Thank you for tuning into my show. I have the Canadian high schooler that moved here to train and compete in mma, James Howlett. Welcome James. James Howlett: Thanks Shane. You some type of sports reporter or something? Shane Victorino: Are you serious? Do you not know who I am? James Howlett: No clue. Shane Victorino: I'm a Hawaiian native that was a multi-time all star baseball player who won 2 world series with different teams. I'm like one of the biggest names to come out of Hawaii. James Howlett: Yeah sorry bub never heard of ya. Baseball really isn't that big in Canada. Shane Victorino: Ah whatever it's fine. Anyways you are bjj specialist who had won the Canadian bjj open belt grappling tournament and the Canadian bjj brown belt invitational and that was at 16 before being recruited by Old School Training to come to Hawaii and train there, fast forward 2 years you're 18 years old and 1-0 in mma and have another fight coming up is that correct? James Howlett: Yes it is correct. I also recently got my black belt in bjj have been thinking about competing in a grappling tournament in Brazil at the big ADCC. Old School Training I help teach a grappling class there for free training and I stay in the dorms at school. They have pretty good coaches that I've sharpened my own bjj a bit but I've also gotten a lot better with wrestling aspect to help with getting utilize my bjj and have been getting better with the stand up. Shane Victorino: Nice. So your upcoming opponent is 21 year old Francis OMalley. What do you about him? James Howlett: Well this will be his debut fight so I don't really know much about him. Just what I have heard and that is he is a very talented wrestler who has been working aimlessly on his striking since deciding to go into mma. Shane Victorino: So how do you see the fight going with OMalley? James Howlett: Well his wrestling is really good and since he has been working only on his striking means this can be a very dangerous fight for me. Yes I have been working on my standup game, but I'm a grappler. That's my game and will always be my game. So I think it depends on rather I can get the fight to the ground or not. He is going to want to keep the fight standing and it's stupid enough to take the fight to the ground. But if the fight goes to the ground at all in this fight then I win. It's really that simple. Shane Victorino: Is there anyone you want to fight after your opponent? James Howlett: I'll fight anyone. Whoever they put in front of me then I'll fight them. But I want Everett Covington. I don't see me getting that fight anytime soon especially since he has a fight for the belt against Datte Bayo and I guarantee he walks out of there the winner and submits Bayo. And I don't see anyway really they give a guy ranked as low as me a shot at the belt just because I want to fight him. Shane Victorino: Why do you want to fight Covington so bad? James Howlett: It's nothing personal or I think he is bad or anything but I want to fight him because I respect him. We are both bjj blackbelts. He's undefeated. He has better wrestling than I have. I think it would be great grappling match and a good test of my abilities especially before I go compete trying to take gold in Abu Dhabi and being a bjj world champion. While he is a better wrestler and even though he has been a black belt longer than I have I still think I have better bjj than he does. Shane Victorino: So what do you think happens if you win and what do you think happens if you lose? James Howlett: Well if I get beat by OMalley I'll wait for a call for my next opponent and if I win I would hope to get someone in the top 10 in the division. Hi again Hank. Hank McCoy: Hi again Mr. Victorino sir. Thanks for having me on your show again. Shane Victorino: So what do you think about Reyes calling you out and having a dig at your fight name? Hank McCoy: Honestly I didn't know anything about it until after I signed. I signed the contract for the fight and emailed the copy back to the brass at Bellicose. Got an email back if I heard the call out and said no, but who am I fighting anyways. They replied it was on the contract. I told them I never look at who I just sign it. That why I sent the call out to the entire division rather they are in Bellicose or not. My opponent doesn't matter to me. Never has. Shane Victorino: What does matter to you? Hank McCoy: Well I would have preferred the fight to happen sooner and it's a 5 round fight. If I'm not in a title fight I don't want a 5 round fight. Shane Victorino: Speaking of title fights. Are you looking for a title fight after your next fight? Hank McCoy: Look we all know 2 things 1 I don't disrespect my opponents and 2 every fighter wants to fight for the belt so of course I do. Shane Victorino: Again you haven't said anything about your opponent. What do you got to say in response to Reyes? Hank McCoy: Well Reyes is a skilled striker going 5-1 with 5 KOs but with our last name being McCoy, Hank McCoy was my father's favorite X-Men as a child so he named me Hank after and in honor of that I chose to fight underneath his moniker Beast. So you might be talented and skilled but unlike you I have dominated every single one of my opponents. Sorry to my past opponents but it's true. And that was even personal. You just made it a bit personal. I get better everytime I get in the cage and this time you are not only going to be getting in there with the best Hank McCoy there has been yet but also going to be getting in there with a Hank McCoy that is going to get real personal inside that cage for the first time. I can't say I will be the first to beat him because he has already been beaten but I will be the first to finish him. I've yet to say I'm going to beat my opponent, but come that night you best be getting in the cage showing up looking for a paycheck because you going to get wrecked. Shane Victorino: We heard after your 10th professional fight you plan to leave Bellicose is that true? Hank McCoy: Yes that is true. And Bellicose knows that. But they have me for quite a while. This will be my 5th professional fight and after high school I'm going to college so my parents still only will allow me to fight once every 4 months(30 days irl). So that means they still have me for about 2 years. I just think by then it will be time for me to go test myself against the best in the world.
