SENSEI FC 12: Mellios vs Andrade was a mixed martial arts event held by SENSEI FC, in conjunction with Paddy's Enhancing Drugs (160Q) on February 19, 2022 at Hayashi's Lounge in Tokyo, Japan. [Undercard Bouts] (Middleweight Division) Aki Nakatani (0-1) versus Shaun Wallace (0-2) Round 1 – As our first fight of the night began, Shaun Wallace took the early lead. Circling on the outside, he began working long punches and kicks to keep Aki Nakatani at bay. Nakatani continually pushed forward but without throwing any strikes. As Wallace came forward to strike, Nakatani pushed forward and clinched. The two fighters circled and jockeyed for position in the center of the cage; Wallace fired off a couple of short punches to the midsection although Nakatani did well to smother the assault. Wallace broke free and circled away. Nakatani pushed forward and the two clinched up again. Wallace dominated in the clinch this time, pushing Nakatani against the cage and punishing the fighter with punches. For the majority of the rest of the round, Wallace dominated every facet of the fight both in the clinch and at range. Midway through the round, Wallace caught Nakatani with a big right hand that staggered him! Wallace followed it up with a lunging left hook that knocked the man out cold. Shaun Wallace def. Aki Nakatani via KO (Punch) at 2:44 of round 1! (Middleweight Division) Shane Fergusson (0-1) versus Kojuro Kano (0-1) Round 1 – Scottish Shane Fergusson came out to the soothing melody of bagpipes and drums which is always a popular sound in a crowded arena full of drunken fans of unarmed combat. We were promised a high level kickboxing match in this fight and these boys delivered. The entire opening round was spent fighting at a feverish pace. Punches and kicks, these boys brought it all. Although Kano seemed to have the higher output at times, Fergusson was landing the arguably heavier shots in this round. Round 2 – This round was more of the same as both fighters were bringing it. Fergusson did well in the opening minutes but seemed to fade as time slowly ticked by. Meanwhile Kano seemed to catch a second wind and come on stronger. Round 3 – Ferguson did well countering in this round but it just wasn't enough to overcome the volume of Kano. Kojuro Kano def. Shane Fergusson via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). After the fight, Shane Fergusson released this statement: "Congratulations to Kojuro Kano for his victory. He managed to handle his fight well... but I hope to have a rematch in a few months." (Welterweight Division) Harley Bird (1-0) versus Vernik Dahl (0-1) Round 1 – In this battle between two strong Jiu-Jitsu fighters, Vernik Dahl wasted no time in shooting in on the legs of Harley Bird. Vernik Dahl clearly dominated the grappling but Harley Bird defended well for three hard minutes before being caught in the fight ending armbar. Vernik Dahl def. Harley Bird via Submission (Armbar) at 3:20 of round 1! (Super-Heavyweight Division) Callum Adams (0-1) versus Niven Grier (0-0) Round 1 – Niven Grier wasted no time in shooting a telegraphed double leg takedown but Callum Adams easily avoided the shot. As the two fighters reset in the center of the cage, Adams threw a half hearted right hand that Grier avoided with some swift head movement. As the two fighters came forward at once, Grier landed a nice uppercut. Adams shook the punch off and reset before coming forward with a jab. Then another jab, followed by a right cross! Adams landed another jab and then tied Grier up against the cage. In the clinch, Adams dominated with short range punches. One minute in, Adams rocked Grier with a big uppercut. Adams smelled blood, going in for the kill with more punches. As Adams fired off more punches, Grier went down against the cage and the referee stepped in to stop the fight! Callum Adams def. Niven Grier via TKO (Punches) at 1:17 of round 1! (Light-Heavyweight Division) Petr Sirotek (2-1) versus Dave Sub (0-0) Round 1 – The two fighters met in the center of the cage and Petr Sirotek clinched with Dave Sub right away. Sirotek started working uppercuts in the clinch. Despite his early success, Sirotek broke the clinch. Seizing his opportunity, Dave Sub immediately scored a double leg takedown into the guard of Sirotek. Sirotek tried to wriggle free but Sub passed into half guard. Dave Sub postured up and then rolled for a leg lock! Sirotek popped his leg out and climbed into the top position, landing in guard on top! Sirotek postured up to start dropping ground n pound and Dave Sub immediately went for an armbar! Sirotek submitted to avoid harm. Dave Sub def. Petr Sirotek via Submission (Armbar) at 0:50 of round 1! [Main Card] (Super-Heavyweight Division) Max Planck (1-0) versus John Kowalski (1-0) Round 1 – Max Planck wasted no time pushing forward and throwing a big power jab that busted open a cut over John Kowalski's right eye. Kowalski fired back with a body shot and tried to fire off a double jab but Planck slipped both shots. Planck came back with a big overhand right that knocked Kowalski unconscious! Max Planck def. John Kowalski via KO (Punch) at 0:09 of round 1! (Light-Heavyweight Division) Shozo Amisaki (1-0) versus Pablo Asprilla (0-1) Round 1 – The two combatants opened up right away trading strikes. After a fairly evenly balanced exchange of strikes for the first minute, Amisaki engaged Asprilla in a clinch. From this position, Asprilla dominated the remainder of the round. Round 2 – Asprilla opened the round by throwing a wild hook that missed by a mile, then a jab that snapped the head of Amisaki back. Amisaki fired back with a chopping leg kick and avoided a jab. Amisaki clinched and worked his short elbows, but Asprilla quickly took control once again. Against the cage, Asprilla worked heavy punches and shoulder strikes while easily nullifying the offense of Amisaki. As Asprilla was working more big punches, Amisaki grabbed the Thai plumb and landed a huge knee to the face of Asprilla! Pablo Asprilla pulled back, covering his face with his arms, and Amisaki cracked him with a big body kick, and then another! Then, as Asprilla went to cover his midsection, Amisaki nailed him with a head kick that knocked him out! Huge comeback victory for Amisaki! Shozo Amisaki def. Pablo Asprilla via KO (Head Kick) at 1:31 of round 2! (Middleweight Division) Nathaniel Lewandowski (1-0) versus Bob Allen (0-0) Round 1 – Bob Allen started this fight by clinching immediately, but Nathaniel Lewandowski reversed and began pressing Allen against the cage. Allen tried to pull guard but Lewandowski controlled well. Midway through the round, Lewandowski broke the clinch and cracked Allen with a big body kick! Allen stepped back to take a big, deep breath. For the remainder of the round, Lewandowski put on a striking clinic against the untested Allen. Round 2 – More beautiful striking from Nathaniel Lewandowski as he rode his bicycle, forcing Bob Allen to come to him. About thirty seconds in, Lewandowski dropped Allen with a big head kick! Lewandowski jumped into mount on top of his wounded, bloodied opponent. Although he didn't do much with the position, Lewandowski dominated the round, landing just enough punches to maintain the mount. Round 3 – Bob Allen did well to defend himself in the early goings here. Although he managed to clinch briefly, Lewandowski quickly broke the clinch. Allen tried to shoot in for a takedown but it was stuffed with ease. Lewandowski began landing with regularity again. Midway through the round, Lewandowski dropped Allen with a big head kick! This time, Allen was allowed to regain his feet. As Allen pushed forward to clinch, Lewandowski landed a big hook that put him down! Lewandowski began raining down punches on his felled foe until the fight was gracefully stopped. Nathaniel Lewandowski def. Bob Allen via TKO (Strikes) at 2:45 of round 3! [Co-Main Event] (Featherweight Division) Yasuda Takahiro (1-1) versus Jevon Grimson (0-1) Round 1 – An early clinch from Yasuda Takahiro started off our co-main event. Jevon Grimson wanted desperately to get back to range but Takahiro just kept nailing him with short punches and elbows. After nearly two minutes, the referee separated the fighters and a striking exchange ensued but for a moment as Takahiro clinched once again. This time, Takahiro stalled and controlled for the remainder of the round. Round 2 – Second verse, same as the first; Takahiro dominated the fight using his clinchwork. Round 3 – More of the same; Yasuda Takahiro holding Jevon Grimson against the cage and hitting him with punches, knees, and elbows to dominate yet another round. Yasuda Takahiro def. Jevon Grimson via Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-25). [Main Event] (Middleweight Division) Gabriel Mellios (3-0) versus Todd Andrade (1-0) Round 1 – Our two main event grapplers met in the center of the cage, both looking to wrestle immediately! Todd Andrade shot in for a takedown that was stuffed by Gabriel Mellios! Again Andrade shot in for the legs of Mellios and again his efforts were for naught. The two fighters collided and Andrade tried to clinch but Mellios shoved him back, ducking under his arms to score a takedown into guard! After passing into half guard, Mellios began dropping punches! Body, body, head for Mellios who quickly followed it up by passing into full mount! Mellios postured up and began dropping big shots on Andrade, who quickly covered up and rolled to his side until the referee stepped in to stop it! Gabriel Mellios def. SUCKER PUNCH PREVIEW Sucker Punch Pro Series 121 Alright folks, Donkey will be joining me as we quickly attempt to get through a preview for SPPS 21 which will be taking place at the Wombly Arena in London in just about…oh…two hours by the time this piece is fully published! Had a very busy day out of the house yesterday so no opportunity to get this done in advance. So…expect a very abbreviated section on each fight this go-round! No title fights on the card but the Main Card is still stacked at the top with the big boys, Chontamenti and Harrison, headlining and Machado/Blikstein representing the Middleweights in the Co-Main Event. We’ve also got great fights leading up to that with Furioto/Cobain, Thai/Ecker and Camara/Bolt! As I said, we’re very short on time, so we’re just gonna jump right into the word from our sponsor and merchandise partner and get to the fun stuff for each fight in more detail! Now, let's get to it! *********************** Undercard Bout #1: Lightweights Trevor Barnes (9-8-1-0) v Montesh Dominguez (7-11-0) HR: Donkey, I’m a bit disappointed here as both fighters come into this a bit unprepared with the morale off. DD: And that’s a big part of why they’re opening the card I’d think Hare! If they were more prepared on the regular they’d probably see more consistent success. HR: It looks like the skills are tightly matched for this one, with perhaps Dominguez claiming a small advantage in boxing, Muay Thai and even a tiny bit of wrestling. But there are no significant differences honestly. DD: Correct Hare, so we’ll jump straight to what I expect to see in this fight and my pick I think… HR: Ah, just one moment Donkey. First, let me fill folks in on recent trends and the outlook for these guys. Dominguez has lost four of his last five fights and comes into this one on a three fight losing streak. As you might guess, that puts him in a perilous position as we’ve started to trim down some of the weaker portions of the roster in all divisions. It’s safe to say that tonight is an absolute “must win” for him. Trevor Barnes comes in with the yo-yo action going on, bouncing between wins and losses one fight after the next. The morale issues are a direct result of him still, STILL, wearing his tighty whities. No matter what we do, some managers just won’t listen when it comes to the advice on fixing these things. He’s not quite on the hot seat yet, but a couple more losses in a row would certainly put him there, and a loss to an unprepared fighter like Dominguez tonight who is on such a losing streak himself would not be a good look. He needs to win almost as much as Dominguez does. Ok, now to your pick Donkey! Donkey’s Pick: Barnes via Unanimous Decision Dominguez tends to balance his approach between kickboxing and Muay Thai in the clinch. Barnes sticks more to the kickboxing aspect of things with a ton of leg kicks typically thrown out there. Neither fighter has a history of finishing, so there’s a very good chance this goes to the judges. I expect that Barnes should come out on top only due to having a bit more success of late and his two most recent losses being to a ground specialist in Furioto. *********************** Undercard Bout #2: Middleweights Red Jesus Karter (6-0-0) v Tyson Law (10-8-0) HR: Next up we have a Middlweight battle that will see Red Jesus Karter put his perfect 6-0 record on the line against what should be his toughest challenge yet in Law. Law doesn’t quite have the same record Donkey, but he has the edge in Jiu Jitsu in this one by a bit of a margin and that should make it interesting! DD: All very true Hare and Law’s last three wins, although spaced apart a bit with losses in between, have all come via submissions. So the threat is real for Karter tonight. That said, Karter’s last fight was against Hall and he did a great job of not falling to the many submission attempts that Hall threw at him. So the potential is there to see him handle Law just as well! HR: Karter looks to enjoy staying on the feet and staying separated. So do we have your classic striker versus grappler contest coming at us here Donkey? Law does need this win here, as a loss would leave him 2-5 in his last seven over two managers. That’s getting precariously close to a situation where we would have to consider setting him free. Give us a pick and your thoughts on how this goes, Donkey! Donkey’s Pick: Karter via TKO (Strikes) Your classic matchup is exactly what I expect in this one Hare, as you stated. Law will undoubted want this on the ground and may even get it there. The real test will be whether Karter can handle his level of submission and ground skills? It’s hard to pick against Karter so long as he hasn’t shown a weakness to date! Law has fallen via strikes before, so the precedent is there as well. I’ll go with the trend for now until somebody proves otherwise. *********************** Undercard Bout #3: Heavyweights Daniel Spong (6-3-0) v Akuma Manivong (6-6-0) HR: Next up, some of the big boys head into the cage including my own Manivong there Donkey! Both fighters are set and ready to go, so this should be a solid fight I’d think? DD: It should be, but I’m afraid I have to say that I think your boy is up for a bit of a rough challenge here tonight Hare. He’ll have the advantage in Muay Thai and a tad bit of boxing, but Spong has the wrestling advantage, a black belt to match Manivong’s and a really nasty streak on the ground mixing up a brutal ground and pound along with sub attempts. Manivong has shown he doesn’t mind working the ground game for subs, but if Spong controls the action on the ground with his better wrestling and gets into the top position this thing gets ugly fast for your boy Hare! HR: Wow, well, that’s a bit of a deflater for team Rumpler right there Donkey! Thanks for that…not. But I can’t argue with you. This may be one that Manivong would be better suited to try to keep on the feet and win with striking perhaps! So give us your pick Donkster! Donkey’s Pick: Spong via TKO (Strikes) Spong has thrown down some vicious shots on the ground lately leaving his last two victims in a pile of blood after doctor stoppages. He has a serious nasty streak and when you’re talking heavyweights, that’s a lot of aggression and just plain meanness! I think he probably gets the top at some point here and then it gets ugly… *********************** Undercard Bout #4: Light Heavyweights Choctaw Bloode (11-9-0) v Aleks Kuznetsov (10-7-0) HR: Wow Donkey! Two fighters here as get towards the end of the Undercard who have very similar records and also very similar skill sets, at least on paper in primaries! DD: Yep, and both are fully prepared! So it should be a great fight between Kuznetsov and Bloode tonight! Perhaps one of the better ones on the night and certainly for the Undercard. HR: Alright, give us some insight into both here? DD: Kuznetsov and Bloode both have had their issues with submission specialists in the past. Kuznetsov more so than Bloode, as at least Bloode was able to avenge a submission loss to Akerfeldt by coming back with a TKO under new management a couple months later. That said, even if this fight stays on the feet tonight, which it likely will, we should see some difference in styles as Kuznetsov has a pretty lengthy history of taking the fights deep while Bloode has more a tendency to go for the finish. And get finished at times as well. HR: Bloode definitely needs the win here more than Kuznetsov does and should be hungry for it. He lost four in a row prior to his win last month and that’s not a great look considering that came after a three fight losing streak that ended with two wins under current management. Another loss here would likely leave him only one more away from…well…you get it. So give us your pick Donkey! Donkey’s Pick: Bloode via TKO (Strikes) Kuznetsov can be finished and has been. Bloode will be out for just that tonight. I expect him to try to push the pace and either gas out Kuznetsov for the late TKO or just flat out bring bombs to try to end it. That could backfire and turn into a gas out situation in reverse in Kuznetsov’s favor, but I’m going with a gut pick here. *********************** Undercard Bout #5: Welterweights Justin Kulina (9-4-0) v Samuel Sanchez (11-8-0) HR: Really thrilled here Donkey! Yet another pairing for this evening that is amped up and ready to get in there! Both Sanchez and Kulina are representing the Welterweights well as they come into the cage fully prepared to do battle! DD: And with both having solid record…Kulina with the slightly better one and hence the reason he’s got the red corner…we can expect a really solid outing tonight from both of these kids. Sanchez has the edge on the ground in this one, with a very, very small edge in wrestling but a brown belt over Kulina’s purple. Kulina will be the one with the striking advantage on the feet as he has elite boxing but even a more impressive advantage in Muay Thai. Should he choose to take it into the clinch tonight. HR: So given all that are we looking at a potential striker versus submission battle here? DD: Probably not the submission part there Hare. Sure, Sanchez does have the Jiu Jitsu advantage, but more often than not his finishes come from a nasty ground and pound game. I think the Jiu Jitsu is more there as supplemental, a distraction if you will, and potentially for defense as well. HR: But we should definitely see Kulina trying to win this one on the feet with striking I’d think. And if he wants to keep it off the ground, doing it with boxing rather than the clinch might be the way to go. So, have a pick for us Donkey? Donkey’s Pick: Kulina via Unanimous Decision Sanchez has fallen victim to the judges’ scorecards quite a bit of late with an inability to finish the fight. One of those losses was against Kulina’s teammate, Segura as well, so Kelly McGrady is certainly familiar with Sanchez’s tactics. I think that might give an edge here. *********************** Ok folks, Donkey and I are working hard to get the rest of the preview out here and will be back soon within the hour with the remainder! *********************** Main Card Bout #1: Light Heavyweights Ibrahim Camara (38-19-1) v Ryan Bolt (4-0-0) HR: Main Card time here Donkey! And with it we get some truly unrestricted, unrestrained action with Bolt and Camara! Bolt, despite being a 346k ID fighter, has only four professional fights under his belt. But he’s made the most of those with an undefeated record to date. On the polar opposite side of the spectrum, Camara has a startling number of fights compared to Bolt with close to sixty fights leading into tonight! DD: Camara will have the experience advantage here tonight. But Bolt will have the skill advantage, on paper, as he carries a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and he’s also considerably younger at 28 years old while Camara is 36. Camara is on the right track now under his new management team, but under prior management had been struggling while at Syn with a 1-3 run over four fights. His win over Tank Tribute with us here at Sucker Punch last month in addition to the management change I just mentioned may have breathed new life into him and we’ll definitely see that theory tested this evening! HR: From what our scouts have told us, Camara is mostly a striker, a boxer. Bolt, despite having a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, prefers to stay standing and doesn’t mind either boxing or the clinch. Perhaps he focuses on the clinch tonight to put Camara where he’s not as comfortable…or do we see a surprise move to the ground game? DD: It’s very difficult to judge where Bolt and his came might take things tonight because of his four professional fights, one was in KT. So we have to discount that. Two of his prior MMA fights were QFC battles, so there’s only so much you can take from those also. The only solid information we have to go by is his fight last month here at Sucker Punch against Doppo Orochi. Which he won by focusing on the striking game and going for the TKO. Given that, we have to assume we’re likely looking at a standup battle tonight. HR: So a pick there Donkey? Donkey’s Pick: Camara via Majority Decision Camara knows how to win, he’s a former champ from his SMASH/ALPHA-1 days. That was under different management, but Antonio Maximus’ team is competent as well. I’m still waiting to see more from Bolt and how he handles this challenge as he builds up more credible fights on his resume. This is going to be a fun one to watch and analyze after! For now, I’m going with the more known fighter. *********************** Main Card Bout #2: Light Heavyweights Thai vs. Ecker II Wille Thai (9-7-0) v Devin Ecker (9-7-0) HR: Well Donkey, we may only be two fights into the Main Card here but there is a lot on the line for the participants in this matchup! The winner of Thai vs. Ecker two, in addition to being able to claim to be the victor in their rematch, will also earn a title shot against Izanagi to re-establish the Light Heavyweight Title here at Sucker Punch! Nice! DD: Well, no pressure there then right for these two? Haha. Both are fully prepared, as you’d expect them to be for such a big opportunity, so the best both can bring is what the fans should get this evening at the Wombley. Thai is historically a ground specialist who loves submissions. Ecker will have the advantage in all other areas including a slight edge in wrestling. He’ll use that to try to fend off Thai, but even more than that, he’ll want to use that wrestling to establish dominant position on the ground before he unloads a crushing GnP attack. As he’s done to more than a few opponents! HR: The first time these two met, back in August last year, Ecker won via KO late in the third round. Do you see that scenario repeating itself Donkey? DD: It sounds like it’s time for a pick I guess…so let’s do that and discuss… Donkey’s Pick: Ecker via TKO (Strikes) If Thai’s defensive grappling and transitions haven’t been beefed up in the past half year it could very well happen. But at the same time a submission artist is a nasty, dirty, dangerous opponent even when they’re on the bottom. Things can go sideways…or get snapped…quickly out of nowhere in those situations. So where and how this goes will really depend upon what each has focused on over the past half year, and a little bit of strategy and luck as well. This is a really, really difficult pick. I like Ecker’s chance to repeat in this one…but he did get caught by Akerfeldt in a guillotine back in October…so again, this could slip to Thai just as easily. Did I hedge my pick well enough there? Ha. *********************** Main Card Bout #3: Lightweights Maximus Furioto (17-8-0) v Kurt Cobain (13-8-0) HR: Alright Donkey, halfway through the Main Card here and our last bout before the Main Events! And this should be a fun one!!! Definitely striker versus ground specialist situation! DD: Exactly Hare, and Cobain really, really needs a big performance in this one tonight for a few reasons. First, he’s lost two in a row…granted, against some of the elite in the division but he himself has been a perennial contender and to get back into contention needs to prove he can beat those guys. But, more importantly perhaps, he’s struggled a little against ground guys and needs to also show that he can defeat them just as well as he can handle other strikers. We know he can hit, and hit hard, but can he do it all? You need to at this level now. HR: And we can’t overlook the need that Furioto has for a win here as well Donkey.
