SUCKER PUNCH PREVIEW

Sucker Punch Pro Series 95

Welcome back Sucker Punch fans!  We’re getting set down here in Sydney for SPPS 95 tonight and I, Hare Rumpler, will be with you all evening along with our analyst, the most loved (or hated, depending upon who you are!) ass around, Donkey “Dan”!  We’re back over at the Sydney Superdome tonight as we get ready to hopefully pack it with close to 30,000 screaming Sucker Punch faithful…so long as I didn’t screw up the ticket giveaways again tonight! LOL!

We’re literally only four events away now from our biggest event ever at SPPS 98 when we’ll be in one of the super arenas for the very first time, The Tokyo Bowl, which holds over 93k people!  The run-up to that event is going to be wild as the excitement continues to build and SPPS 95 tonight will certainly be NO exception as we have a night full of fantastic action set for you!

Also, as many of you already know, we’ve continued to move forward with our plans to approach unrestricted status here at Sucker Punch Pro Series!  We’ve been hinting at it for a while now, which is why we’ve moved to PPV events and larger venues, and we’ve recently reached out to all of our current fighters and managers to ensure that we’re on the right path and that everybody is on board and ‘in the know’.  The feedback and response has been amazingly positive and there is no doubt in my mind that our crew at Sucker Punch is confident that we here in the front office will always make every effort to do right by the folks that made us who we are. And lest there be any confusion, that’s our managers and fighters!  We owe you everything, and we’ll continue to try to make this the most fun org to be part of!

So why don’t we jump into this thing?  Something for everybody is what we’ve got on tap tonight…Featherweights, plenty of Welterweight action including the title on the line between defending Champ Darry Curtis and challenger, Red Crow, even some big boy action between Tyson and Wrecks in the Co-Main Event.  And just about everything in between, minus I think the Lightweights who won’t be in action this evening!

So, let’s grab a quick word about our merchandise partner and sponsor and get into each upcoming fight tonight in a bit more detail!

Our fantastic and respected sponsor is Shadow Warrior Nutrition!   Many of you already know them as the providers of Shadow Warrior Tea 160Q., THE energy loss reduction supplements!  For those of you who aren’t in the know on that, you should be, because this is the way you keep your fighter training more often and not taking sessions off to try to keep his energy above 90%!  If you aren’t using this supplement, hurry over and check them out today, you will not be disappointed!

Now, let's get to it!

Undercard Bout #1: Middleweights

Humphrey Wellington (9-14-0) v Tyson Law (9-6-0)

We’ll get things going tonight with a bit of a “warm-up” match for the cage!  Both Law and Wellington have been struggling a bit of late and could use a win to break things up.  Especially for Wellington who comes into the cage this evening on a three fight losing streak and a 5-1 record recently.  Tonight’s the night for Wellington though as Law is gifting him a big opportunity by coming into the cage unprepared, his morale at about 30%, and his manager absent for the past five days!  Clearly Law has not taken advantage of the information I sent out recently about morale and energy, as his clothes remain unchanged from the magic-whities he was born with.

Wellington is the more skilled fighter on the feet in this bout and loves to use kicks, both to the body, legs and head, but that may not be a prudent strategy tonight…at least not at the typical ratio he tends to use.  Those higher kicks to the body and head could lead to being taken to the ground.

And the ground is where Law will want this fight. He’s much more skilled there than Wellington with exceptional wrestling and a black belt in Jiu Jitsu.  And that black belt isn’t for show as he has a history of pulling off submissions.

Donkey’s Pick: Wellington via TKO (Strikes)

Under new management (who clearly isn’t that interested in being around this past week leading up to the fight), Law would have been a great test for Wellington and was brought in on a one-fight deal specifically to give Wellington some action.  We’ll see if he can overcome the lack of preparation to still make this a contest or if Wellington’s feet will find the mark early!  You know I typically won’t pick for the unprepared fighter though.

Undercard Bout #2: Middleweights

Rogerio Duarte (12-11-0) v Jim Beam (6-12-0)

We go right back to our Middleweights in our second of four Middleweight fights this evening.  Despite seemingly very different records these two are about as closely matched, on paper, as you can get.  Beam may have the smallest of edges in boxing but that’s offset by just a smidge in Muay Thai and wrestling for Duarte.  Nothing significant in any of those areas though.

Both of these fighters are having a rough go of it lately though.  Despite Duarte’s close to .500 record, he’s lost four in a row and has fallen from what used to be a much more positive 12-7 record.  That run began with a title fight loss to Jacob Parker after he came into Sucker Punch with two wins in a row and then tacked on two more here against Veidt and Akerfeldt.  He has seen some of the tougher competition in the division and tonight will be his chance to step it back just a bit against another struggling fighter as he tries to right the ship.  When he’s won, he’s won via TKO and KO.  It should be noted that while he tends to stand and box in most of his fights, he had some really good results against Veidt by using the clinch heavily.  Will he return to that approach this evening?

Beam started out with Sucker Punch on a rough 0-3 run, then found his way a bit as he ran off a 5-1 streak after that which was culminated by a win of the Middleweight title over young Nyah Hirst.  However, he failed to defend the following month against Landon McGuire and that’s when things really went sideways for him as he was never really able to recover and gain his confidence back.  He lost six in a row before finally finding a way back into the win column against Zhao in July.  What looked like an opportunity to turn the page instead went back into the thing of nightmares as he lost his next two leading into tonight’s fight.  This is a man struggling to re-find himself and given Duarte’s struggles that opportunity has to be grabbed tonight.  He’ll typically kickbox as long as he needs to before attempting to take it straight to the ground or get into the clinch with the same eventual goal.  Once on the ground, he likes to work the GnP while staying alert for submission opportunities.

Donkey’s Pick: Duarte via Unanimous Decision

A tough one to call tonight as both have been stumbling and bumbling along.  I’m tossing the quarter a bit here and going with the red corner and the better overall record. Not exactly a very scientific way of going about this!

Undercard Bout #3: Welterweights

Maximus Jr vs. Mandinos II

Marcus Megnus Maximus Jr Maximus Jr (10-8-0) v Kahdi Mandinos (9-11-0)

Alright Donkey, you’ll be happy to know that as we move on over to the Welterweights here we have two kids who are pretty much ramped up and ready to get at it this evening!

Mandinos comes in with exceptional wrestling and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu but has been unable to overcome the majority of strikers he’s faced this year.  He was on a six fight losing streak that was broken in September by a win over Ryo Hamada before being dropped in the first round last month by Hadr Bari.  One apparent issue appears to be his inability to efficiently get the fight to the ground where he clearly needs it to be.  By the time it’s there, he’s expended a decent amount of energy and his brown belt, which may be lagging behind where it should be by this point given his relative skills in standup, doesn’t seem to be quite strong enough to put the fights away consistently.

Maximus was able to finish it against Mandinos the first time they met back in July.  It took till the third round to finally end it via TKO, but the deed was done. He’s 3-1 over his last four fights and has shown a willingness to do whatever it takes, striking or submission!  Tonight, you would expect him to want to repeat what worked last time around by keeping the fight standing, mixing in an occasional kick or two, but mostly just exploiting Mandinos’ lack of standup.  All while trying to avoid having this thing end up on the ground where the playing field is considerably more even.

Donkey’s Pick: Mandinos via Submission (Guillotine)

Not sure why I’m making this pick other than that it just feels like Mandinos is due!  Maximus certainly has the advantage in head space given his prior win over Mandinos as they prepare for their second meeting tonight, but Mandinos is in a “nothing to lose” scenario as well!

Undercard Bout #4: Middleweights

Paulo Blikstein (10-6-1) v Derek Patterson (3-3-0)

Back to the Middleweights here for our third of four tonight with what I very much think could be one of the best fights of the evening!  Patterson is 1-2 since joining Sucker Punch in a run that has been uncharacteristic of P J Jones’ fighters here at SPPS. Blikstein is coming off a win but also is 1-2 over the same period.  Both fighters have been up against quality competition and this one tonight will tell us which of the two is closer to being a part of the top tier at Middleweight and which is just a step behind!

Jones’ camp is usually very focused on ensuring their guys can strike at a technical level with the best out there.  And are able to go the distance if need be to win it with the judges.  Patterson has struggled to fit that bill to date and when he switched it up and took things to the ground he was unable do as much there as he thought he might against a struggling Beam.  Although he still got the win in that one.

Blikstein came out with a nasty ground and pound game last month against Rogerio Duarte that earned him a KO on the mat!  Given his elite wrestling and brown belt in Jiu Jitsu…and Patterson’s relative struggles to get much done on the ground in his recent fights…I wouldn’t be surprised to see him trying to move this fight there in a repeat performance!

Donkey’s Pick: Blikstein via TKO (Strikes)

I’m thinking along the same lines as Hare here. Blikstein was focused on what he wanted to accomplish last month and it doesn’t seem like he’d need to adjust much for this go-round.  It’s going to be on Patterson to make the necessary adjustments to succeed tonight and to me that puts the advantage in Blikstein’s corner.

***********************

Undercard Bout #5: Light Heavyweights

Iliya Topuria (8-0-0) v Drax Bautista (8-6-0)

As we finish up the Undercard here we’ve got another pair of fighters who are VERY evenly matched.  Both are just a tad off on energy so far but that is likely to change as they continue to rest up for the rest of the evening leading into tonight’s battle!

Bautista makes his Sucker Punch debut this evening after previously spending a four fight contract over at BBFC and Checkmate before that (broken up by a single BBFC fight under former manager Money Mayweather).  He comes in off back to back wins with the most recent back in May, a victory over former Sucker Punch resident, Boris Balkan!  Bautista dominated the standup game in both of his prior fights both in and out of the clinch, with his striking outside the clinch including a varied kickboxing attack.

Topuria brings an undefeated, spotless record to the cage this evening along with a string of four wins under current manager P J Jones, the most recent three taking place here at Sucker Punch!  This man can stand and strike with precision, as is a staple of team Jones, or he can win on the ground with submissions.  He’s pulled off four of those so far in his career, including against reasonably decent ground fighter in Beam.  If this fight goes to the ground tonight, it’ll be intriguing to see if Bautista can defend!

Donkey’s Pick: Topuria via Submission (Armbar)

I really want to see what Bautista has on the ground going forward and I have a feeling that he’ll be tested tonight.  Can’t go against Topuria’s record here, but a win for Bautista would be huge and boost him up the rankings fast while announcing his arrival at Sucker Punch with authority!

***********************

Main Card Bout #1: Featherweights

Herve Cabrera (10-5-1) v Michael Aalto (11-4-0)

We’ve had some closely matched fights tonight, skill wise, but as we get into the Main Card here we have yet another one that is arguably the closest so far!   Only the sliver of an edge in boxing for Cabrera and Muay Thai for Aalto separate these two.  And that sliver is all but inconsequential really.  On paper.  These two are also just about as evenly matched record-wise as possible as well! So we’re in for a good one here as we move into the final five fights of the evening.

Aalto is a former champ in the Featherweight division here at Sucker Punch.  Nay, a TWO TIME former champ. His first run was an outstanding one that saw him take the belt in a contest with Kurt Cobain around this time last year. He went on to successfully defend it FOUR times before eventually handing it over to Baptiste.  After a win over Bremner to earn his way back to the title fight he was able to avenge the loss to Baptiste by swiping the belt back but was unable to defend this time with a loss the following month to Chulalongkorn.  Since then the title picture has seen a lot of churn and Aalto seems to have lost his mental focus as he’s fallen to Joseph and Thompson, making it a trio of losses he’d like to forget about.  A win tonight could help him do that.

Cabrera was on the right track as he came into Sucker Punch with a three fight winning streak from WPFA and proceeded to tack two more wins on here at SPPS.  He lost to eventual champ Baptiste via decision but bounced back with a solid submission victory over Destin Craven to earn a title fight with Baptiste in their second meeting.  A loss there seems to have put him into a similar tailspin as Aalto with the difference being that Cabrera found his way back into the win column last month in a back to back fight against Dismantle.  The two had fought to a very tough split decision in September and ran it back in October to decide the contest.  Cabrera will hope that that win will be what he needs to start working his way to the top again and what better way than against the former champ?

Both of these fighters are accomplished on the ground.  There’s a very good chance it gets there and if it does we’re going to see a chess match for position and opportunities to finish!  Submission of the Night here folks?!?

Donkey’s Pick: Aalto via Submission (Kimura)

I have no good reason for this pick other than to give some respect to a former two-time champ here at SPPS!  Outside that, this is a great fight we have coming up to kick off the main portion of the card this evening and it’s a ‘MUST SEE’ fight!  Don’t be waiting in line for beer on this one folks!

***********************

Main Card Bout #2: Featherweights

Godefroy Courtial (14-3-1) v Mickey Dismantle (11-5-1)

Back to back Featherweight battles here on the Main Card and the fights just keep getting more and more hype baby!!!  These two are both fully prepped and ready to rock in the cage tonight and much likes some of the other fights tonight they’re very evenly matched both in skill and record!

Despite his long run at Sucker Punch this is the first time Dismantle meets Courtial in the cage.  I could go on and on about how Dismantle is a hard hitting striker who brings it like a ton of bricks, but you’ve all heard that from me many times before.  He’s also been developing his ability to strike accurately and technically of late which adds variety to his approach and might be something that Courtial struggles to plan for.  Up till the back to back run-ins with Cabrera, Dismantle was positioned for a shot at the title again.  He’d previously earned a shot after four wins in a row but failed to come out on top against Aalto who took him via a submission. A win here tonight would all but ensure that Dismantle is no more than a couple more wins away from a deserved title shot again!

Ever since leaving PANDA, Courtial has been on a slow march up the division rankings here at Sucker Punch and has quietly turned himself into a fighter whose name nobody wants to see come in as their next opponent!  Kid Sunshine is managing Courtial brilliantly and has pulled off four wins in a row, including the most recent over former Top Contender Destin Craven.  Now, the quality of competition he’s faced till now, outside Craven, hasn’t been up to the same standards as Dismantle, but that’s the exact reason for this fight! If he can come out on top against a competitor like Dismantle, all questions get tossed aside!  If not…well, we’ll know he’s still somewhere in between, eh?  He’s a pure kickboxer who will bring it from any and every angle…Dismantle had better have his guard up and be watching out for those feet of Courtial’s that have already ended three opponent’s evenings with a thud!

Donkey’s Pick: Courtial via TKO (Head Kick)

I have it on good authority that Dismantle’s manager isn’t always fully paying attention, which may give Courtial the edge he needs here tonight.  But he’s going to have to be wary…Dismantle can end his run of wins in devastating fashion if he kicks and misses!

***********************

Main Card Bout #3:  Middleweights

Kazuma vs. Marka II

Kiryu Kazuma (10-6-0) v Luka Marka (10-6-0)

Our last fight before the Main Events and it’s the battle of 10-6 vs. 10-6 baby!!! Donkey, we’ve got a ground battle special on tap here maybe?  Nah, I kid, this is your classic ground vs. striker matchup! These two met once before back in February and the result was a TKO loss for Kazuma after Marka got him to the ground and abused him relentlessly there.  Avoiding a repeat…goals for Kazuma!  Ensuring a repeat…goals for Marka!

After Marka was let go back in July by J W Hardman, now known as the Outlaw, Scott Bandz swooped in and picked him up.  He proceeded to direct Marka to a pair of wins over quality opponents in Duarte and Blikstein before falling in a somewhat surprising loss to Obama Filth last month via decision.  Marka can strike standing but does some of his best work on the ground where he loves to rain down the pain!  A big win here over Kazuma would discard any worries about the loss to Filth and position him right back towards the top of the Middleweight division again!

Kazuma will have nothing to do with being a stepping stone for anybody not matter the prior result between these two!  Team Lundgren touts Kazuma as their pride and joy as a former Middleweight champ here at Sucker Punch, a position he successfully defended once after grabbing the belt from Machado in July.  The win over Fuhren to defend was a quality one and dismissed any questions about whether he was truly worthy. However, much to Team Lundgren’s dismay, Machado came back for revenge last month and got it with a TKO victory to swipe the belt right back.  Kazuma is a hard hitting boxer who will mix in some kicks here and there and the clinch as needed, but his bread and butter, go to move is a fist to your head!

Donkey’s Pick: Marka via TKO (Strikes)

A win over Marka would put Kazuma one win in December away from a title fight to regain his belt in January, but the focus has to be on the here and now…tonight!  To make use of his nasty boxing, Kazuma needs to stay off the ground to make it happen…or finish it before it can ever get there! Marka knows he’s in Kazuma’s head and no doubt intends to cement himself there…rent free!

Co-Main Event:

Featured Heavyweight Bout

Ashwin Tyson (11-3-0) v Will Wrecks (4-3-0)

Alright folks, our Co-Main Event is up and it’s another beauty!  Now, on paper it would look like Tyson is at the slight disadvantage being a tad off on boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and having a blue belt against Wrecks’ purple.  That said, Tyson is a man on a mission and not only took this fight, but requested it!  And with it, has requested a TC battle for an eventual Title Shot if he should win again after this!  This man has a mission and is driving towards it, but there are pit stops along the way and clearly Wrecks intends to…well, wreck his plans!  Do you see what I did there Donkey?  I know…brilliant.

Wrecks has won three in a row, including two in the QFC prior to joining us at Sucker Punch last month.  And under current management, he is now 4-1 over the last five.  His entry into SPPS was a KO over Devin Hill in the second round making it three in a row via (T)KO.  He’ll mix in leg kicks to slow his opponents and is capable in the clinch with solid head shots as well.  Despite having the higher registered MMAT ID, Wrecks is older by a year at 25 years old over the 355k ID’s Tyson.

Tyson changed management teams to join Andreas Johansson’s crew between March and April earlier this year and promptly joined Sucker Punch at that time with his first fight at SPPS taking place in May.  That fight saw him make an immediate impact, both within the division and to Conchobhar’s head, as he took ‘KO of the Night’ honors with a head kick knockout!  He’s had two more ‘KO of the Night’ awards over his most recent two fights as he comes into tonight’s contest on a two fight win streak and 5-1 here at Sucker Punch.  His first and last were both head kick KO’s, so this man has some seriously dangerous feet!

Donkey’s Pick: Tyson via TKO (Head Kick)

I think both of these fighters have a ton of potential in this division and can’t wait to see what they continue doing going forward.  But I wouldn’t bypass and miss this fight tonight for anything!  The action should be intense and there is a great chance for a finish.  No guarantee which way that finish goes though!  But hey, how can I not sorta root for a highlight reel head kick KO?  The fans would go insane and that’s something I want to see 30,000 people doing!  Now…how sweet would it be if Wrecks were to spin that around on its head though?  Talk about drama!

***********************

Main Event:

Welterweight Championship Bout

Darry Curtis (11-4-0) v Red Crow (11-4-1)

With almost identical records as well as very equal skillsets, outside Crow’s brown belt over Curtis’ purple, tonight’s Main Event for the Sucker Punch Pro Series Welterweight Championship is one that should NOT disappoint!  And surprisingly, despite Crow having spent almost his entire career here at Sucker Punch in the Welterweight division, these two have never met before in the cage.

With Esiah Xavier’s departure the fighters in his stable were likely traumatized over the potential to end up in a situation that wasn’t nearly as good.  Crow didn’t need to fear that outcome, as he ended up with one of the best managers in the game with Stef Power! While some new manager/fighter combinations it can take a fight or two as Donkey likes to point out for the synchronicity to kick in. Nope, not here again.  Power was able to pick up without missing a beat and lead Crow to a win in late September of Leroy Jinx, led by Jones, which was one heck of a win!  But that’s what you expect from a former champ like Crow who is now clearly on a mission to not just win back the belt, but to prove that this time, he can defend and hold it!  Previously he won it from Ronnie Bass in May but lost it the following month to Juan Christiano.  Tonight is the first step to changing the script on that.  But…

Curtis will not be willing to just walk into the cage, shake Crow’s hand and then place the belt in it for him.  Hell no!  And if Crow thinks he’ll be able to coerce him into it, well, he may have another thing coming there as well given Curtis and manager Joe River have dispatched the last five opponents they’ve come up against!  And given they did that against Juan Christiano to take the belt, the same man who defeated Crow originally for the belt…well, that has to make one take pause for a moment!

Curtis can box with the best of them and finish a fight…as Vovchanchyn painfully learned three fights back.  But he can also go the distance against guys who excel at doing just that, such as Christiano.  And while he can take you out with some powerful strikes while mixing things up kickboxing, he’s especially dangerous in the clinch where he can brutalize an opponent.  And has.

Crow will stand and kickbox as well, so he and Curtis have that in common tonight.  But he also loves to get the fight to the ground where he can bring the nasty from above!  If he can do that, gain and hold the dominant position on the mat, he can make this a rough night for Curtis!

Donkey’s Pick:  Curtis via Unanimous Decision

I think these two guys are much too determined and skilled to ever give in in this one tonight.  And I also think their skills defensively are on point. I expect a long one this evening, with the potential for one fighter to eventually gas out over five long rounds.  If a finish does come, I expect it in the championship rounds.  But for now, I’m going with the Champ to find a way to retain!

***********************

So there we have it Sucker Punch fans!

So excited for tonight, and ACTUALLY having close to 30,000 fans in the arena for this amazing card!  Come join us folks, get down to the Sydney Superdome or if you can’t, tune in for the action packed 3 hour PPV!  You won’t want to miss it!

Till then, have fun and don’t forget…

Keep it cheap and dirty…Sucker Punch Pro Series 355k+ style!

SUCKER PUNCH PRO SERIES NOW ENTERS A TRANSITION TO UNRESTRICTED!!!

Hey Sucker Punch family and those future members of our fun, interactive, cheap shot loving crew!!!  Big announcement here that has been several months in the making…We are now officially open for recruiting as we transition over the next 4-6 months.  Read on for more details on the information we’ve already provided our current managers and fighters for feedback as well as how we envision things going forward and the effects or lack thereof that it might have on the different level fighters in our org!

And while you're thinking about things, please remember that I truly, honestly, have always wanted the best for the managers in this org.  I hope I've left no doubt in everybody's mind over the past year and a half plus that that is the case and, above all, I hope that you guys trust me to do things in a way that respects you and won't put you in bad positions.

I very much anticipate a slow, gradual migration over the course of many, many months as we continue to grow into the unrestricted space.  So think of what I had in mind as more of a "hybrid" model.  We have a target in mind of Sucker Punch's second birthday in April before we’re fully into unrestricted mode and even then I still anticipate it’ll be a while that we operate in a “hybrid” scenario.  By “hybrid” scenario I mean where I still heavily take into consideration skill levels, age, ID, strength of recent opposition, etc. more so than hype+pop.

This is why we've been doing PPV's in an attempt to start bolstering our org hype, etc. and we've been bringing in the occasional one-off fight between a couple of open ID fighters here and there.

With all of that put out there as an intro (yeah, I know, I can talk eh?), let me lay out what I envision going forward. And how it would affect each subset of our current population and those who might come to us.  Hopefully this will all make sense and you can have confidence that I will continue to run the org in a way that benefits all of our managers and fighters.  And that I would continue to know our fighters, know where each are, and continue matchmaking in a manner that you guys have come to expect from me.

*******
Over the course of the next 4-5 months we’ll actively be opening up the org to sub-355k, unrestricted ID fighters in our divisions.  That starts NOW, so come on over if you’re interested!  However, that would come with caveats.  The first would be that nobody who is here in the 355k+ range will be required to fight sub-355k guys initially.  The option will be there for those who desire the step up in competition, or a change of faces in who they are facing, additional hype+pop influx, etc.  But certainly everybody here can be confident that I still will not be taking a 359k guy, or a 362k guy, etc. and tossing them up against a 320-340k guy or something like that without it being requested by the younger fighter.  The new incoming unrestricted ID guys would not be eligible for title contention during that transition period before April 2022 and no champ or top contender would be forced to take them on unless they requested or wanted the fight.  It will simply be a period allowing us to start our transition and slowly ease into things.  The following is how I view the effect this would have on each tier or category of fighter:

** New Incoming Unrestricted Fighters to the Org **

This is probably the piece that is going to require the most flexibility, both from me and the fighters/managers.  There is no way for me to say how quickly or slowly we'll be able to start acquiring open ID, unrestricted fighters in the org.  There are NOT a ton of free agent fighters out there at this time.  The open ID orgs that already exist know this.  Everybody does.  So it's not like we could expect 10-20 new guys in each division within a month or two.  However, I would like to believe that the way we've run this org, the way we've tried to cultivate manager and fighter involvement, and given back to them over the run we've had at 355k has made this org something to look forward to being a part of.  So I do believe that over time we'll be successful in bringing in decent numbers.  But in the short term, this may mean some gaps between fights for these guys if none of our existing 355k+ guys are ready to fight them and our options for them are limited.  Obviously I'd be scouring constantly for guys who might want to come in even for a one-fight deal to supplement and help us keep guys active as we slowly transition.  I'll be as open as possible to allowing these unrestricted guys freedom of movement to get fights where possible and to keep them as busy as we can as we build up.  While I can't give definitive info on how all of this would progress, once again I go back to hoping that the managers out there who know me would trust that I'll give this the best, most honest effort I can give it!

** Upper Tier, Top Contender Fighters **

Frankly, the best our divisions have to offer are already at or ahead in skill compared to fighters who might come in to us as unrestricted at the start.  I have spoken with quite a few of these fighters' managers and I know that many of them are already eager for a few new faces to fight.  As a new org moving into the open, unrestricted ID range it is highly unlikely that we'd have the likes of Arundel and company coming on board, guys who are the absolute cream of the crop in the food chain of MMAT!  I have zero doubt that our guys in the Top 5 of our divisions can compete with the unrestricted, sub-355k guys that might come to us, but still, they would not be required to fight them in any way in the short term.  That would be by choice over the transition period of 4-6 months.  After that, rest assured, my matchmaking honestly wouldn't change much.  I'd still be taking hard looks at relative skills, ages, ID's, recent records and trends, etc.  How you see me match up fights today is pretty much what you could continue to expect.  Hopefully I've given you that confidence over the past two years.

** Mid Tier or Lower Tier Fighters **

The first two concerns I would expect our lower tier, younger, or less experienced fighters to have would be a) being unfairly matched up against fighters outside their skill/age/experience level and b) that an influx of unrestricted fighters would make it harder for them to work up the ladder.  My thoughts on these two concerns are very clear and hopefully you'll agree with me.  For the first concern, I wouldn't do that.  How do you know?  Well, the same as I said at the end of the above paragraph.  Hopefully I've earned your trust in that.  These fighters would see very little change. They'd continue to fight the same level fighters they've been up against this entire time until they develop up and are ready for bigger challenges.  Most of you already in the org know that I speak with our managers on a fairly regular basis.  When I'm unsure where a guy stands or where his manager sees him going in short order, what he might be up for, I speak with the manager and discuss. I feel like these conversations are almost always positive and beneficial for everybody and keeps me on the right path with their fighter and keeps the manager confident that I've thought things through well for them.  All of that would continue unchanged.  For the second concern, hindering the climb up the ladder...frankly I see it this way:  If you weren't ready to take on the Top 2-4 guys in the division currently or make a run at the title, the incoming unrestricted fighters wouldn't change that.  Our top guys already in the org in each division are at least as good as these guys already.  You'd be no further away.  But eventually, when you're ready, you'd have a wider variety of options for fight matchmaking.

So there we have it folks.  That's how I envision us moving forward.  Not an all-at-once leap into the deep end, but a slow transition and migration into something different.  As I said, I have a hybrid model in mind.  And I could foresee that hybrid model existing for quite some time, even as much as 6 months to a year.  Hell, knowing the way I matchmake, it wouldn't be a surprise if really the way I do things never really changes from the way I do the matchmaking choices now.  That might be eventually what really separates us from other unrestricted orgs, as I've always valued relative skills, quality of opponents, age and ID over hype+pop as a strict way to rank guys.  I don't know that I'd ever fully abandon that approach, but certainly a year from now some level of concern for hype+pop ranking and would be expected as an unrestricted org.

I apologize for how long this was. I know I can be brutal at times but I wanted to get this clearly detailed out so that anybody who is considering coming to Sucker Punch knows exactly where I stand, what we have planned and how I intend to get there!

  • HareRumpler changed the title to Sucker Punch Pro Series (Unrestrained) Opens in Sydney

Gotta tell you boys (and gals)...I worked super late last night on a project at work, got to sleep around 2 am...so given the weather is shit here today and I was tired as hell, I didn't really care to go out tonight.  Instead, the wife headed out...and I'm sitting here with this having a blast matchmaking and piddling with other stuff for the org...

Hafta say, it's not something I'll complain about, and this damned Monkey is quite nice!

Hello Sucker Punch family!  Just a couple notes here real quick...basically, "hellos", "welcomes" and challenges for the Welterweights!

We've had quite a few new members of the Sucker Punch family come onboard over the past several days!  I'm pretty excited about that and it's been a mix of not only 355k and 360k guys who fit into our former restricted ID range, but also we've had several new incoming unrestricted, sub-355k guys come aboard!  I say hello and welcome to all of them!  For the 355k+ guys, we'll get you into the mix just as I always have with our regular crew.  But...for the unrestricted, sub-355k guys...here is where the fun begins as we're just starting out building as an unrestricted ID org...

Two of the unrestricted guys that have joined us are in the Welterweight division:

Shock Linewood (305697) and Kai Rossiter (335194)

So for our Welterweights out there...there's an open call...if you want a piece of one of these two guys, step up and put your name forth and we'll see about potentially making it happen!  But, remember, for the 355k+ guys, there is no requirement at this time for you to fight a sub-355k fighter over the next 4-5 months.  Until SPPS turns 2 years old in April I won't even offer a fight directly without first talking to managers about it.  But, you can take the fight if you want it, I won't NOT make the fights if the 355k+ guys are on board!  If nobody wants to take them on and I don't get any requests in short order, I'll simply find them appropriate competition from outside and we'll get these boys busy one way or another and keep it fun for everybody!

So there we have it folks, a bunch of new folks coming into SPPS and that's exciting.  Please welcome everybody to SPPS and let's keep it cheap and dirty ya'll, Sucker Punch style!

~ Hare

What's up guys!  Ahmad Berry-Pettus back with another interview and today we have the one and only, Aleks Kuznetsov. Aleks how is everything going back in Russia?

Is good. Much snow and crazy relatives. Uncle Boris very drunk.

Wow, that's great to hear man. So in your last bout we seen you capture a decision win over Abraham Barnes, looking back on that performance, are you satisfied with it?

Nyet, much more like a knockout. Miss too many punches. Make too many bad punches.

What can you tell us about your opponent, Mike Bard who also fought on SPPS 91?

Tough fighter, da? Many knockouts for him. Dangerous to fight. But will be fun. I punch him a lot, I think.

How do you think you will defeat Bard?

With better punching. Not so much missing punches. Nothing fancy, just lot of hitting, I think.

Your still young at 25 years old, what could a 5 round main event do for you?

Good chance for making name more famous! Going to do best and try to KO Bard early. Crazy fight if I miss too many. Might go to casino after, if win. Sign my name for fans, da.

Thank you for your time Aleks and good luck in your bout.

Thanks to you, my friend.

SUCKER PUNCH PREVIEW

Sucker Punch Pro Series 96

Hello again Sucker Punch faithful! Hare Rumpler here back with you again along with my partner and analyst, Donkey “Dan”!  We’re about to sprint through this thing…and I don’t mean the way I normally say it’ll be quick and then continue to give a bit long rundown of everything…but really run through it given I didn’t have access to the site yesterday and this has to be done in a short timeframe tonight!

That said, no titles on the line this evening down in Sydney.  But that doesn’t mean the Superdome won’t be rocking with close to 30,000 fans energizing the place as we still have a heck of a fun ride lined up for you folks this evening!

Ok, I wasn’t kidding here, so, with that short intro, let’s grab a quick word about our merchandise partner and sponsor and get into each upcoming fight tonight in a bit more detail!

1584375781SWN.jpg

Our fantastic and respected sponsor is Shadow Warrior Nutrition!   Many of you already know them as the providers of Shadow Warrior Tea 160Q., THE energy loss reduction supplements!  For those of you who aren’t in the know on that, you should be, because this is the way you keep your fighter training more often and not taking sessions off to try to keep his energy above 90%!  If you aren’t using this supplement, hurry over and check them out today, you will not be disappointed!

Now, let's get to it!

Undercard Bout #1: Welterweight Sparring Bout

Willie Diggs (0-0-0) v Taz McKane (2-0-0)

Diggs and McKane will get the crowd warmed up this evening in a little one round, three minute sparring bout as their manager, Chris Karter, endeavors to see what they’re made of!  Now, he already kinda knows with McKane as we’ve all seen that he has a “good” but not granite chin from his earlier fights.  What we don’t know is how he’d handle a loss and what it’d do to him mentally but that’s unlikely to be the outcome tonight as he’s significantly advanced over his stablemate in the red corner!

Diggs is a fresh face to the scene with a virgin record in the cage.  He’ll be outskilled in boxing, wrestling and BJJ tonight so expect him to take a loss, something that’ll not only let Karter find out what he’s hiding but also how he handles having his ass handed to him in there!

Donkey’s Pick: Nope

I don’t do predictions for sparring bouts, ie, test fights.  But if I were to give one, I’d agree with Hare as poor Diggs appears set up to take a fall!

***********************

Undercard Bout #2: Heavyweights

Andre Powell (8-8-0) v Sergei MiG (6-6-0)

Our first real bout on the night will be the first of two big boy fights on the evening!  Now, normally I’d be saying that this fight is very closely matched, with MiG having the advantage in Muay Thai and wrestling while Powell will lay claim to being the better boxer. But, Donkey is probably going to be swayed a bit tonight on his pick by the fact that MiG comes in somewhat unprepared, both in morale and energy.

This will be MiG’s first fight here at Sucker Punch and if he wants to start having success here he’s going to need to work on coming prepared.  That’s not to say that a loss is guaranteed tonight, but he certainly isn’t doing himself any favors. He comes in off a loss from IFC and having a 1-4 record over his prior five “real” fights (given his first one under current management was a QFC contest).  His win from two fights back via TKO comes after a brutal ground and pound as he was able to get the fight onto the mat almost immediately to start that contest.  He’ll likely want to do the same tonight.

Powell had it all clicking for a bit as he downed Demon Mask, Teixeira and Sefina early in 2020 in succession.  Unfortunately, he then hit a wall and has gone 1-4 since with only a win over Victor Ballsawash four fights back but even that win was followed up by a loss to Teixeira in their second meeting.  When he wins, he wins via some nasty, hard-hitting both in and out of the clinch.  Tonight he’ll want this fight to stay on the feet so he can take advantage of his superior boxing.

Donkey’s Pick: Powell via TKO (Strikes)

Easy call for me, as Hare knows well that I won’t pick for the unprepared fighter.  At least, not very often, and tonight isn’t one of those rare situations.  MiG could get this to the ground, and if so, then things could turn on their head for Powell, but I’m going to bet against hit.

***********************

Undercard Bout #3: Light Heavyweights

Tarmo Rajantaka (8-9-0) v Roger Daly (3-3-1)

Both of our Light Heavyweights here are coming in a bit off on morale tonight, so that certainly won’t please Donkey…or me for that matter!  Daly is only about half as off as Rajantaka, so there is that.  However, both managers have been less than “present” of late, with Sam Fairtex not being around for the past week leading up to Daly’s fight and Macho Camacho the same for Rajantaka. Yep boys, a couple kids led by managers who really seem to care, as good ole Rodney would say…about what, I have NO idea!

So that said, I’m really not going to invest a lot of time here on this fight.  Daly has lost a couple in a row, surprisingly via TKO for a guy who was a former KT guy.  Rajantaka is 1-0 under current management but the lack of attention is likely to turn things back to the prior 0-4 streak he’d been on sooner or later.  Perhaps not tonight, but eventually.  Both are strikers, with Rajantaka preferring the clinch now and then.

Donkey’s Pick: Daly via TKO (Strikes)

I’ll simply go with the lesser of the two unprepared’s here.  Good luck boys.

***********************

Undercard Bout #4: Featherweights

Luke Skywalker (9-8-2) v Yellow Belt Casey (8-9-0)

Casey and Skywalker head into the cage tonight as our first Featherweight pairing and are really nicely matched.  Casey has the Jiu Jitsu advantage by about the same as Skywalker’s wrestling lead.  That should make for some interesting stuff given both have shown a proclivity to take it to the ground in the past!

Casey has bounced around between wins and losses recently, going W, L, W, L from four fights back to most recent.  So yes, he does come in off a loss but it was to a very talented Greg Connor via decision.  Surprisingly, as long as these two have been in Sucker Punch this will be their first meeting!  Casey will definitely work for submissions if he can get the fight to the ground but he’s also been known to win via his striking, specifically boxing.

Skywalker hasn’t been able to find consistency lately either with two losses in a row that were preceded by a draw with Ehrmantraut.  He has accurate striking but just doesn’t seem to work it to decisions as well as some of his opponents.  He also has no issue trying to work the ground game, but hasn’t been able to come up with a finish since last year this time.

Donkey’s Pick: Casey via Submission (Armbar)

I’m really just taking a shot in the dark here.  Both fighters could easily pull off a win here tonight if their games click and they get on a roll.  And both desperately need to find that switch!

***********************

Undercard Bout #5: Featherweight Bout

Dankula vs. Plugger II

Count Dankula (7-3-0) v Pull Plugger (10-8-0)

We’ll finish up our Undercard here along with finishing up our Featherweight battles for the evening with this second contest between the small-fries!

Plugger will have the advantage on the ground tonight with his black belt over Dankula’s purple.  But to take advantage of it he’ll need to survive against Dankula’s superior boxing and Muay Thai until he can get the fight on the ground!  He’s got two wins over his past three but has been doing a lot of back and forths between wins and losses. Lately he’s taken a new approach and clearly that black belt shows us why!  He’s got two submissions over his last three fights with the most recent, a Triangle Choke against Danny Rand, earning him ‘Sub of the Night’ honors!

Dankula was a former champion who established the belt here at Sucker Punch when he proved to be the victor in the Cockshot Sorter Series back in SPPS’s early days. He successfully defended that belt against Warran Peace after he’d won it from Andy Veidt.  Then unfortunately, his manager Bob Loblaw went MIA and he was left to wander around on his own for a bit until Brocc Ogan took him in.  The lost training time over the course of several months seemed to have caught up with him and he’s only been able to put together a 2-3 record since rejoining Sucker Punch.  Tonight will be a rematch against Plugger with the prior fight ending via a decision victory for Dankula, his first fight under Ogan.  Is he prepared to repeat or has Plugger come with some new toys in his bag?

Donkey’s Pick: Plugger via Submission (Armbar)

I have a feeling that Plugger knows what did and didn’t work back then and comes to the cage with a whole new skillset, one he’s been showing off of late.  Dankula fell via submission to Nagashima three fights back so we’ll see if he’s worked on his skills in that area since!

***********************

Main Card Bout #1: Light Heavyweights

Aleks Kuznetsov (8-6-0) v Mike Bard (9-7-1)

The opener of our Main Card will be the closest matched fight of the evening so far as Light Heavyweights Mike Bard and Kuznetsov prepare to do battle!  Both are fully prepared and that means only good things for the fans who are eager to see this one go down! And Donkey, this is another one that surprises me given how long both of these two fighters have been with SPPS, yet it is the first time they’ve met in the cage!

Bard went on a tear for a bit earlier this year and seemed to have found his groove with wins over Dorn, Steed, Junior and then Lindgren.  However, he’s stumbled a bit since going 1-2-1 over his last four, the draw happening three fights back with Roger Daly, an outcome he “righted” by defeating Daly via TKO just last month.  That performance also earned him ‘KO of the Night’ honors!  That fight was a change of pace for Bard given in the first meeting he spent a lot of time trying to get the fight to the ground to use his ground and pound skills.  However, in their second meeting last month he changed it up and stayed standing, taking it to Daly and it paid off!

Kuznetsov is a former Light Heavyweight champ here at Sucker Punch under former manager Kniges.  However, that stay with the belt was short-lived as he failed to defend it the following month, losing the belt to Jacob Parker.  Since then he’s had streaks of winning along with streaks where he…didn’t. Now under new management for the two fights leading into tonight, Johnny Tirado has led him to a .500 record, losing the first fight with Rajantaka as the two adjusted to life with one another and then coming out strong for a win over Abraham Barnes last month.  He was uber aggressive with his boxing last fight, going excessively to the head on most shots.  Will he adjust against Bard who may be looking to get the fight to the ground?

Donkey’s Pick: Bard via TKO (Strikes)

This is another very tough one to pick.  Skills are about even across the board so this really comes down to sliders and strategy!  May the best man win!

***********************

Main Card Bout #2: Lightweights

Vinicius Verreira (6-2-0) v Death Minister (13-10-0)

Our first of two Lightweight battles on the evening, with the second being the Main Event, will take us just a fight or two away from the big conclusion of the evening!  Death Minister comes in on a single-fight contract here to give Verreira some action due to scheduling conflicts although, if I’m being honest, I’m hoping to lure him onboard for longer!

Minister was most recently fighting out of HFC where he’d put together a 2-3 record over his run there after he moved up from BBFC.  His fight just prior to this a month ago was a TKO loss to Ziggy Stardust, something he’d probably like to forget about given it was the second loss to Stardust in two promotions (if you can call them separate).   He brings a boxing game that is heavy with shots to the head to the cage as that’s been his go to move over the past five fights.

Verreira is a former Top Contender in the Lightweight division here at Sucker Punch.  But that was a long time ago under former management. He had some downtime for a year in between as he changed management teams and now looks to go 2-0 with Mark Harrington at the helm after his win against Kira Yoshikage last month.  Verreira went after Yoshikage on the ground, working both the ground and pound as well as clearly focused on trying for a submission as well.  With Minister being the stronger on the feet tonight, we can probably expect more of the same from Verreira as he tries to make it two in a row!

Donkey’s Pick: Verreira via Submission (Guillotine)

Verreira was really after the submissions in his last fight and despite not getting one I think he tries the same tonight. And maybe gets a different result.  Minister will need to keep this thing on the feet to earn the points he needs to win…or finish it early!

***********************

Main Card Bout #3:  Light Heavyweights

Sora Izanagi (9-2-0) v Choctaw Bloode (10-7-0)

Alright Donkey, here we go!  Our last one before the Main Events!  And if I said that some of the earlier fights were closely matched, well, this one takes the cake bud!  These two are just about dead even in skills down the board!  And both ready to get in there with gas tanks on full and morale on high!  Nice.

Bloode, led by Ryan West, had his struggles at Sucker Punch under two prior management regimes.  He lost his first SPPS fight under G Wad and then his second under Action Jackson.  Then it seemed he’d found his happy place as part of West’s camp!  He won two in a row, solid ones over Tank Tribute and Bjorn Akerfeldt.  However, he’s slipped back again as he comes into tonight’s contest with two losses in his pocket to Topuria and Tribute, as he lost the rematch that allowed Tribute to go on for a title shot which comes up on the 26th.  He’ll need to find his accurate and effective kickboxing again that had been doing so well for him!

Izanagi makes his Sucker Punch debut tonight after previously being with CMMA.  Over his five fights with them he was 4-1 and has only lost two fights on his entire career!  His prior two fights showcased not only his ability to work the clinch but, against Dudeson, his ability to throw with power when boxing!  Given his predisposition to staying on the feet, I suspect we might see a bit of the clinch action return if he can get it there tonight against Bloode!

Donkey’s Pick: Izanagi via TKO (Strikes)

Izanagi is young…very young at 22…in this fight against the 26 year old Bloode and will certainly lack the overall experience Bloode has.  And that could be the difference maker in Bloode’s favor. However, Izanagi is also extremely talented for a kid his age and I’m thinking perhaps he finds a way if he can control the clinch!

***********************

Co-Main Event:

Featured Heavyweight Bout

Thoth Chontamenti (12-3-0) v Zygmunt Krol (6-5-0)

Our Co-Main event tonight will pit two Top Contenders against one another as they attempt to earn a shot at the title!  And not just Top Contenders mind you!

Chontamenti is the former long-time, two-time, future HoF champ who pretty much owned this division for the majority of its history!  He established the belt here at Sucker Punch after the Cockshot Sorter series and held it for an amazing SEVEN successful title defenses before losing it to Hero Shima.  He won it back against Haden but then lost it a second time to Shima in their remach, this time under new and current manager Arcalimon the Coach.  Tonight his goal is focused on Krol…and winning.  But in the back of his mind you know he has to be thinking about a potential rematch once again for what he sees as HIS HARDWARE! Especially after a loss last month via a doctor stoppage.

Krol, like Chontamenti, is another fighter formerly managed by a Yabai alliance member of mine!  After he was let go by Action Jackson Giuseppe Folioli took him under his wing and came roaring out of the gate here at Sucker Punch with two quality wins in a row!  One more here and he’s at the promised land!  Against Murphy two fights ago he appeared to be falling behind after the first round but came out and showed his power early in the second for the TKO victory.  Last time out, he went heavy with the leg kicks so clearly you cannot plan for any one attack against this man under Folioli!

Donkey’s Pick: Chontamenti via Submission (Kimura)

This should be an amazing fight and I love what Krol’s been doing with mixing it up and keeping his opponents off balance!  That said, we’ve seen time and time again that Chontamenti is just a beast and has a complete game both on and off the feet!  Only Shima has found the answer so far, and until I see another do it, I have to go with the BMF and future HoF’er!

***********************

Main Event:

Featured Lightweight Bout

Trevor Barnes (8-6-1) v Maximus Furioto (15-7-0)

Here we are, the final fight of the evening folks!  And while there is no Title Shot on the line here, or even Top Contender status per se, this is a big fight for both as a win over another highly hyped fighter in the division could do wonders as far as helping them elevate up the ladder.  In a division that has been left wide open for a little warfare as champion Frankie Logan steps away temporarily to Featherweight for a bit!

Furioto is, and always has been, a ground specialist who relies upon getting a submission finish to win it!  Unfortunately we didn’t get to see him last month as his supposed opponent showed up unable to make weight leaving Furioto out in the cold.  We got him hooked up as soon as we could again here and that brings us to this fight with Barnes!  He has had losses to Ziggy Ozbourne and Yip Man lii recently in the division, so to work up to contender status again will take a bit of effort, but this man has the skills to do it when they start clicking!

Barnes has had a tendency, much like many of his stablemates under Clifton Barnes, to come in a bit unprepared with low morale.  That happens again here tonight as he’s off by over 20%.  Now, in most fights, surprisingly and against Donkey’s predictions, he’s managed to still win.  Which is amazing, and says something about how great this kid could be with full and total preparation!  He’s never had to face true, nasty, elite ground submission guys in the past, so this is a true test for the striking Barnes this evening.

Donkey’s Pick:  Furioto via Submission (Armbar)

Combine a ground artist the likes of which Barnes hasn’t seen before along with his lack of preparation and I have to pick against him.  Again.  And probably get proven wrong by him.  Again.  We’ll see!

***********************

So there we have it Sucker Punch fans!

So there we go, a lot of action on tap for our Sucker Punch family this evening and if you can’t be one of the 30,000 lunatics helping to celebrate and enjoy this live, then be sure you jump on for the fantastic 3 Hour PPV live!  Hang in there folks, it’s gonna be a crazy one and we’ll see you soon at the Superdome!

Till then, have fun and don’t forget…

Keep it cheap and dirty…Sucker Punch Pro Series 355k+ style!
