. McCollins defended well from the bottom in the first round, stalling Malham out well enough to get the ref to stand up the fighters. Round two was a different story though. Malham got McCollins on the ground and worked steadily until he was finally able to secure the submission.

Adam Gracie def Romano Schoots via Triangle Choke.

Schoots came into the fight appearantly wanting to get into the clinch and throw elbows and knees. This didn’t work well at all though, as Gracie managed to pull guard and keep Schoots on the ground. Despite having top position Schoots was unable to do much in terms of ground and pound. Gracie worked from his back for submission attempt after attempt. It took the entire round, but with two whole seconds left in the round Gracie was able to force Schoots to tap out. A shame Schoots was unable to hold on those last two seconds.

SPFT ICON- Dynasty K1 Tokyo

Dynasty 154: Redmeption thrilled a near capacity crowd in Tokyo on Friday June 14. The evening was a showcase of rematches and grudge matches that turned in some of the finest K1 fighting in recent memory.

The evening was capped by the highly anticipated return match between Blithering Idiot (25-3) and Liam Harrison (19-5-1). These 2 fighters have had a long history dating back to the old IKBL days where Harrison handed Idiot one of his 3 defeats. Since joining Dynasty, Idiot has rolled to 7 straight victories and shot to the top of the 155 lb rankings. His old foe Harrison had taken note and had been calling out Idiot for a return match in the past few months. After originally balking at the idea, the powers that be were finally able to get these 2 old foes back into the ring.

The world is clearly a different place these days as Blithering Idiot proved that he has only grown as a fighter since his disappointing KO loss on Oct 2012 to Harrison. Blithering Idiot used has high-volume boxing skills to clearly control the pace of the return match. In a surprise, Idiot swept all 5 action-packed rounds to claim a unanimous decision. Both fighters landed & threw at high rates with Idiot's better precision and slightly better power be the deciding factor. With the victory, Idiot is clearly in line for a shot at the 155 lb title. All fans of K1 would suely love to see a 3rd & final showdown b/t these 2 action fighters.

In other great action, Victor Caffey finished HOF legend, Felix Barr by KO stoppage (Knees). This is the 2nd victory for Caffey over Barr. There may be a changing of the guard at 155 with this 2nd impressive stoppage of one of the legends of KT. Impressive KO victories by Giovanni Niccoli (over Bill Lumberg), Jason Eckstein (over top contender Shamus McDermid) and Tyler Crain (over Victor Hugo) also kept the crowd on their feet throughout the evening. Of particular note was the impressive upset victory by Eckstein over veteran McDermid. The win vaulted Eckstein to #3 in the LHW world rankings.

Keep up the great fights,

JS
